Moving to Łódź (Lodz): Costs Process & Districts

Guide to Łódź
Moving to Łódź: Piotrkowska, Manufaktura and the Film School
at a glance
Łódź lies in the centre of Poland, around 130 km south-west of Warsaw; with around 650,000 inhabitants it is the country's fourth-largest city and the capital of the voivodeship of the same name. The textile industry made Łódź great in the 19th century; in 2006 the former Poznański textile factory became the shopping and cultural centre Manufaktura. Piotrkowska Street is the long boulevard in the centre, and the Film School produced graduates such as Roman Polański and Andrzej Wajda. Anyone planning a move to Łódź needs no customs papers within the EU.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive our lorry around 478 km via the A12 and the Polish A2 to Łódź; that is roughly 7 hours including a break. Because both countries belong to the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Łódź or from Łódź back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. Read more about the process in the guide to long-distance moves to Poland. If you are only taking a few pieces of furniture, a part load (Beiladung) is often cheaper.

Moving to Łódź: arrange a survey now
Survey first, then set the price
Call us on 01625978461 and arrange a survey for your move to Łódź. We take into account the size of your home, the floor, access, the route of around 478 km and any part-load requests, and then quote you a fixed price. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How your move to Łódź works with us
Planned in Berlin, arriving in central Poland
We have no branch in Łódź; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an older building on Piotrkowska, a flat in Widzew or a house in Polesie. We apply in good time for permission to stop outside the new address, following the City of Łódź's rules. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the handover of your flat.

What you can count on
We quote the fixed price for your move to Łódź after the survey – with packing, transport over around 478 km, parking permit and assembly listed as separate items. That way you can see in advance what you are paying for.

Planned backwards
Storage to bridge a gap
Ready to settle in
Save with a part load
For smaller volumes or single items, a part load (Beiladung) to Łódź can be cheaper: your goods share the load space with other consignments on the same route. In return you need a little flexibility on the delivery day; whether a run towards Łódź is coming up, we will tell you after your enquiry. It is also handy if a few items need to follow after the main move.

Your
move, our craft
A move to Łódź raises many questions: which district suits you, how does the lorry get to Piotrkowska Street, by when do you have to register and how do you get a PESEL number? This guide introduces the five districts of Śródmieście, Bałuty, Górna, Polesie and Widzew, explains registration, PESEL, customs and access and describes the roughly 478 km journey from Berlin via the A12 and the Polish A2. Costs, part loads and the e-TOLL road charge are covered too, as is deregistration in Germany. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Łódź
The best districts for your move to Łódź
Łódź is made up of five districts: Śródmieście, Bałuty, Górna, Polesie and Widzew, each with several neighbourhoods. The centre, Śródmieście, around Piotrkowska Street has cafés, galleries and many older buildings from the textile era; Manufaktura lies to the north-west of it. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
Widzew in the east is popular with students and young professionals, while Polesie in the west has plenty of greenery. Górna in the south and Bałuty in the north are large residential areas with many flats and terraced houses; Bałuty also has a lively market culture. For the move, access, floor and lift are what count – the older buildings in the city centre often have no lift, so we schedule enough porters.
Jobs, universities and quality of life in Łódź
Łódź has developed from the centre of the textile industry into a diverse business location; today its focus lies on the textile, entertainment and electronics sectors as well as services. The Łódź Film School (National Film, Television and Theatre School), the University of Łódź, the University of Technology and the Medical University attract many students.
The quality of life benefits from lower living costs than in Warsaw, the cultural offering around Piotrkowska Street and Manufaktura, and numerous parks. Its central location in Poland offers connections to Warsaw, Kraków and Wrocław. From Berlin-Moabit it is around 478 km via the A12 and the Polish A2. Every year the Parada Wolności takes place on Piotrkowska Street, and the Jewish Cemetery is one of the largest in Europe. If you are coming from Berlin, you should brush up your Polish for the authorities and flat hunting.

Moving to Łódź: registration, PESEL and deadlines in Poland
Anyone moving to Łódź must register in Poland. According to gov.pl, the deadline for EU and EFTA citizens is “no later than the 30th day” after moving into the flat. The responsible office is the municipal office (urząd gminy) at your place of residence. Registration itself is free of charge. A certificate of temporary residence costs 17 złoty; the fee does not apply if you register automatically online. The certificate of permanent residence is free of charge.
As documents for EU citizens, gov.pl lists a valid travel document or another valid document proving identity and nationality, the completed registration form and proof of your right to the flat, for example a tenancy agreement or a land register extract. If you are not the owner, the owner must confirm that you live there.
According to gov.pl, EU and EFTA citizens can also register online. Since 1 January 2026 the procedure for this has only run via e-Doręczenia. Anyone registering for a stay of more than 30 days automatically receives a PESEL number, according to gov.pl.
The EU portal Your Europe adds: in the first three months, EU citizens cannot be required to hold a residence document. After three months, registration may be necessary. Also read our guide to international moves and the information on long-distance moves.
Preparing for Łódź: customs, access and a quote for the move from Berlin
According to zoll.de, Poland is an EU member state. The customs exemption for household removal goods described by German customs applies to moves from third countries into the EU, with a customs application on form 0350. For a move from Berlin to Łódź, that is therefore not the yardstick. Discuss your individual case, for example with vehicles, with customs in advance.
On access: the removal van starts at our depot in Berlin-Moabit. We set the route and duration in the quote after the survey. More important than the route is access at the destination. Around Piotrkowska and in the Śródmieście city centre, you should check where the lorry is allowed to stop. Whether and how a parking space can be reserved depends on the city's responsible roads authority; ask there in good time and let us know the result.
So that we can draw up a reliable quote, we need your new address in Łódź with the floor, information on the lift, the approximate volume and notes on narrow access routes. A furniture hoist can be useful for older buildings without a lift.
Our guides to other Polish cities help with comparison, for example Moving to Warsaw.
