Moving to Innsbruck: Tyrol's capital between the Inn and the Nordkette

Tips & costs

Unsere Firma starts in Berlin-Moabit and reaches Innsbruck after around 751 km via the A9, A8 and the Inn Valley motorway – lorry driving time about 11.5 hours with a break.

A move to Innsbruck takes you to the capital of Tyrol and Austria's fifth-largest city, in the Inn Valley between the Nordkette range and the Mittelgebirge plateau. Its landmark is the Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) in the old town. The city is divided into nine cadastral municipalities – from the city centre with Saggen via Wilten and Pradl to Igls and Vill on the Mittelgebirge. Around 30,000 students and other people have a secondary residence here. For your private move we clarify access, hillside location and loading zone in advance.

From our base in Berlin-Moabit it is around 751 km to Innsbruck, driven via the A9, A8 and the Inn Valley motorway. For the lorry we allow about 11.5 hours including a break and usually plan the move over two days. As Austria is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods; on the way, the lorry pays the distance-based GO toll for vehicles over 3.5 t. We also handle the reverse route from Innsbruck to Berlin. Further information: Moving Berlin – Innsbruck.

Your move to Innsbruck: what we do

From Moabit to Innsbruck

We are a Berlin removal company from Moabit and carry out moves to Innsbruck without having a branch there. That is why we clarify access, floor and carrying routes before moving day – for a period building in Wilten just as for a house in Igls. According to the city, loading in Innsbruck is generally free of charge; for a no-stopping zone, the pavement or the pedestrian zone after 10.30 am you need an exemption permit from the Road Traffic Department (Referat Straßenverkehr). You receive a fixed price after a survey; liability is under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. More about the private move.

Packing service

We pack the kitchen, bookshelf and electronics ready for transport and mark the boxes for the new rooms in Innsbruck – the packing service saves you days.

FROM BERLIN-MOABIT

Six points for Innsbruck

For Innsbruck we calculate a fixed price after a survey: route (751 km), volume, floors and additional services are listed separately in the quote.

01

Predictable arrival

With around 11.5 hours of lorry driving, we fix the loading and arrival times in advance so that you can arrange the handover in Innsbruck with certainty.
02

Carrying routes known

A period building in Wilten or a house in Igls: we ask about the floor, lift and stairs in advance – so there are enough carriers in Innsbruck.
03

Parking at the door

We apply in good time in Innsbruck for an exemption permit for a no-stopping zone or the pedestrian zone so that the removal van has space in front of your new flat in Innsbruck.
04

Deadlines in view

We plan backwards from moving-in day: notice in Berlin, packing dates, registration appointment and the journey timed to the handover in Innsbruck.
05

Storage in Berlin

If the flat in Innsbruck is not yet free, we store your belongings temporarily in Berlin and deliver on the new date.
06

First evening in your new home

Beds and wardrobes are set up on the day of arrival, the boxes are in the right rooms – and you have time to register with the Meldezettel in Innsbruck.
PART LOAD

Part load – the clever solution

Save on small loads

With a part load to Innsbruck you use free loading space on a trip towards Tyrol. This is worthwhile for a room in a shared flat, single pieces of furniture or boxes that follow later. The delivery date is then a time window – but the price goes down.

So that you can relax

A move to Innsbruck raises many questions: which district suits you, may the removal van load in a short-stay parking zone, when do you need an exemption permit and how does the registration form (Meldezettel) work? This guide presents the nine cadastral municipalities from Amras to Wilten and sums up what the city of Innsbruck says about loading and residence registration. On top of that comes the long journey of around 751 km from Berlin. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Planning safely and calmly

For a private move, senior move or student move to Innsbruck: think of dates from moving-in day backwards, plan in registration with the Meldezettel and factor the journey of around 751 km into the schedule.

Furniture, boxes, carrying routes

Boxes, furniture, carrying routes: with a packing service and furniture transport we plan even a period building in Wilten in Innsbruck so that the lorry stands close to the entrance and large items have been measured beforehand.

Costs, timing and special cases

For the costs, what counts is the volume, floor and the around 751 km to Innsbruck. Small volumes travel as a part load; an office move is planned according to a room plan and ideally at the weekend.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving to Innsbruck

Route, districts, costs and formalities for Innsbruck.
The decisive factors are volume, floor, lift and the around 751 km between Berlin and Innsbruck. Our starting prices by number of rooms are in the overview ‘What you should budget for your move’ above; we quote the fixed price after a survey by video or on site. Packing, assembly or storage are listed in it as separate items.

Nine cadastral municipalities: Innsbruck's districts

Innsbruck is divided into nine cadastral municipalities, which also form its districts: Amras, Arzl, Hötting, Igls, Innsbruck (with the city centre, Saggen, Dreiheiligen and Mariahilf-St. Nikolaus), Mühlau, Pradl, Vill and Wilten. Hötting also includes the Höttinger Au and the Hungerburg, and Arzl the Olympic Village.

The city area extends from the floor of the Inn valley far into the mountains: the city centre, Wilten and Pradl are densely built up, while the Hungerburg, Igls and Vill lie on the slope or on the Mittelgebirge. For the move, the specific address matters – we clarify gradient, access, floor and loading zone during the survey. Our private move service adapts to this.

Universities, the Golden Roof and Bergisel

Innsbruck is a university city: in addition to the Leopold-Franzens-Universität, there has been an independent Medical University of Innsbruck since 2004. Around 300,000 people live in the urban area, and with 1.87 million overnight stays a year, tourism plays a major role. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.

Above the city lie the Nordkette and Bergisel, and in the old town the Golden Roof. For newcomers from Germany: no customs duty on household goods within the EU, but the Meldezettel must be submitted within three days; for stays of more than three months, the registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) is also required. More destinations from Berlin-Moabit

We plan moves from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) for private and business customers – including to other EU countries such as Austria. What matters for cross-border moves is explained under International move; long routes can be found under Long-distance moves. We also plan the route from Innsbruck back to Berlin with you.

No-stopping zone and loading when moving in Innsbruck

In Innsbruck, the Road Traffic and Road Law Department (Referat Straßenverkehr und Straßenrecht) is responsible for permits relating to loading. According to the city of Innsbruck, loading is generally possible free of charge throughout the city, including in short-stay parking zones. You need an exemption permit under § 45 (2) of the Austrian Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) if you load in a no-stopping zone, on the pavement or in the pedestrian zone after 10.30 am, or would otherwise contravene driving bans and other traffic regulations. For a move, this concerns narrow access routes in the old town, for example.

For a temporary loading zone, the city recommends getting in touch ten days in advance. The permit is granted if there is a considerable personal or economic interest, or the activity would otherwise not be possible, and no significant disruption is to be expected. According to the city, the costs “vary”; the page does not give amounts.

The application asks for your contact details, the loading period, registration number and vehicle type (for lorries, the maximum permissible gross weight), the zone concerned, whether the trips are one-off or repeated, and a justification. Contact: Maria-Theresien-Straße 18, 6020 Innsbruck, +43 512 5360 8216, [email protected]; counter hours Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. The city's page shows information as of 29.09.2022, so confirm the details in advance. How we plan long-distance moves to Austria is explained under Long-distance move and in the guide Moving to Innsbruck.

Meldezettel in Innsbruck: registering your residence after the move

In Austria you register your new residence with the Meldezettel (registration form). According to the city of Innsbruck, you must register within three days of moving in, each household member individually, including children. The Meldezettel must be filled in completely and signed by your landlord; the easiest way is to have this done when signing the tenancy agreement or at the key handover. If you are only switching between main and secondary residence (re-registration), a deadline of one month applies according to the city.

You must bring original public documents proving your name, date of birth, place of birth and nationality (for example a passport or birth certificate), as well as an official photo ID. Non-Austrian nationals also need a valid original travel document.

The Registration and Residents Department (Referat Melde- und Einwohnerwesen), Maria-Theresien-Straße 18, 1st floor, 6020 Innsbruck, is responsible. Registration is free of charge. You can also send it by post or courier, or complete it online via oesterreich.gv.at if you are of age and have an ID Austria; registration by e-mail is not possible. Because of the three-day deadline, plan your visit to the department or the online registration for the first few days after the move, and keep ID and documents to hand instead of packing them in moving boxes. Everyday tips for the first few weeks are gathered in the guide to living in Innsbruck.

Always one step ahead.
