Moving to Freiberg: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Central Saxony
Moving to Freiberg: mining town between Dresden and Chemnitz
Guide
Whether it is a student move to the TU Bergakademie, a family move to the old town or a company relocation – Freiberg in Central Saxony (not to be confused with Freiburg im Breisgau) has narrow lanes and limited parking. For your move to Freiberg we plan the parking restriction, parking spot and carrying routes with you in advance; according to the city, the application must be submitted at least 14 days before the move. Details on our services can be found under Private move and Long-distance moves.
Around 41,000 people live in the old silver town of Freiberg, the district town of the Mittelsachsen district on the northern edge of the Ore Mountains. The TU Bergakademie, founded in 1765, brings students to the town, and semiconductor and solar companies bring skilled workers. We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive our lorry around 238 km via the A13 and A4 to the Siebenlehn exit, a good three hours. We quote the fixed price after the survey; the route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Freiberg.

What we handle when you move to Freiberg
Planning from Berlin, arrival in the mining town
We have no branch in Freiberg; instead we come with our lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is an old building in the old town around the cathedral and Obermarkt, a flat in Freiberg-Ost or a house in Zug. We plan the parking restriction and, if the pavement is blocked, the permit for the furniture lift in line with the city's deadlines. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

Move affordably with a part load
For a shared-flat room at the start of semester at the TU Bergakademie or single pieces of furniture, a part load to Freiberg can be cheaper: your belongings share the loading space with other consignments heading to Saxony.

Everything
for your move
A move to Freiberg brings typical tasks with it: registering with the registration authority within two weeks, a parking restriction with 14 days' notice and choosing the right district. Students at the TU Bergakademie often look in the town centre or in Freiberg-Ost, while families also look in Zug, Halsbach or Kleinwaltersdorf. We advise you on access, parking spot and floors so that nothing is left to chance on moving day. Further places can be found under Locations.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Freiberg
The districts of Freiberg at a glance
The old town of Freiberg, with St Mary's Cathedral and its large Silbermann organ, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region since 2019. Anyone moving into a renovated period flat here must reckon with narrow access routes and scarce parking – a point we plan for on every move. Around the old town lie the districts of Freiberg-Nord (with Friedeburg and Loßnitz), Freiberg-Ost, Freiberg-Süd and Freiberg-West.
On the edge of town follow the districts of Zug, Halsbach and Kleinwaltersdorf, with more detached houses. For the move, the specific address counts: an old building without a lift in the town centre needs different planning from a house in Halsbach. Where the van can stand and whether a parking restriction is needed, we clarify during the survey.
TU Bergakademie, semiconductors and quality of life
We do not give specific rents – they depend heavily on location and state of renovation. The TU Bergakademie Freiberg, founded in 1765 and the oldest existing university of mining sciences in the world, ensures a steady influx of young people. Freiberg is part of the Silicon Saxony semiconductor network; companies based here include Siltronic and Freiberger Compound Materials, plus Freiberger Brauhaus AG as a traditional employer.
People who move to Freiberg appreciate the short distances and the location between Dresden and Chemnitz, both reachable via the B173; to Berlin you take the A4 and A13. The terra mineralia mineral exhibition in Freudenstein Castle and the historic old town shape the townscape. Our private moving service accompanies you from the survey to the last box.
Prices by size of home
The bigger the flat, the greater the effort – and that is reflected in our prices. For a 1-room flat you pay from €369, for 2 rooms from €589. For 3 rooms the price starts at €884, for 4 rooms at €1,279. Larger properties such as houses or villas receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves we charge from €3.85/km. Get advice during a free survey.
All about your moving price
The final price results from the volume of your household goods, the distance driven (from €3.85/km) and local conditions such as floor and lift. For a smooth process we also recommend a parking restriction zone. In addition, furniture assembly and part load are available to you.

Parking restriction for removal transport in Freiberg: application, deadline and authority
According to freiberg.de, you apply for a parking restriction for your move in Freiberg to the city administration's road traffic law section (Sachgebiet Straßenverkehrsrecht), Heubnerstraße 15, 09599 Freiberg. The application can be made informally or submitted online via Amt24. The legal basis is § 45 (6) of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO).
The city lists this information for the application: name and address, reason for the closure, location and area, duration, and an overview plan or sketch. Two deadlines are important:
- The application should be submitted at least 14 days before the move begins.
- After approval, the zone must be set up with the prescribed traffic signs at least three to four days before the move begins.
According to the city, the fees depend on the extent of the restriction; additional costs may arise for the signs. The page does not give specific amounts. According to freiberg.de, the authority can be reached on Tuesdays 9–12 and 13–18, Thursdays 9–12 and 13–16 and Fridays 9–12, by phone on 03731 273 363.
We support you in planning the parking restriction zone and determine during the survey how much space the removal van needs. Submit the application as soon as possible after the date is confirmed, because the city requires it at least 14 days before the move begins.
Furniture lift, pavement and pedestrian zone when moving to Freiberg
Not every move in Freiberg needs a permit, but some situations make one necessary. On freiberg.de the city distinguishes two cases:
- Can be applied for: if loading and unloading in moving traffic is not possible without disruption, for example in a pedestrian zone.
- Must be applied for: if the pavement is fully or partly blocked, for example by a furniture lift.
This is important for period flats without a lift. If wardrobes and sofas are difficult to move through a staircase, an external lift is the answer. If the lift stands on the pavement and blocks it fully or partly, the city says a permit is required. Talk to us about the access to your building so that we can fix the position of the lift during the survey. Keep the deadlines in mind when scheduling: 14 days' notice for the application, then the signs three to four days before the move.
Especially for student moves at the start of semester, it pays to fix dates early, because the authority can only be reached at set times and on Fridays only in the morning. On request, we also handle reassembly, see Moving with assembly. How we plan small moves is shown in our offer for student moves.
Local information for newcomers can be found under Living in Freiberg; the location page is Moving company Freiberg.
