Living in Plauen
Plauen: a fresh start in the lace city on the White Elster
Districts, work, offices
A move to Plauen takes you to the largest town in the Vogtland: around 65,000 inhabitants, five city areas and 39 districts. Plauen is known as the lace city (Spitzenstadt) – the history of Plauen lace is now on display at the Fabrik der Fäden in the Weisbachsches Haus. Many flats are in late-19th-century buildings with narrow stairwells, others in larger housing estates on the outskirts. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and plan every private move to Plauen with a survey and a fixed price. You can find out more about our range of services under private move.
From Berlin it is 309 km via the A9 and the A72, which passes the south-east of the town with the Pirk, Plauen-Süd and Plauen-Ost junctions. With a break, a lorry needs around four hours – so a move is often possible in a single day. For period buildings with narrow stairs we plan staff and materials accordingly. Frequently asked questions about moving to Plauen
Five city areas, 39 districts: Plauen at a glance
Plauen is divided into five city areas – Zentrum, Nord, Ost, Süd and West – with a total of 39 districts. The Zentrum (centre) is home to shopping streets, the Theater Plauen-Zwickau and the Malzhaus, a cultural centre with a gallery, cinema and open-air stage. Around the city centre, late-19th-century buildings shape the scene, for example in Preißelpöhl and Haselbrunn; in the east lie Reusa and Chrieschwitz with larger housing estates.
The town also includes the villages of Neundorf, Jößnitz, Kauschwitz, Straßberg, Großfriesen and Oberlosa. Things are more rural there, and the journeys into the centre are longer. For the move, what matters most is how close the van can get to the entrance – we check this during the survey.
Employers, education and housing market in Plauen
The housing market in Plauen is considered relaxed compared with Leipzig or Dresden; the largest landlord is the Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Plauen housing company with around 7,700 flats. Actual rents vary by location and state of renovation – compare current listings. Important employers are the Helios Vogtland-Klinikum hospital, the Sternquell brewery, Plauen Stahl Technologie, Vogtlandmilch and the lamp manufacturer vosla. The Berufsakademie Plauen offers dual study programmes in areas such as health and social management, retail and technical management.
The A72 from Hof to Chemnitz runs right past Plauen; at the Hochfranken interchange the A93 branches off towards Regensburg, and the A9 is around 35 km away. Culturally, the theatre, the Malzhaus with the Plauener Folkherbst festival and the tradition of Plauen lace shape the town. Many newcomers appreciate its manageable size and its proximity to Bavaria and Czechia.

Parking restriction for your move in Plauen: application at the road traffic authority
In Plauen you submit the application for a parking restriction to the town's road traffic authority (Unterer Graben 1, 08523 Plauen). Under "Forms and online applications", the town offers the application "No-stopping signs and containers (for private individuals, e.g. for a move)". The form is titled "Application for the ordering of traffic control measures under §§ 45, 46 StVO and special use". In it you enter your details, the district, street and house number from and to, the duration and a reason, plus the area required with its length and width and the type of area (pavement, roadway or parking area).
According to the form, by submitting the application you declare that you are responsible for putting up the traffic signs properly and that you will bear the costs. The office expressly invites you to discuss the application in person with its staff.
The form says nothing about deadlines. As a guide, the Vogtland district publishes the following, based on Saxon regulations: the application should be submitted at least 14 days before the move begins, and after approval the parking restriction must be signposted at least four days before the move begins. The fee depends on the extent of the restriction; costs for traffic signs may be added, and you borrow the signs from the administration. If a furniture lift blocks the pavement completely or partially, a permit is mandatory.
How we prepare moving day on site is explained on the page parking restriction zone; you can find our location under Moving company in Plauen.
Moving to Plauen: registration, bulky waste and outlying villages
After moving in, according to the town of Plauen, you must register with the registration office within two weeks. The passport and registration office is at Unterer Graben 1; you book appointments online. On Fridays from 8 am to 12 noon you can visit without an appointment. You should bring your identity card or passport, civil status certificates if applicable, and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); owners need proof of ownership. Owners also register electricity, gas, water and waste; tenants clarify this with their landlord. According to the town, yellow recycling bags are available at the citizens' office.
You do not have to take old furniture with you in the removal van. According to the town of Plauen, bulky waste can be collected on application or via an online form; the town quotes €10 for this and refers you to the Vogtland district office. You can drop off bulky waste free of charge at the Plauen recycling centre on Klopstockstraße. According to the town, leaving bulky waste at glass containers is strictly prohibited. We clear larger quantities as part of a house clearance.
According to plauen.de, the town includes the villages of Neundorf, Jößnitz, Kauschwitz, Straßberg, Großfriesen and Oberlosa. If you live in one of these villages, state the exact street in your enquiry and in the application: the form asks for the district, street and house number for the start and end of the parking restriction. This lets us assess access and the position of the removal van even before the survey.
