From Berlin to Graz
Moving to Graz: districts, Meldezettel and stopping space
Guide
A move to Graz takes you to Austria's second-largest city: around 307,000 people live here on both banks of the Mur, almost 63,000 of them students. The old town around the Schlossberg and Hauptplatz is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with narrow lanes and old buildings without lifts. In Eggenberg, Gries or Liebenau, access looks quite different. That is why, for your home move, we check floor, stairwell and stopping space in advance – from packing to assembly on the Mur.
Especially in districts such as Jakomini or Lend, with narrow streets and often no lifts, preparation decides how moving day goes. In Graz the roads office (Straßenamt) is responsible for the space kept clear in front of the building, and we contact it early. We quote the fixed price after a survey, and for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB. How the lorry covers the roughly 895 km from Berlin via Passau to Graz is described on the page Moving Berlin – Graz.

What we take care of when you move to Graz
Planned in Berlin, arriving on the Mur
We have no branch in Graz; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask in detail in advance what the access looks like – whether it is an old building in the listed city centre, a Gründerzeit-era flat in Geidorf or a new build on the outskirts. We coordinate the stopping space with the roads office and plan the roughly 895 km journey with two drivers or an overnight stop. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available for valuables.

Well planned to Graz
A move to Graz is a fresh start in a city with a UNESCO-listed old town, the Mur and short distances. We quote the fixed price after the survey – with packing, journey, stopping space and assembly as separate items.

Save with a part load
For smaller moves or single pieces of furniture, a part load (Beiladung) to Graz can be cheaper: your household goods share the load space with other consignments heading south. This suits students with few belongings and some flexibility on the delivery day.

Your
move, our craft
There is quite a lot to bear in mind when moving to Graz: the Meldezettel (registration form) within three days of moving in, deregistration in Berlin and a space kept clear for the removal van in densely built-up districts such as Geidorf or Lend. The choice of district also plays a role – some look for peace and quiet in Waltendorf or Mariatrost, while students want to be close to the university in Geidorf. Our home moving service adapts to the address, whichever district of Graz you are moving to.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Graz
Graz districts at a glance: city centre, university quarter, outer ring
Graz is divided into 17 urban districts. The core is formed by the Innere Stadt with the Schlossberg, clock tower and Hauptplatz – the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – together with St. Leonhard, Geidorf with the university and the regional hospital, Lend and Gries on the right bank of the Mur, and Jakomini around Jakominiplatz. Here people mostly live in old buildings, close to trams and shops, but with little space to stop.
The remaining eleven districts form the outer ring: Waltendorf, Ries and Mariatrost with its pilgrimage basilica in the east, Andritz and Gösting in the north, Eggenberg with its palace in the west, and Liebenau, Puntigam and Straßgang in the south. There are more detached houses and housing estates there, and access for the removal van is usually easier than in the city centre.
Studying, employers and everyday life in Graz
After Vienna, Graz is Austria's second-largest higher-education location: just under 63,000 students are spread across four universities, including the University of Graz in Geidorf, founded in 1585, TU Graz and the Medical University, as well as FH Joanneum. Demand for small flats is high at the start of semester; we do not quote specific rents, as they depend heavily on location and condition.
Economically, Graz is the most important location in southern Austria. The major employers include the plant engineering company Andritz AG, the vehicle manufacturer Magna Steyr with its plant in Thondorf in the Liebenau district, and the powertrain developer AVL List. Important for commuters: the Pyhrn motorway A9 and the Southern motorway A2 cross at the Graz-West interchange.

These factors affect the price

More routes from Berlin

Parking restriction and access for your move in Graz
According to the city portal, the roads office (Straßenamt), temporary-use team, is responsible in Graz for temporary orders for removals (Europaplatz 20, 8020 Graz, [email protected], tel. +43 316 872-3602). In-person visits are currently not possible; enquiries are handled by telephone or email. The page does not describe a fixed application procedure for removals, nor does it state a deadline or fee. We therefore clarify early what details the roads office needs for your street.
For exemptions from no-stopping and no-parking rules, the city of Graz also offers an online form at the roads office; among other things, a copy of the vehicle registration certificate is required. According to the city, the fees are fixed administrative charges, but the page does not state the amounts.
- Have the street, house number and preferred date ready
- State the vehicle details and the length of the space needed
- Coordinate access to the city centre with the roads office in advance
More on the route can be found in the guide Long-distance move Berlin – Graz and under Parking restriction zone.
During the survey or from your photos we determine how much space is needed in front of the building, which routes the van can take and how long the carrying distances to the flat are. These details help the roads office with its assessment and help us create a schedule that suits the situation on your street.
Meldezettel in Graz: registering after the move
In Austria you register your new residence with the Meldezettel (registration form). According to the city of Graz, anyone who moves into a flat must register, and must do so within three days of actually taking up residence – not of signing the tenancy agreement. Registration is free of charge.
- Meldezettel signed by the landlord and the tenant; a separate form for each person
- Original documents or certified copies of your personal details, for example passport and birth certificate
- An appointment at one of the city of Graz's service centres via eTermin or by telephone on +43 316 872-6666
According to the city of Graz, EU citizens can also register their main or secondary residence online with the ID Austria app or EU Login. According to Your Europe, many countries require registration for stays of more than three months; the details vary from country to country.
It is best to book the appointment before moving day so that you meet the three-day deadline. Further tips on everyday life can be found in the guide Living in Graz and in the checklist for moving to Austria.
We schedule the moving date so that you move into the flat in good time and can complete the Meldezettel on moving-in day or shortly afterwards. Keep the required documents somewhere they will not disappear into boxes while unpacking, such as a separate folder.
