MOVING FROM BERLIN-MOABIT

New in Görlitz

Görlitz: Heritage Town on the Neisse, Opposite Zgorzelec

– Guide for newcomers

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handles your move to Görlitz; this guide helps you settle in.

Görlitz is Germany's easternmost city, the administrative seat of the district of Görlitz and the largest town in Upper Lusatia. Since 1945 the Lusatian Neisse has formed the border with Poland; the former districts on the other bank are today the town of Zgorzelec, with which Görlitz has formed a European City since 1998. Because the old town remained almost undamaged in the war, Görlitz, with over 4,000 mostly restored listed monuments, is one of the largest heritage ensembles in Germany. More than 120 films have been shot here, including scenes for “The Grand Budapest Hotel” – hence the nickname “Görliwood”.

For newcomers, daily life begins at the Bürgerbüro Jägerkaserne (citizens' office), Hugo-Keller-Straße 14: this is where you register within two weeks, or alternatively online. Employers include the Städtisches Klinikum, the only hospital in the district providing specialised care, Siemens Energy with its industrial steam turbine plant, and the Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz; Alstom's railway carriage plant stopped production at the end of 2025. We do not give specific rents. We handle the transport from Berlin as a home removal.

What we take on – and what is up to you

Transport, assembly, access

We have no branch in Görlitz: the lorry sets off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 220 km via the A13 and A15. Beforehand we ask about the floor, lift and access – whether in the old town, the city centre or Königshufen. On request, we apply in good time to the responsible authority for the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) outside your new address. We give you the fixed price after the survey; liability is under § 451e HGB (€620 per m³). You take care of registering at the Bürgerbüro Jägerkaserne or online yourself – within two weeks of moving in. In the old town, according to the city, the no-parking signs must be in place three full days in advance.

Packing Service

We pack crockery, books and electronics so they will not break and label every box by destination room – so in Görlitz you will find your bedding and kettle on the first evening.

Furniture assembly

We dismantle beds, wardrobes and shelves in Berlin and reassemble them in Görlitz; the screws travel along labelled, so that your first night is spent in your own bed.

Storage

If the new flat in Görlitz is not yet available, we store your furniture in the meantime and deliver on the handover date – handy if you need a temporary interim solution.

Parking restriction

On request, we apply in good time for the parking restriction zone outside your new address in Görlitz, so that the lorry can stop right outside the front door on moving day.

Six Things for Your First Weeks in Görlitz

The removal van is empty – now the settling in begins. Newcomers to Görlitz should take care of these six points in the first few weeks; we handle transport, assembly and the parking restriction, while the visits to the authorities are up to you.

01

Registration within two weeks

Under § 17 BMG, you register at the Bürgerbüro Jägerkaserne within two weeks of moving in. It is best to book the appointment before moving day.
02

Landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)

Without your landlord's confirmation (§ 19 BMG), registration in Görlitz will not work. Ask for it at the key handover at the latest.
03

Choosing a district

Görlitz has nine districts, from the old town and Nikolaivorstadt to Königshufen, Rauschwalde and Weinhübel, plus five rural villages in the south.
04

Use the tram

Two tram lines connect Königshufen with Weinhübel and Biesnitz, and there are also seven city bus lines – one of them crossing the border to Zgorzelec.
05

Book a bulky waste collection

According to the city, bulky waste, scrap metal and electrical appliances can be collected free of charge twice a year – via the bulky waste card, the waste app or the waste disposal company.

If you bring a car, report the new address to the vehicle registration authority without delay (§ 15 FZV); you may keep your existing number plate.

Offices, flat, everyday life

Anyone moving to Görlitz has quite a lot to do in the first few weeks: registering at the Bürgerbüro Jägerkaserne or online within two weeks, the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) – according to the city a tenancy agreement is not enough – and, in the old town, the resident parking permit. Then there is the choice between the dense old-building quarters, the residential areas of Königshufen, Rauschwalde and Weinhübel, and Biesnitz, which is characterised more by family homes. This guide brings together what newcomers should know.

Paperwork and deadlines

There is a deadline for registration at the Bürgerbüro Jägerkaserne: two weeks after moving in. Keep your ID and landlord confirmation to hand and book an appointment early. Your bank, insurers and employer also need your new address in Görlitz.

Flat and neighbourhood

Take a look at your future neighbourhood – whether the old town, the city centre or Königshufen – once at rush hour, and clarify the floor, lift and access. We also need this information for the fixed price of your move to Görlitz.

Organising everyday life

Two tram lines and seven bus lines run by the Görlitzer Verkehrsbetriebe connect the districts. You apply for the resident parking permit at the road traffic department, and should ask the City of Görlitz about nursery and school places early.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Görlitz

Registration, neighbourhoods, transport links and moving to Görlitz – answered briefly.
The cost depends on the size of the flat, the floor and accessibility; from Berlin it is around 220 km. Our scale starts at €344 for a 1-room flat, and we give you the binding fixed price after the survey. For old buildings without a lift in the old town, we factor in the actual carrying effort.

Districts in Görlitz: from the Old Town to Königshufen

Görlitz is divided into nine districts – Altstadt (old town), Biesnitz, Innenstadt (city centre), Klingewalde, Königshufen, Nikolaivorstadt, Rauschwalde, Südstadt and Weinhübel – plus five rural villages. The old town and Nikolaivorstadt are densely built up, with narrow streets and tall old buildings right down to the Neisse; all around lie the extensive Gründerzeit quarters of the city centre.

In Königshufen, Rauschwalde and Weinhübel, blocks of flats built by the municipal and cooperative housing sector dominate, and the WBS 70 prefab type is found mainly in Königshufen. In Biesnitz there are more family homes between former villas. We do not give specific rents because we have no reliable source; housing companies and cooperatives are good first points of contact.

Work, Science and Leisure in Görlitz

The Städtisches Klinikum is the only hospital in the district providing specialised care. Siemens Energy manufactures industrial steam turbines in Görlitz and employed around 960 people in 2018. The long-established railway carriage plant – most recently Alstom – ended production in December 2025; according to Wikipedia, its sale to KNDS has been announced. Science is growing: alongside the Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz, TU Dresden, Leipzig University, Fraunhofer groups, the Senckenberg Museum and the Helmholtz centre CASUS are represented.

For leisure, the Old Town Festival on the last weekend in August attracts around 100,000 visitors, and to the south lies Lake Berzdorf, a flooded opencast mine. Via the A 4 you reach Dresden in about 90 km, and the station is a hub for lines to Dresden, Berlin, Zittau and Poland.

Moving prices by flat size

The exact moving costs depend on many factors, but as a guide: 1-room flats from €344, 2-room flats from €609, 3-room flats from €889 and 4-room flats from €1,309. Larger properties such as houses or villas are calculated individually. Where distance has to be taken into account, we charge long-distance moves from €4.10/km. A free survey at your home brings clarity.

What the price depends on

  • Distance: from €4.10/km
  • Total volume of the household goods
  • Floor without a lift
  • Need for a parking restriction zone

Optional extras: furniture assembly, shared load.

Services for Your Move to Görlitz

Everything from a single source – from the initial advice to the very last task.

From Berlin to Görlitz – and Back

We come from Berlin-Moabit; it is around 220 km to Görlitz via the A13 and A15, and the lorry takes about three hours. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Görlitz, other destinations in the locations overview. The return trip to Berlin is also possible.

Registering in Görlitz: Bürgerbüro Jägerkaserne and Online Appointments

Anyone moving to Görlitz must register within two weeks of moving in under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz). The responsible office is the residents' registration service at the Bürgerbüro Jägerkaserne, Hugo-Keller-Straße 14, 02826 Görlitz. The city recommends booking an appointment online and points out that registering your address can also be done online via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de.

Opening hours according to the city: Monday 8 am to 12 noon, Tuesday 9 am to 12 noon and 1:30 pm to 6 pm, Thursday 8 am to 12 noon and 1:30 pm to 5 pm, and Friday 8 am to 12 noon. Send enquiries to +49 3581 67-2737 or [email protected].

The landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) is important. According to the City of Görlitz, the landlord must confirm the move-in in writing; a tenancy agreement is not sufficient. The confirmation states the landlord's name and address, the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of those registering; if the owner is not the landlord, the owner's name and address are added. It should be issued within two weeks of moving in, and landlords who fail to do so may be fined. If you move into a property you own, you issue it yourself. The city provides a template.

According to the city, you can also buy residual waste bags and leaf bags at the Bürgerbüro Jägerkaserne. Further information on the city can be found on our page Moving in Görlitz.

Görlitz: Resident Parking in the Old Town, Parking Restrictions and Bulky Waste

Parking in the Görlitz old town is subject to special rules. According to the city, resident parking permits are issued by the road traffic department; you can also apply online via Amt 24. Under § 45 (1b) no. 2a of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), you must have your main residence registered in the area and actually live there; there is only one permit per person, and you must have no other parking option such as a garage or parking space. It costs €60 for six months or €120 for one year. In the old town (no-parking zone “UM”), according to the city, resident parking is only permitted within the arrow markings on the kerb.

For the move itself, you apply for the parking restrictions at the road traffic department. According to the city, the administrative fee is €14, and the application form is available online ([email protected]). The signs must be put up at least three full days before the moving date and removed afterwards. Blocking off spaces yourself with chairs, ropes or other objects is not allowed. If you hire a removal company, the parking restriction zone is usually part of the service.

According to the city, bulky waste, scrap metal and old electrical and electronic appliances can be booked for free collection twice a year, via the bulky waste card in the waste calendar, the district's waste app or the waste disposal company. Alternatively, you can drop them off at the Görlitz recycling centre at Heilige-Grab-Straße 69. More about moving to the city: Guide to moving to Görlitz.
