Nijmegen for Newcomers: From the Stadhuis Appointment to Cycling Along the Waal

Nijmegen Newcomers' Guide
Nijmegen: Hanseatic City on the Waal, Just Past Kleve
The first few weeks
Nijmegen (Nimwegen in German) lies in the province of Gelderland, only around 14.5 kilometres from its German neighbours Kranenburg and Kleve. The Hanseatic city calls itself the oldest city in the Netherlands and today is above all a university city: around 33,000 people study at Radboud Universiteit and at HAN campuses. For newcomers from Germany, the move is a change within the EU – household goods need no customs papers. More about our services can be found under home removal.
Nijmegen is known as a cycling city and was the Netherlands' “Fietsstad” (cycling city) in 2016; many people get around by bike in daily life. In the first days, the appointment at the Gemeente (municipality) counts: anyone staying at least four months registers in person in the BRP (Personal Records Database) within five days. We take care of the move: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), and your belongings are covered under the HGB. On request, we also handle furniture assembly and kitchen dismantling. Destinations with their own page can be found in our locations overview.

What We Clarify Before Moving Day in Nijmegen
Date, Parking, Access
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handle moves to the Netherlands. Within the EU there is no customs clearance for household goods; parking and access matter more. For moving day, the municipality refers to its page on parking permits (parkeervergunningen) and temporary parking spaces – clarify what applies to your street in advance on 14 024, and we will give you the vehicle length and time slot. Your belongings are covered under the HGB, and we quote the fixed price after a survey. More under long-distance move.

What
newcomers should settle early
When moving to Nijmegen, registration with the Gemeente and the BSN come first; without them, things get difficult with the bank, employer and insurance. At the same time, you look for a flat – with almost 33,000 students, the housing market is in demand, and early planning helps. For moving day, we clarify access and parking with you; you transfer your car and insurance policies yourself. This way your home removal runs in an orderly fashion from the first box to the last lamp.

Questions About Living in Nijmegen
The Nine Districts of Nijmegen at a Glance
Nijmegen is divided into nine districts. The Centrum with the Grotestraat, Markt and Valkhof lies right on the Waal and, with just under 13,000 inhabitants, is the smallest. The largest district is Nijmegen-Oost with around 35,000 inhabitants, plus Oud-West, Nieuw-West, Midden and Zuid. In the south-west lie Dukenburg, built from 1965, and Lindenholt, where the first construction work began in 1977.
Until the 1990s, the Waal was the city's northern boundary. Since then, the ninth and youngest district, Nijmegen-Noord, also known as Waalsprong, has been growing north of the river and today has around 27,000 inhabitants. Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and bike or bus connections – we plan the move according to the access and floor of your new address. The Waal Bridge, built between 1931 and 1936, connects the Centrum with the north.
Studying, Working and Living in Nijmegen
The university, founded in 1923, has been called Radboud Universiteit since 2004, and its university hospital Radboudumc is one of the city's major employers. Together with the Nijmegen campuses of HAN, almost 33,000 people study in Nijmegen, plus research institutes. In industry, alongside many small businesses, computer chip factories play a role.
Germany is close: it is around 14.5 kilometres to Kranenburg and Kleve, and railway lines and motorways connect Nijmegen with Arnhem, ’s-Hertogenbosch and Venlo. Every July, the Vierdaagse march with the Vierdaagsefeesten festival shapes the city, and in daily life the bike is often the fastest means of transport. We deliberately do not give reliable rent figures here.
Guide Prices for the Move to Nijmegen
Plan your move with clear figures: 4-room flats start from €1,269, 3-room flats from €909, 2-room flats from €615 and 1-room flats from just €349. Larger properties such as houses or villas always receive an individual quote. For longer routes, i.e. long-distance moves, we charge from €3.90 per kilometre. It is best to get advice during a free survey.
What Determines the Price for Nijmegen
The decisive factors are first of all volume and distance – we calculate the latter from €3.90/km. The floor of your flat and whether there is a lift are also factored into the calculation. Sometimes a parking restriction zone is also required. On request, we also handle furniture assembly and shared loads.

Registering in Nijmegen: Five-Day Deadline, Appointment and Citizen Service Number
According to the municipality of Nijmegen, anyone moving to Nijmegen from abroad who intends to stay for at least four months in the coming six months must register in person within five days – by appointment. The requirement is citizenship of an EU or EEA country or Switzerland, or a valid residence permit. If you stay less than four months, you are entered in the Register Niet-Ingezetenen (non-residents register).
- Documents: a valid passport or ID card for all family members; a current tenancy or purchase agreement signed by you and the landlord or seller. If you live with another person, additional proof applies (a copy of the main occupant's ID and a consent form).
- Appointment: the date of the appointment becomes your registration date; backdated or future dates are not possible. Every person, including minors, needs their own appointment and must attend in person.
- BSN: the municipality sends the citizen service number by post within four weeks of the appointment.
For four or more people, the municipality contacts you by phone or in writing to confirm; if you do not reply, the appointment is cancelled. Foreign birth or marriage certificates can be submitted later, but must meet the requirements for legalisation and translation.
Plan the move and the appointment booking together: only book the appointment once your move-in date is fixed. More on the process in the guide to moving to Nijmegen.
Municipal Offices and Moving Within Nijmegen: Stadhuis, Stadswinkel and DigiD
The municipality of Nijmegen runs two service points in the centre: the Stadhuis (town hall) at Korte Nieuwstraat 6 and the Stadswinkel at Mariënburg 30. According to the municipality, both are open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.00 to 17.00, and on Thursdays from 9.00 to 20.00. You can reach the municipality by phone on 14 024 (Mon–Fri 9.00–17.00). You book appointments via the municipality's online system.
If you later move within the Netherlands or within Nijmegen, a different route applies:
- You can report the move from four weeks before until no later than five days after the move.
- You report online with DigiD or by appointment; people aged 16 and over may report.
- If you report later, the day of reporting counts as the moving date, which according to the municipality can affect benefits such as toeslagen (allowances) or student finance.
- The change of address is processed five days after the moving date and is visible under MijnNijmegen.
For moving day itself, the municipality refers to its page on parking: there you will find parking permits and information on temporary parking spaces for large vehicles. Please clarify in advance on 14 024 whether and how a parking ban for your moving street is applied for.
