Moving to Nijmegen: Costs Process & Districts

Nijmegen guide
Nijmegen: an old city with young residents
Areas, housing, daily life
A move to Nijmegen is a long-distance move across the German-Dutch border – within the EU without a customs declaration. We take care of packing, transport and furniture assembly; in the closed-off centre fixed delivery times apply, and loading in a no-parking area requires a permit from the Gemeente (municipality). With a dedicated contact person, your private move runs from the survey to the key handover. All services can be found under Private move.
Nijmegen lies around 15 kilometres from its German neighbours Kranenburg and Kleve. The city is divided into nine districts, from older neighbourhoods such as Bottendaal to the new-build area of Waalsprong north of the Waal. We are based in Berlin and operate nationwide and abroad; our guide Long-distance move Berlin – Nijmegen describes the timetable and route. Further destinations under Long-distance moves.

What we clarify before moving day in Nijmegen
Delivery times, parking, date
In the centre of Nijmegen, deliveries are only allowed at fixed times; streets such as Broerstraat always require a permit, and on market days none is issued. We clarify these rules before moving day. Planning, packing, transport and assembly all come from a single source; your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB (€620 per m³). You register in the BRP (Personal Records Database) yourself with the Gemeente – we set the delivery day to suit. Further destinations can be found under Locations.

Frequently asked questions about living in Nijmegen
The nine districts of Nijmegen
Nijmegen is divided into nine districts: Centrum, Oost, Oud-West, Nieuw-West, Midden, Zuid, Dukenburg, Lindenholt and Noord, also known as Waalsprong. The Centrum with the Valkhof park lies directly on the Waal; older neighbourhoods such as Bottendaal are a short distance from the city centre.
Radboud University and Radboudumc are in the south near Heyendaal station, and the HAN has several sites nearby – so the area is correspondingly popular with students. Dukenburg and Lindenholt lie in the south-west of the city, while Noord with Lent and Oosterhout is the newest development area north of the Waal.
Living, studying and working in Nijmegen
The housing market in Nijmegen is in demand, as Radboud University, the HAN and Radboudumc attract many students and skilled workers. We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here; compare offers on Pararius or Funda and pay attention to the deposit and proof of income. Start your search early and be flexible about location.
Alongside the university and hospital, sectors such as the chip industry shape the economy. The city of around 190,000 inhabitants describes itself as the oldest in the Netherlands; it is known for the Vierdaagse, the four-day march held every July. Our team sets your moving date to match the handover of your new flat.

Nijmegen: permit (toestemming) for removal vans and the zero-emission zone
According to the Gemeente Nijmegen, anyone wanting to load a removal van on the pavement, in a residents' space or in a no-parking area needs a permit (toestemming). It must be applied for at least 10 working days in advance via the municipality's online form; the municipality answers questions on 14 024 (Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm). The costs apply per number plate: for one day in a space with a parking permit (parkeervergunning), the municipality states 12.60 euros, and on the pavement or in a no-parking area 12.65 euros.
In addition, the zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissiezone) affects vans and lorries. According to the municipality, after a warning phase, fines have been issued since 1 July 2026 for vehicles that do not meet the requirements. You apply for exemptions via the RDW:
- A day exemption costs 30 euros, is valid for up to 30 hours, is possible up to 12 times per municipality per year and can be applied for up to 90 days in advance.
- For removal vehicles under 13 years old, the RDW lists an exemption for 100 euros; processing can take up to eight weeks.
We check which solution suits your date before planning. More about the route can be found in the guide to a long-distance move to Nijmegen; for parking spaces in general, see the guide to the parking restriction zone.
Nijmegen: closed-off centre and registration
The centre of Nijmegen is a closed-off area. According to the municipality, anyone may enter without a permit from Monday to Saturday from 6 am to 12 noon and on Sundays from 6 am to 1 pm; at other times a permit is required. For loading and unloading, it is always required in Broerstraat, Pauwelstraat, Moenenstraat, Marikenstraat and on Plein 1944. On market days (Mondays and Saturdays), the municipality does not issue permits for Burchtstraat, Augustijnenstraat and Grote Markt. The permit only applies to loading and unloading, not to parking. Apply for it at least 10 working days in advance and upload the vehicle registration document or the rental agreement.
After moving in, you register with the municipality. According to the Gemeente Nijmegen, if you intend to live in the Netherlands for at least four months in the coming six months, you must register in person in the BRP within 5 days. This is free of charge; partners and children moving with you must come to the municipal office too.
- Do not schedule your moving date on market days in the centre
- Plan the appointment with the municipality before the move
- Have IDs and the tenancy agreement ready
