New in Chemnitz: Registration Districts and Daily Life at the Edge of the Ore Mountains

Chemnitz Guide
Arriving in Chemnitz, Between Industrial Heritage and the Ore Mountains
The first few weeks
Chemnitz lies on the northern edge of the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) and is named after the river of the same name. In the 19th century, industry earned the city the nickname "Saxon Manchester"; it was then that the Wilhelminian-era quarters of Brühl, Sonnenberg and Kaßberg were built. On 28 October 2020, Chemnitz was chosen as European Capital of Culture 2025, and the opening took place on 18 January 2025. Chemnitz is the seat of the Saxon State Directorate; you can get most places by tram, bus or bike.
The city is divided into 39 districts, including eight localities. Around the Kaßberg stand Wilhelminian-era buildings, Sonnenberg and Brühl lie close to the centre, and on the outskirts there are rural localities. Which district suits you depends on your commute, school and budget. We come from Berlin and handle your home removal; the route and journey time are described on the page Moving Berlin – Chemnitz.

What We Handle – and What Is Up to You in Chemnitz
Transport from Berlin, paperwork on your side
We have no branch in Saxony; instead, we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit, around 266 km via the A13 and A4 – about three and a half hours including a break. We ask about the floor, staircase and access in advance, because a Wilhelminian-era staircase on the Kaßberg makes different demands than a house on the outskirts. We plan the parking restriction in good time. For your belongings we accept liability under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). Registration, re-registering your car and bulky waste are up to you; further destinations can be found under locations.

One Room for Chemnitz? Shared Load
With a shared load, your belongings share the load space with other consignments heading for Saxony – a good fit for students at TU Chemnitz or young professionals with few household goods. When you enquire, we tell you whether a trip is currently planned; liability under the HGB applies here too.

What
Newcomers to Chemnitz Should Know
A move to Chemnitz raises a few practical questions: where do I register, how does the Chemnitz model with tram-trains into the surrounding area work, and which district suits my everyday life? If you are starting at the Volkswagen engine plant, at Union Werkzeugmaschinen or at TU Chemnitz, plan your routes to work before choosing a flat. Register children early at nursery or school, and the ASR provides information on waste bins. We handle moving day itself from Berlin, with packing, transport and assembly; if the flat is not yet available, we store your belongings in between. More on further routes can be found under long-distance moves.

Frequently Asked Questions from New Residents in Chemnitz
39 Districts – Where New Residents Live in Chemnitz
Chemnitz is divided into 39 districts, including eight localities. In the last third of the 19th century, the residential quarters of Brühl, Sonnenberg and Kaßberg were built; to this day the Kaßberg is a Wilhelminian-era quarter with views over the centre. The centre and adjacent districts such as Kaßberg, Sonnenberg and Bernsdorf have many pubs and cafés – compared with other university cities, the city has a high density of pubs.
On the outskirts lie more rural localities with detached houses. We deliberately do not quote specific rents here; compare offers and, before committing, also look at the staircase, the parking situation and the surroundings. We then plan vehicle and carriers for your home removal accordingly.
Working and Studying in Chemnitz
Chemnitz is traditionally a centre of mechanical engineering and the automotive industry: the Volkswagen engine plant, Union Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH and Hörmann Rawema are based in the city, and Continental and IBM have branches. Since 1995, more than 7,000 new companies have been founded in Chemnitz and the region. TU Chemnitz traces its origins to the Royal Trade School founded in 1836; the central lecture hall building is on Reichenhainer Straße.
As European Capital of Culture 2025, Chemnitz experienced a whole year of events. Also well known are the Karl Marx Monument from 1971 and the DAStietz cultural centre with the Museum of Natural History and the Petrified Forest. The Ore Mountains begin right on the city's edge – ideal for weekend trips.

From Berlin to Chemnitz – and Back

Registration in Chemnitz: Two-Week Deadline and Landlord Confirmation
If you move to Chemnitz, under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act you must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. This applies to every new flat, even if you come from another Saxon city. Count the deadline from the day you actually move in, and therefore plan the appointment before moving day.
It does not work without a document from your landlord: under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, your landlord must confirm the move-in in writing or electronically. The landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) contains the name and address of the landlord, the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of everyone required to register. Ask your landlord for it early so that the document is available on moving day. If several people are moving in, all names should be on the confirmation. Also bring your identity card or passport.
Which citizens' service office of the city of Chemnitz to visit, how to get an appointment and which opening hours apply is best checked directly on the city of Chemnitz's pages; changes can be made there at any time. The Free State of Saxony's Amt24 service portal also leads to the registration of a flat via its search. Everything else about the process of your move can be found in the Chemnitz moving guide.
Bulky Waste and Recycling Centres in Chemnitz Before the Move
Before moving out of the old flat or after moving into the new one, there is often bulky waste left over. In Chemnitz, according to ASR Chemnitz, households can have typical household bulky waste collected free of charge once a year. Private households may book up to 20 m³ per year; beyond that, charges are made according to the fee regulations.
You order online via the ASR website or with the paper bulky waste card, which is available at the recycling centres, at customer service and at the citizens' service offices. State the type and number of items and the collection address. Collection usually takes place within four weeks of ordering, Monday to Friday. The ASR announces the date in writing at least four calendar days in advance. Put the booked items out in front of the property by 6 am on collection day, at the earliest from 6 pm the evening before. Each item must be carryable by two people (maximum 80 kg), and access must be clear and safe.
Building rubble, doors, windows, textiles and garden waste do not count as bulky waste. If you deliver it yourself, you can drop off bulky waste free of charge at the recycling centres; according to the ASR, they are open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8 am to 6 pm, on Wednesdays from 10 am to 7 pm and on Saturdays from 7 am to 3 pm. If you need to clear a whole flat, our house clearance can help; further tips on moving can be found on the Chemnitz location page.
