Namur: Where the Sambre Flows into the Meuse
First Weeks in Namur
Namur lies at the confluence of the Sambre and the Meuse, about 65 kilometres south-east of Brussels. Since December 1986, the city has been the capital of the Walloon Region and the seat of its authorities; the parliament sits in the Hospice Saint-Gilles and the government in the Élysette. Namur is also a provincial capital, a bishop's seat and a university city. The inhabitants speak almost exclusively French – so official procedures, tenancy agreements and school are all in French. Above the old town stands the citadel, and the belfry is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Important for the first weeks: according to the Belgian Ministry of the Interior (IBZ), EU citizens staying longer than three months register with the municipality within three months of arrival. An agent de quartier (neighbourhood police officer) then checks whether you really live at the address. We take care of the move itself: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive to Belgium. Route and schedule are described in our long-distance moving guide for Namur.

Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What we clarify before moving day
Parking Space, Access, Date
On its page for newcomers, the city of Namur lists the reservation of parking spaces for moves – it does not give deadlines or costs there. That is why we clarify with you early on who requests the space from the town hall and when the lorry will arrive. We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); planning, packing, transport and assembly all come from a single provider, and your belongings are covered under the HGB. Within the EU, household goods need no customs declaration. This makes your move to Namur easy to plan.

What
Newcomers Should Sort Out Early
When moving to Namur, registering with the municipality comes first: an appointment at the Espace Citoyens, followed by the visit from the agent de quartier. According to the city, many official procedures can be done around the clock via the e-Guichet. You organise electricity, internet and a bank account in parallel; if you are coming from Germany, it is best to have copies of important documents ready. For the transport, we plan a home removal from Berlin.

Questions About Living in Namur
Districts of Namur: Old Town, Bomel, Salzinnes, Jambes
The old town lies in the angle between the Sambre and the Meuse, below the citadel. The station – the most important in Wallonia by passenger numbers – separates the centre from the district of Bomel, where part of the Walloon administration is now based. To the west on the Sambre lies Salzinnes with a large SNCB marshalling yard, and opposite, on the other side of the Meuse, Jambes, connected to the centre by the Pont de Jambes.
Only with the demolition of the city walls after 1865 did Namur grow into suburbs such as Saint-Servais, Belgrade or Wépion; since the municipal reform of 1977, numerous former municipalities in the surrounding area have belonged to the city. So the address “Namur” can mean an old building in the centre just as much as a village on the Meuse.
Working, Studying and Commuting in Namur
As capital of the Walloon Region, Namur is the seat of the government, the parliament and many departments of the regional administration, plus the province and the diocese. The University of Namur and other higher education institutions bring students to the city; at the TRAKK creative hub, the university and its partners work on projects around digital technology and the creative industries. People working in the administration often commute between the centre, Bomel and Jambes.
We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here – compare offers and locations yourself. Important for commuters: around 360 trains a day pass through Namur station, including to Brussels, Luxembourg and Dinant. By car, you can reach the A4 (E411) and A15 (E42) motorways, which meet at the Daussoulx interchange near the city and lead to Brussels, Luxembourg, Charleroi and Liège.

Registering in Namur: Eight-Day Deadline, Counters and Residence Check
According to the city of Namur, anyone moving to Namur must report the change of residence to the municipality “dans les huit jours” (within eight days) of actually moving in. The obligation applies equally to Belgians and foreigners. The page does not specify whether working or calendar days are meant; if in doubt, ask the population service.
After you report, the municipality sends a neighbourhood police officer (agent de quartier), who checks whether you really live at the address and who belongs to the household. The city states that it carries out more than 10,000 such checks a year. If it is found that someone no longer lives at the address and their actual place of residence is unknown, the person can be deregistered ex officio. According to the city, this leads to the loss of social and political rights, including the right to vote.
- Counters: the “Généralistes” and “Rapides” counters are open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. On Saturdays from 8.30 to 11.30 am, appointments are available by prior booking only.
- Appointment: online at namur.be/rdv (around the clock) or by phone on 081 24 60 00 (Mon to Fri, 8 am to 12 noon).
- Location: Hôtel de Ville, 5000 Namur, in the “Espace Citoyens”.
The city page does not say which documents you must bring. Ask in advance before you book the appointment. Further orientation is provided by our guide to moving to Namur.
Arriving in Namur: Moving Parking Space, Resident's Card and e-Guichet
The city of Namur brings together information for newcomers on a dedicated page, “Nouvel·le arrivant·e”. Besides the change of address, it lists these topics, among others: reservation of parking spaces for the move, parking subscription and resident's card (carte de riverain). The overview page does not say which deadlines, forms and costs apply. So ask the town hall early on 081 24 62 46, so that the parking space really is free on moving day.
Many official procedures can be done via the e-Guichet, which according to the city is available around the clock, seven days a week. Namur's website is in French; so expect French-language forms and allow some preparation for official procedures.
Two dates are worth noting: the city administration is closed on 2 November 2026 and 11 November 2026. If you move during this period, it is better to report before or after.
The city page also offers a map application (cartographie) and a directory of departments (annuaire). Also note the city's warning: fraudulent emails are circulating that ask you to “update” your contact details. Check the sender before you reply.
