Moving to Lutherstadt Wittenberg: costs & process

From Berlin to Wittenberg
Moving to Lutherstadt Wittenberg – between the Elbe and the Fläming
Guide
A move to Lutherstadt Wittenberg takes you to the district town on the Elbe between the Fläming and the Dübener Heide. The Town Church of St Mary, the Castle Church, the Luther House and the Melanchthon House have been UNESCO World Heritage since 1996 – and the Altstadt is correspondingly narrow and historic. We plan your home move or company relocation to suit the access, parking space and stairwell, and quote the fixed price after the survey.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 110 km via the Berlin ring road and the A9; by lorry that takes about an hour and a half. Loading, the journey and unloading therefore often fit into one day. Whether it is an old building in the Altstadt, a flat in the prefab housing estate on the northern edge of town or a house in one of the villages: we clarify the floor and access in advance. The route is described under Moving Berlin – Wittenberg.

Survey, fixed price, fixed date
We calculate your move to Lutherstadt Wittenberg by moving volume, floor, access and the roughly 110 km from Berlin – not by hourly rate. After the survey or a video appointment we quote a fixed price that is put in writing – whether your new address is in the Altstadt or in Piesteritz.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

What we handle when you move to Lutherstadt Wittenberg
Planned from Berlin, arriving in Lutherstadt Wittenberg
We have no branch in Lutherstadt Wittenberg; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is a flat in the Altstadt or a house in Piesteritz. For the parking space in front of the building, contact the town administration; whether a parking restriction (Halteverbot) or a special use permit (Sondernutzungserlaubnis) is needed, we clarify with you when scheduling. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. Places with their own pages are listed under Locations.

From
planning to assembly
A move to Lutherstadt Wittenberg is short, but not something to leave to chance: in the Altstadt with its World Heritage buildings the streets are narrow, prefab housing estates lie on the edge of town and the villages have houses with yards. This guide presents how the town is structured – the Altstadt, Piesteritz, Kleinwittenberg, Apollensdorf and the villages south of the Elbe – and explains parking, registration and costs from Berlin. Frequently asked questions about moving to Lutherstadt Wittenberg
The Altstadt, Piesteritz and the villages at a glance
The town is divided into 12 localities (Ortschaften) with their own districts. The Altstadt covers the old boroughs of Elstervorstadt, Schlossvorstadt, Friedrichstadt and Rothemark; this is where the Luther House, Melanchthon House, Town Church and Castle Church stand. Teuchel and Labetz were added in 1938, Kleinwittenberg, Piesteritz, Trajuhn and Wiesigk in 1950, and Apollensdorf in 1974.
With the expansion of the Piesteritz nitrogen works, a large prefab housing estate was built on the northern edge of town between 1971 and 1980. South of the Elbe lie the incorporated villages of Pratau and Seegrehna in the Elbe floodplain. For the move, the specific address is what counts – an old building in the Altstadt needs different planning from a house in Pratau. Our home move service adapts to this.
World Heritage, industry and the Elbe: living in Wittenberg
Wittenberg lies on the north bank of the Elbe, around 90 km (as the crow flies) south-west of Berlin and about 60 km north-north-east of Leipzig; the town belongs to the Central German Metropolitan Region. In the 16th century it was one of the most important centres of the Reformation; today tourism, trade and industry such as the Piesteritz nitrogen works shape the town. We do not quote specific rents – they depend on location and condition.

Lutherstadt Wittenberg: re-registration, citizens' office and online address registration
Anyone moving to Lutherstadt Wittenberg registers their new address at the town's citizens' office (Bürgerbüro). For this, Lutherstadt Wittenberg offers a section on its website called “Bürgerbüro und Meldewesen” (citizens' office and registration), which by its own description covers deadlines, documents, appointments, online options and fees. You book appointments at the citizens' office via the town's online appointment system. The town also refers to electronic address registration via the portal personalausweisportal.de.
The legal deadline is set out in § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG): anyone who moves into a flat must register with the registration office within two weeks of moving in. So build in a buffer right away when scheduling your move.
- Online appointments: secure your appointment at the citizens' office before moving day.
- Online address registration: check on personalausweisportal.de whether electronic registration suits you.
- Forms: the town provides forms in its citizens' services section.
It is worth looking at the town's forms page before your appointment, so that you bring all the documents you need complete and without a second attempt. After registering, you should inform your bank, employer, insurers and the broadcasting licence fee office (Rundfunkbeitrag). Your registration certificate helps with this. More detailed information on the town is in our overview Removal company Wittenberg.
Lutherstadt Wittenberg: parking restrictions, special use and access in the Altstadt
If you need a space in front of the building for the removal van, contact the town administration. Under § 45 StVO (German Road Traffic Regulations), the road traffic authorities decide where and which traffic signs are put up. In its citizens' services section, Lutherstadt Wittenberg also has a page on special use permits (Sondernutzungserlaubnis) and provides information on road closures. Ask the town directly which rules apply to your move, ideally when you are scheduling.
If the road closures page shows roadworks in your street, you should adjust the approach and the date accordingly.
- Altstadt: find out how close a large vehicle can get to the front door and whether access is restricted.
- Kleinwittenberg and other districts: check the street width and parking options in front of the building.
- Old buildings: measure the stairwell and doors and tell us whether there is a lift.
- Handover: allow time for the flat handover and returning the keys.
With these details we can calculate staff, vehicle and time realistically instead of improvising on moving day. Do tell us about special items such as a piano or safe, so that we can plan the right equipment. How we organise loading areas is on the page about the parking restriction zone; information on long routes from Berlin is under Long-distance move.
