Moving to Chemnitz: Capital of Culture 2025, Kaßberg and the university
at a glance
After Leipzig and Dresden, Chemnitz is the third-largest city in Saxony; from 1953 to 1990 it was called Karl-Marx-Stadt. The textile and engineering industries once made Chemnitz the “Saxon Manchester”; today the city is shaped by the Volkswagen engine plant, machine tool manufacturing and the Chemnitz University of Technology. In 2025 Chemnitz was European Capital of Culture. In the last third of the 19th century the residential districts of Brühl, Sonnenberg and Kaßberg were built, and their period buildings still attract many newcomers today. If you are planning a move to Chemnitz, you will find guidance here on districts, registration and costs.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 266 km via the A13 and A4 to Chemnitz; that takes about 3.5 hours including a break. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Chemnitz or from Chemnitz back to Berlin, we quote the fixed price after a survey. The route in detail is described on the page Moving Berlin – Chemnitz. If you are only taking a few pieces of furniture, a shared load is often cheaper.

How your move to Chemnitz works with us
Planned in Berlin, arriving in Saxony
We have no branch in Chemnitz; we come with the lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is a Gründerzeit building on the Kaßberg, a period flat on the Sonnenberg or a house in Rabenstein. We apply for the parking restriction zone (Halteverbot) outside the new address in good time, following the city's requirements. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the handover of the flat.

From
planning to assembly
A move to Chemnitz raises many questions: which district suits you, how does the lorry get into the Gründerzeit streets of Kaßberg or Sonnenberg, which documents are needed for registration and what should you know about waste? This guide introduces districts from the Kaßberg and the Sonnenberg to Rabenstein, explains the duty to register, the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung), the ASR and the CVAG, and describes the drive of around 266 km from Berlin via the A13 and A4. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Chemnitz
The districts of Chemnitz at a glance
The Kaßberg is considered one of the largest continuous Gründerzeit districts in Germany and is popular with young families and culture lovers, even though rents here are above the city average. In recent years the Sonnenberg has developed into a creative, trendy district with cafés, studios and affordable housing, and attracts students of TU Chemnitz in particular. If you prefer things quieter, Rabenstein or Reichenbrand offer green areas of detached houses on the edge of the city with good links to the A4 and A72 motorways.
Close to the centre and well connected, Schloßchemnitz appeals to many commuters with its mix of period buildings and modern new builds. Altendorf and Helbersdorf also offer affordable housing in prefabricated-block and renovation areas that are increasingly in demand. For your private move to one of these districts, we plan access, parking zones and floor logistics individually with you.
Moving costs to Chemnitz: what you should budget for
We do not give specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition; compared with Munich or Berlin, Chemnitz is considered affordable. The actual moving costs depend on the size of the flat, the floor, access and any extra services you want, such as packing or assembly. From Berlin-Moabit it is around 266 km via the A13 and A4, about three and a half hours by lorry including a break; loading and unloading are therefore often possible in one day.
Our guide prices by number of rooms and the price per kilometre can be found in the price overview on this page. We quote the binding fixed price after a survey. If you are only taking a few pieces of furniture, you save with a shared load; if you are moving into a period building without a lift, you should plan enough movers and a parking restriction zone.

Moving from Berlin to Chemnitz: duty to register and the landlord confirmation
If you move from Berlin to Chemnitz, you stay in the same country and have no border formalities to deal with. What remains are the registration requirements. Under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG), you must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. The law only requires you to deregister at your old place of residence if you move out without taking up a new home in Germany. When moving from Berlin to Chemnitz, registering at the new place of residence is therefore enough.
For this you need the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung). Under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, your landlord is obliged to cooperate with the registration. The confirmation contains:
- the name and address of the landlord, and also the owner's name if different,
- the date of moving in,
- the address of the flat,
- the names of the people who have to register.
The landlord can send it to the registration authority in writing or electronically. If the confirmation does not arrive, you must inform the registration authority without delay. So ask your landlord for it before the moving day, so that you do not miss the deadline.
Have the moving date set so that there is enough time for registration. Which organisations you should notify after the change of address is explained in the article Change of address: who to notify?. Details on the service area can be found on the page Moving Chemnitz, and everyday life is described in the guide Living in Chemnitz.
Settling in Chemnitz: registering for waste collection with the ASR and local transport with the CVAG
After moving in, it is worth looking at waste collection. The ASR Chemnitz states that the fees start in the month you move in if you move in by the 15th day of the month, otherwise in the following month. Registrations and deregistrations are made using the registration form for waste collection and street cleaning (An- und Abmeldung zur Abfallentsorgung/Straßenreinigung/Änderungsmitteilung Eigentümer). The ASR gives the basic fee as €39.60 per household per year; emptying fees are added depending on the size of the bin. Questions are answered by customer service on 0371 4095-777 (Tuesdays and Thursdays until 6 pm).
According to the ASR, cardboard and paper moving boxes do not count as bulky waste but go in the paper bin. You can have bulky waste collected free of charge once a year or take it to the recycling centres yourself. The recycling centres are open Monday to Friday during the day and on Saturdays from 7 am to 3 pm.
For getting to work or the shops, the Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG) offers single tickets, day tickets, monthly tickets and the Deutschlandticket. According to its website, the Deutschlandticket has cost €63 per month at the CVAG since 1 January 2026; you order it as a subscription online or at the CVAG Service Center. If your employer takes part, the Deutschland-Jobticket is also available.
Check the costs and deadlines mentioned on the providers' websites before you move, as fees and prices can change.
