Moving to Görlitz: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Görlitz
Moving to Görlitz: old town, Neisse and Landeskrone
Guide
Görlitz is Germany's easternmost city and the largest in Upper Lusatia; the Lusatian Neisse separates it from its Polish neighbour Zgorzelec, with which it has formed the European City since 1998. Because the Görlitz old town survived the Second World War almost undamaged, the city, with around 4,000 listed monuments, is considered Germany's largest heritage area. Narrow streets, cobblestones and Gründerzeit staircases are therefore part of planning your private move in Görlitz – as is the parking restriction outside the door.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 220 km via the A13 and A15 and through Lusatia to Görlitz; with the statutory break that takes about three hours. Whether an old building in the Nikolaivorstadt or a modern flat in Königshufen: we clarify parking restrictions, carrying routes and assembly in advance and then give you a fixed price. More about our offer under Private move; the route is described on the page Berlin – Görlitz move.

What we handle on your move to Görlitz
Planned in Berlin, arriving in Upper Lusatia
We have no branch in Görlitz; instead we come with the lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify access, floor and staircase in advance – from a narrow old building around the Obermarkt and Untermarkt to a house in Biesnitz near the Landeskrone. We plan the parking restriction according to the city's rules; you clarify any heritage protection questions about the building with your landlord or property management. We give you the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Not much to move? Part load!

From
planning to the citizens' office
A move to Görlitz brings a few city-specific issues: narrow cobbled streets in the old town and Nikolaivorstadt, a parking restriction requiring a permit from the city and the proximity to the Polish border at Zgorzelec. If you move to the new housing estates of Königshufen or Rauschwalde, access roads are usually wider. Families choosing districts such as Ludwigsdorf or Schlauroth should clarify routes to nursery and school early. We will advise you on which date makes sense for your new district.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Görlitz
Districts at a glance: where you will live in Görlitz
Görlitz is divided into nine districts – Altstadt, Innenstadt, Nikolaivorstadt, Südstadt, Biesnitz, Klingewalde, Königshufen, Rauschwalde and Weinhübel – as well as localities such as Hagenwerder, Kunnerwitz, Ludwigsdorf and Schlauroth. The Altstadt and Nikolaivorstadt are characterised by narrow streets and tall old buildings, some reaching down to the banks of the Neisse; the Innenstadt and Südstadt by continuous Gründerzeit development.
From 1975 onwards, the new housing estates of Königshufen and Rauschwalde were built with multi-storey blocks of flats. Biesnitz lies near the 420 m high Landeskrone, and south of Weinhübel the Berzdorfer See, a flooded opencast mine, stretches to Hagenwerder and Tauchritz. For your move, the address matters: an old flat on the Untermarkt needs different planning from a house in Ludwigsdorf. During the survey we clarify the lift, staircase width and parking space so that the porters and time in the fixed price are right; we measure heavy items beforehand.
Work, university and leisure in Görlitz
We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on the district and the condition of the property. The economy is shaped by plant, machinery and rail vehicle construction: Siemens Energy manufactures industrial steam turbines in Görlitz, plus there is wagon building with a long tradition. The Städtisches Klinikum (municipal hospital) is the only hospital providing specialised care in the district, and the Malteser Krankenhaus St. Carolus is in Rauschwalde. Since 1992 Görlitz has been a university town with a campus of the Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz.
As a European City together with Zgorzelec, Poland lies directly across the Neisse. Because of its intact old town, Görlitz is known as "Görliwood": films shot here include "The Grand Budapest Hotel", "The Reader" and "Inglourious Basterds". For relaxation there is the Berzdorfer See and the Landeskrone. Anyone looking for quality of life with manageable distances will find Görlitz a special place to live – in Upper Lusatia, right on the border with Poland.

Applying for a parking restriction for your move in Görlitz
In Görlitz, the Road Traffic section (SG Straßenverkehr) at Hugo-Keller-Straße 14, room 254, is responsible for parking restrictions for moves. The city provides an application form for this. According to the city, the administrative fee is €14.00 and is payable when the permit is issued. The city does not specify a fixed application deadline. However, the signs must be in place "at least 3 full days before the moving date". Urgent cases can be clarified by phone on 03581 67 1884 or 67 1885.
- Signs are not valid without a permit. Home-made barriers with chairs, ropes or other objects are not allowed.
- After the permit has been granted, you or your removal company obtain the signs. Specialist firms and haulage companies sell them for a surcharge; a PDF list of approved sign companies can be found on the city's website.
- The signs must show the start of the measure with date and time, and they must comply with the German road traffic regulations (StVO).
- Office hours: Tuesdays 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 6:00 pm, Thursdays 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 4:00 pm, Fridays 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.
The city's page does not mention any special rules for individual old-town streets; clarify these in advance with SG Straßenverkehr. We are happy to handle the process: Parking restriction zone; details of our local service under Removal company Görlitz.
Görlitz: registration, Jägerkaserne citizens' office and bulky waste
According to the city, anyone moving to Görlitz from elsewhere must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. This can be done in person at the residents' registration office or online via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de; according to the operator, the service is free of charge. You should bring identity cards and passports for everyone to be registered and your landlord's confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), or proof of ownership if you own the property. The registration form can be downloaded from the city's website. For minors, a declaration of consent from those with parental responsibility may be required; anyone registering on behalf of others needs their own ID, that of the person concerned, a signed form and a power of attorney. The same two-week deadline applies to a move within Görlitz.
According to the city, the citizens' office in the Jägerkaserne (Hugo-Keller-Straße 14) is open on Mondays from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon, Tuesdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:30 to 6:00 pm, Thursdays from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:30 to 5:00 pm and Fridays from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon (tel. 03581 67-2727).
For bulky waste, the waste management company Görlitz-Löbau-Zittau (EGLZ) can help. According to the district, bulky waste, scrap metal and old electrical appliances can be booked for free disposal twice a year, using the card in the waste calendar or the waste app. A recycling centre also accepts bulky waste all year round with a completed card. For clearing a flat: House clearance. Everyday knowledge can be found in Living in Görlitz.
