Living in Innsbruck: Housing Districts & Registration

Innsbruck for New Residents
Innsbruck: The Inn, the Nordkette and the Golden Roof
Settling in, not just moving
Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol and, with almost 133,000 inhabitants, the fifth-largest city in Austria; around 300,000 people live in the wider urban area. The city lies in the Inn valley, where the Wipptal branches off towards the Brenner. To the north the city is bordered by the Nordkette, to the south by the Patscherkofel – more than half of the city's area is uninhabited mountain land. Its landmark is the Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) in the old town. The city area even includes parts of the Nordkette and several alpine pastures. Since the Middle Ages the trade route over the Brenner has run through the city; today the Brenner motorway branches off south at the Innsbruck motorway junction.
According to Wikipedia, around 30,000 students and other people have a secondary residence in Innsbruck, and the housing market is considered tight. If you come from Germany, you do not need customs papers, but you must register within three days using the registration form (Meldezettel). We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Tyrol. The route – around 751 km, two days with a rest break for driving-time rules – is described on our page Moving Berlin – Innsbruck.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Innsbruck
Route, loading zone, hillside
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Tyrolean business. That is why we plan carefully: because of driving-time rules, we spread the around 751 km over two days. According to the city, anyone who wants to load in a no-stopping area, on the pavement or in the pedestrian zone after 10:30 needs an exemption permit; for a loading zone you must apply at least ten days in advance. We clarify hillside locations such as Hungerburg or Igls beforehand. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). We give you the price after the survey as a fixed price.

Innsbruck
for Newcomers
A move to Innsbruck raises typical questions: how do I register at the registration office on Maria-Theresien-Straße, which district suits me, and how do I find somewhere to live in a tight housing market? According to the city, city-owned flats require an Innsbruck Wohn-Ticket, which is tied to a longer period of living or working in Innsbruck. Register for childcare and school early. We handle the transport and, on request, the loading zone, furniture assembly and – if the flat is not yet free – storage.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Innsbruck
Nine Districts: Where Newcomers Live in Innsbruck
Innsbruck is divided into nine cadastral municipalities, which also form its districts: Innsbruck (city centre), Wilten, Pradl, Hötting, Mühlau, Amras, Arzl, Vill and Igls. Wilten and Pradl became part of the city in 1904, Hötting, Mühlau and Amras in 1938, and Vill and Igls in 1942. Igls and Arzl have their own district committees.
During the post-war reconstruction and for the 1964 and 1976 Olympic Games, new neighbourhoods such as the Reichenau and the Olympic Village were built; from 1939, housing estates for South Tyrolean optants were built in Pradl. You can reach the Hungerburg above the city with the Hungerburgbahn from the Congress centre. For newcomers it is worth checking tram and bus connections before accepting a flat.
Important for moving day: according to the city, loading and unloading is generally free of charge, even in short-stay parking zones. Where space is tight, apply for a temporary loading zone at least ten days in advance. You can get a resident parking card if your main residence is in a short-stay parking zone or a parking street. We plan vehicle and team to suit the address – including hillside locations.
Working, Studying and Leisure in Innsbruck
Innsbruck is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of western Austria, as well as a congress and university city. According to Wikipedia, around 34,500 people commute in every day. You can study at the Leopold-Franzens University (founded in 1669), the Medical University (independent since 2004) and the MCI Management Center Innsbruck. With 1.87 million overnight stays a year, tourism plays an important role; the city is also home to the regional court and the higher regional court.
For leisure there is the Nordkette cable car up to the Hafelekar, Zaha Hadid's Bergisel ski jump, the Golden Roof and the mountains around the city. We do not quote specific rents because we have no reliable current source; according to Wikipedia, the Innsbruck property market is considered tight. Each year the analysis “Wohnen & Wirtschaften in Innsbruck” on purchase prices is published with Hypo Tirol Bank – for rents, it is best to ask estate agents and check portals. For city-owned flats there is the city's Wohn-Ticket.

Registering in Innsbruck: Registration Form, Three-Day Deadline and Registration Office
Austria has a shorter deadline than Germany: according to the City of Innsbruck, everyone who moves into accommodation in Innsbruck must register within three days of moving in, each person individually, including children. You fill in the registration form (Meldezettel) completely, and your accommodation provider signs it. You also bring an original document showing your name, date and place of birth and nationality (for example a passport or birth certificate) and an official photo ID. Non-Austrian nationals present a valid passport or ID card in the original. According to the city, registration is free of charge.
You have three options: in person after booking an appointment online, by post or courier with originals or certified copies, or online with ID Austria (adults only). Registration by email is not possible. The registration office is at Maria-Theresien-Straße 18 (1st floor); without an appointment it is open Monday to Thursday 7:30–15:00 and Friday 7:30–12:00, and you can reach it by phone on +43 512 5360 8179.
When switching between main and secondary residence, the city states a deadline of one month. For EU, EEA and Swiss nationals staying longer than three months, the following also applies: the registration certificate must be applied for within four months of entry. Our moving guide for Innsbruck gives an overview of costs and districts, and our long-distance moving guide covers moves from Germany.
Moving in Innsbruck: Loading, Pedestrian Zone and Resident Parking Card
According to the city, loading and unloading in Innsbruck is generally free of charge, even in short-stay parking zones; only parking costs money. You need an exemption permit under § 45(2) StVO if you want to load in a no-stopping area, on the pavement or in the pedestrian zone after 10:30, or if driving bans are otherwise affected. If parking space is tight, you can apply for a temporary loading zone; for this you should contact the Department of Road Traffic and Road Law at least ten days in advance (Maria-Theresien-Straße 18, +43 512 5360 8216, [email protected]). The city grants approval if there is a significant personal or economic interest and the safety and flow of traffic are not significantly affected. The page does not state the fees; it was last updated on 29.09.2022, so confirm the details with the office. You can find more about the principle on our parking restriction zone page.
You can get a resident parking card if your main residence is in a short-stay parking zone or parking street, you are the registered keeper or lessee of the vehicle and you apply for only one card. You can apply online via the city's form, in person or by email to the Department of Parking Management. The card applies to the zone stated on it and does not guarantee a free space. According to the city, four new resident parking zones will be created in Arzl, the Olympic Village and Kranebitten from 2 November 2026.
