Moving to Zwickau: costs process & districts

Zwickau guide
Zwickau: car town between the Ore Mountains and the Vogtland
Districts, housing, authorities
Zwickau lies in the floodplain of the Zwickauer Mulde, on the edge of the western Ore Mountains and the Saxon Vogtland. With around 86,400 inhabitants it is the fourth-largest city in Saxony. Robert Schumann was born here in 1810, and with Horch and Audi the city's automotive history began at the start of the 20th century, a tradition continued by Volkswagen Sachsen at the Mosel plant. For your move to Zwickau we take care of packing, transport and assembly.
From the city centre with its historic buildings to the prefab housing estates in Eckersbach or Neuplanitz, every district places its own demands on a private move. We plan the parking restriction, floors and lift for your address. We are based in Berlin and drive nationwide – it is around 276 km to Zwickau, and the route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Zwickau. Also find out about our private moving services.

What we clarify before moving day in Zwickau
Parking restriction, lift, date
In Zwickau's city centre, streets are partly narrow and parking space is limited; in prefab blocks, the question of lift and floor counts. The removal van usually needs a parking restriction from the city, which must be applied for in good time – you will find the responsible office and the deadline further below. Planning, packing, transport and assembly come from a single source, and the price is set as a fixed price after the survey. Further destinations can be found under locations.

Zwickau
for newcomers
A move to Zwickau brings some city-specific questions: where is a parking restriction approved, which districts suit families and how does flat hunting work? We advise you on all topics relating to transport, from organising boxes to assembling furniture. We are also happy to answer questions about registering at the citizens' service (Bürgerservice) or finding a nursery place in a personal conversation.

Frequently asked questions about living in Zwickau
Five city boroughs, 35 districts: Zwickau at a glance
Zwickau is divided into five city boroughs (Stadtbezirke) with 35 districts. The Mitte borough contains the city centre with St Mary's Cathedral and the Nordvorstadt, the Ost borough the large prefab estates of Eckersbach as well as Pöhlau and Auerbach. The Nord borough includes Pölbitz, Weißenborn, Mosel with the Volkswagen plant and Crossen.
The West borough contains Marienthal and Brand, and the Süd borough includes Niederplanitz, Neuplanitz, Oberplanitz, Schedewitz and Cainsdorf. Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and type of housing – during the survey we clarify access and the loading route.
Cars, university and everyday life in Zwickau
Zwickau is closely tied to the automotive industry: Horch and Audi started here at the beginning of the 20th century, in GDR times the Trabant was built at the Sachsenring works, and today Volkswagen Sachsen continues the tradition at the Mosel plant. On top of that come suppliers and the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau (WHZ). We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here; compare offers on the usual portals and with the housing companies.
It is green around the Schwanenteich, which was laid out as a fish pond in 1477, and along the Mulde. Culturally, the Robert Schumann Conservatory and the August Horch Museum shape the city. Our team schedules your moving date to match the handover of the new flat.

Applying for a parking restriction and moving permit in Zwickau
In Zwickau, the lower road traffic authority (Untere Verkehrsbehörde) is responsible for a parking restriction in front of the building. According to the City of Zwickau, it is a section of the public order office (Ordnungsamt) and lists, among other things, the "ordering of traffic-regulating measures" and "permits in public traffic areas". Its page offers two relevant forms: the "application for the ordering of traffic-regulating measures under § 45 StVO" and the "exemption permit for moves/furniture delivery". For residents, the authority also offers an application for the residents' parking permit and the visitor parking card.
The authority is located at Werdauer Straße 62, 08056 Zwickau, telephone +49 375 833102. According to the city, office hours are Tuesdays from 9 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 6 pm, and Thursdays from 9 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 3 pm. Important: on these pages the city states neither application deadlines nor fees, and the authority's page bears a 2018 revision note. So ask about lead time and costs directly and allow plenty of time, so that the signs are in place on time.
If a furniture lift or container is to stand on public land, there is also an "application for special use of public traffic areas". The office will clarify whether this is necessary in your case. You can see how we take care of the signs and applications under parking restriction zone; the city page can be found under Moving in Zwickau.
Planitz, Pölbitz and re-registration: living in Zwickau
Zwickau consists of more than the city centre. According to the city, Ober- and Niederplanitz in the south were once independent villages; Planitz became part of Zwickau in 1944 and is still a district centre today with the Planitzer Markt, Schlossberg and the castle park. According to the city, a mix of Gründerzeit residential buildings, farmsteads and detached and multi-family houses is typical. Pölbitz lies in the north next to the Nordvorstadt, where the city highlights Art Nouveau town villas. In Pölbitz, a great deal of housing was built between 1950 and 1970, above all on Franz-Mehring-Straße. According to the city, the development areas of Pölbitz and Nieder-/Oberplanitz had 3,774 and 3,980 inhabitants respectively at the end of 2022.
According to the city, the largest landlord is the municipal GGZ with about 8,000 flats, alongside the cooperatives ZWG and WEWOBAU. After moving in: within two weeks you must register or re-register at the citizens' service in the town hall (Hauptmarkt 1). Bring the ID card or passport of everyone moving and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); registration is free of charge. According to the city, anyone who misses the deadline risks a fine of up to 1,000 euros.
You can book appointments online up to 35 days in advance (email address required). Städtische Verkehrsbetriebe Zwickau runs trams and buses, and the Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen provides connections to the surrounding area. More on this in the guide to forgotten re-registration.
