Newcomer's Guide to Freiberg
Freiberg: Mining Town, University Town, District Town
for newcomers
Freiberg lies roughly in the middle of Saxony, around 31 km each from Dresden and Chemnitz, on the northern slopes of the Ore Mountains. The major district town is the administrative seat of the district of Central Saxony (Mittelsachsen); according to the town administration, around 40,500 people lived in the town proper, excluding its outlying villages, at the end of 2022. For around 800 years mining and smelting shaped the Silver Town; today it is semiconductor and solar technology. Founded in 1765, the TU Bergakademie is regarded as the oldest existing mining university in the world and, according to Wikipedia, is the town's most important employer. If you move here, you register at the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro) on the Obermarkt within two weeks.
The entire historic town centre is a listed heritage area and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region since 2019. On the Untermarkt stands the late Gothic St. Mary's Cathedral (1484–1501), and the town theatre of 1790 is regarded as the oldest continuously operating town theatre in the world. In industry, companies such as Siltronic and Freiberger Compound Materials are based here. The west, with the town park and Friedeburg, is considered a preferred residential area, and in the south-west the Hospitalwald woodland with its open-air pool adjoins the town. We handle the transport from Berlin as a home removal.

Resident Parking Permit and Citizens' Office in Freiberg: Requirements and Application
In Freiberg, the resident parking permit is applied for at the same office as registration: the passport and registration authority in the citizens' office at Obermarkt 21. According to the town, an administrative fee of 30.00 euros is charged. The requirement is that your main or secondary residence is registered in the resident parking zone and that you do not own a garage or other parking space in the zone. The vehicle must be registered in your name; if you are not the keeper, you need written proof of permanent use.
This is how to proceed:
- In person: with an appointment or spontaneously (then with waiting time), with a valid ID, vehicle registration certificate and, if applicable, proof of use; a representative needs a power of attorney.
- Online: via the VOIS portal with the number plate and personal details, uploading the documents and paying by PayPal. The permit is then collected at the Bürgerhaus without an appointment or sent to you for a fee.
According to the town, the citizens' office is open Monday to Saturday mornings, and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons as well; on the first Thursday of the month until 18:00, and on Saturdays only every two weeks. Behind the town hall there are parking spaces for holders of a disabled parking permit.
If you are coming because of the TU Bergakademie, which according to the town has four core fields (geo, materials, energy and environment), you will find suitable help on our page on the student move. More on moves into the town: Moving in Freiberg.
