Getting to know Venlo: Centrum Blerick, Tegelen and the Maas villages

Venlo for newcomers
Life on the Maas: an overview of Venlo's districts
Arriving in Limburg
If you are planning a move to Venlo, you are moving to a border town in the province of Limburg with around 100,000 inhabitants, spread across both banks of the Maas. The town centre lies on the east bank, Blerick opposite to the west, Tegelen and Steyl to the south, and the villages of Arcen and Velden to the north. We are based in Berlin and handle your private move from packing and transport to reassembling the furniture – at a fixed price after a survey.
Venlo lies right on the border with North Rhine-Westphalia; Germany is quickly reached via the A40/A67 and by train to Mönchengladbach and Düsseldorf. For a move across the border, household goods within the EU need no customs declaration; more important are registration with the gemeente and access on moving day. Everything about the long route from Berlin can be found under long-distance moves.

One room in Venlo? Part load!
If you are only bringing one room or a few pieces of furniture to Venlo, for example for studying at Fontys, a part load is often cheaper. Your belongings share the load space with other consignments heading to the Netherlands; in return the delivery day is somewhat more flexible.

Questions about living in and moving to Venlo
Venlo's districts: from Centrum to Arcen
The Centrum on the east bank of the Maas is the historic core with the town hall, shopping streets, the Maasboulevard and the station – short distances, but also limited space for removal vans. Blerick lies on the west side of the Maas and is connected to the centre by bridges; Tegelen in the south, known for its passion plays, is a formerly independent municipality with its own village centre, which also includes the monastery village of Steyl.
If you prefer the countryside, you will find villages on the Maas in Arcen, with its castle gardens (Kasteeltuinen), and Velden, which have belonged to the municipality of Venlo since 2010; Belfeld lies south of Tegelen. Destinations for which we have our own pages can be found under our locations – we are based in Berlin and also drive to the Netherlands.
Working and studying in Venlo
Venlo is an important logistics hub: thanks to its location on the Maas, motorways and railway lines, numerous distribution centres have settled here, along with the Freshpark Venlo, a large centre for fruit and vegetable logistics. Horticulture and cross-border trade also play a role; many employees commute between Limburg and North Rhine-Westphalia.
You can study at Fontys Hogeschool Venlo, with programmes in business and logistics among others, some in English and German; the HAS green academy is also represented in Venlo. If you combine a move to the Netherlands with a job or studies, you should take care of your BSN and health insurance early.

We are based in Berlin and drive throughout Germany and abroad, including to Venlo. Which destinations have their own page is shown in the locations overview; for long distances, read more under long-distance moves.
Zero-emission zone and access to Venlo's centre
For moves into the centre of Venlo, the zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissie-Zone) is decisive. According to the Gemeente Venlo, it applies from 1 January 2027 in the area within the Maas, Goltziusstraat, Koninginnesingel and Burgemeester van Rijnsingel. Vans of emission class 5 or lower will no longer be allowed in from 2027, those of class 6 until 1 January 2029. For lorries the gemeente names transition periods until 2028 or 2030; from 1 January 2030 all lorries must be emission-free. You apply for exemptions to the RDW (Dutch vehicle authority).
The page does not mention whether foreign number plates are affected. Check your vehicle with the Kentekencheck on opwegnaarzes.nl or ask the gemeente on 14 077.
For traffic and parking exemptions, the gemeente has the section "Verkeersontheffingen voor korte tijd" (short-term traffic exemptions) with the subpages "Ontheffing voor inrijden en parkeren" (exemption for entry and parking) and "Ontheffing voor plaatsen objecten" (exemption for placing objects), for example for setting up containers. The publicly accessible pages do not name specific rules for a removal van; clarify this with the gemeente before moving day (tel. 14 077).
The route from Berlin is described in our long-distance moving guide for Venlo. How we plan stopping in front of the building is explained on the page about the parking restriction zone.
Venlo after moving in: registration in the BRP and grofvuil
If you move from Germany to Venlo, according to rijksoverheid.nl you must register within 5 days of arrival if you are staying for more than 4 months; you then receive your citizen service number (BSN). The Gemeente Venlo requires you to appear in person with your ID, including partners, adult household members and children. You book the appointment online.
You should bring:
- all identity documents and proof of nationality
- proof of your residence in Venlo (tenancy or purchase agreement, or the "verklaring hoofdbewoner", the main occupant's declaration)
- original certificates from abroad for you and your children
According to the gemeente, registration is free of charge and applies from the day you register. False information in the BRP can be punished with a fine of up to €325. According to the gemeente, you report later changes of address within the Netherlands free of charge with DigiD, from four weeks before until no more than five days after the move.
For furniture, bulky waste (grofvuil) and mattresses, the gemeente offers collection from your home for a fee; separately sorted waste is accepted at the Milieustraat. Information is available from the Gemeente Venlo on 14 077. Everything about everyday life locally can be found in the guide Living in Venlo.
