Long-distance move Berlin – Graz: route process & deadlines

From Berlin to Graz
Long-distance move to Graz: 895 km to the Mur
Guide
A move to Graz is a long route: from our base on Stromstraße it is around 895 km. The lorry travels via the A9 to Hof, on via the A93 to Regensburg, the A3 to Passau and, in Austria, via the Pyhrn motorway (Pyhrnautobahn) A9 to the Styrian state capital. With statutory breaks we expect about 13.5 hours of driving – more than one driver's permitted daily driving time. That is why we plan with two drivers or an overnight stop on the way. More about our services for households can be found on the page Home move.
As Austria is a member state of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods – but there are registration obligations: in Graz you register within three days of moving in, using the registration form (Meldezettel). We quote the fixed price after a survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available for valuables. The route in detail is described on the page Moving Berlin – Graz. Call us on 01625978461 to arrange a survey.

What we take care of when you move to Graz
Two days on the road, one firm plan
We have no branch in Austria; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. For the roughly 895 km to Graz we decide in advance whether two drivers go straight through or the van stops overnight on the way, and we coordinate the arrival with your key handover. In Austria, lorries over 3.5 t pay a distance-based toll on motorways, which we include in the quote. We clarify access, floor and stopping space in Graz with you in advance. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and liability is under § 451e HGB.

Move affordably with a part load
For smaller moving volumes, a part load (Beiladung) to Graz can be cheaper: your household goods share the load space with other consignments on the same route heading south. This suits students or commuters with few belongings who have some flexibility on the delivery day.

Everything
for your move
This guide covers the questions that a move to Graz really raises: which route does the lorry take, why does the journey take two days, is there customs duty, when is the Meldezettel due and what applies to a car with German number plates? Then there are the cost factors, the toll for lorries over 3.5 t in Austria, the stopping space in front of the new flat and the timing from packing in Berlin to assembly in Graz. That way you are prepared for your long-distance move to Austria.

Common questions
Customs, Meldezettel and car: formalities for Graz
As Austria belongs to the European Union, there is no customs clearance and there are no import duties on your household goods when moving from Germany. What matters are the registration deadlines: in Austria you register within three days of moving into the flat with the Meldezettel, which the accommodation provider and tenant sign. In Germany you deregister if you no longer have a home in the country – at the earliest one week before and at the latest two weeks after moving out.
With your main residence in Austria, you may generally use a car with German number plates for only one month after bringing it into the country; after that it must be registered in Austria, and the Normverbrauchsabgabe (NoVA), a fuel-consumption-based tax, becomes due. So plan this step in right away. We organise packing and transport; you take care of the official errands yourself.
Route, duration and costs of your long-distance move to Graz
The cost of a move to Graz depends on the moving volume, floor, access and additional services such as packing or furniture assembly – and on the route: from Stromstraße it is around 895 km via the A9 to Hof, the A93 to Regensburg, the A3 to Passau and on in Austria via the Pyhrn motorway. Our guide prices by number of rooms and the price per kilometre are in the price list below; we quote the fixed price after the survey. Under Home move you will find our services for households.
The process begins with a free survey or video consultation. On the first day loading takes place in Berlin; the journey takes about 13.5 hours with breaks – which is why the van travels with two drivers or stops overnight on the way. On arrival day everything is unloaded and assembled in Graz. In Austria, lorries over 3.5 t pay a distance-based toll on motorways. Allow four to six weeks of lead time.

Graz: parking restriction and the roads office
In Graz, the roads office (Straßenamt) is responsible for traffic signs and traffic installations, specifically its traffic and permanent-use unit (Europaplatz 20, 8020 Graz). According to the city's description, an informal written application is sufficient, with documents on the situation if necessary; this is followed by an on-site inspection. The application itself is free of charge, but measures in the private interest incur costs, the amount of which the page does not specify. It does not state any deadlines either.
The page covers traffic signs in general and does not explicitly mention parking restrictions for removals (Übersiedlungen). So ask the roads office: telephone +43 316 872-3670, email [email protected]. According to the city, in-person visits are currently not possible; contact is by telephone or email.
In addition, the city offers an exemption permit for parking or stopping in no-stopping and no-parking zones under § 45 StVO. The application is made via an online form, and a copy of the vehicle registration certificate must be attached. The page does not state deadlines or amounts; the roads office provides information on +43 316 872-3602. So plan your enquiry early.
More about organising the loading point in Berlin can be found under Parking restriction zone. The basics of the formalities for a move to Austria are covered in our article Moving to Austria: customs, formalities and process.
Graz: Meldezettel and service centres
According to the city of Graz, you must register within three days of actually taking up residence. The deadline starts when you move in, not when you sign the tenancy agreement. Every person in the household needs their own Meldezettel, signed by the accommodation provider and the tenant. Registration is free of charge.
You need to bring originals or certified copies of an identity document showing name, date and place of birth, sex and citizenship – for example a driving licence together with proof of citizenship, or a passport together with a birth certificate. Non-Austrians present a travel document entitling them to enter Austria. Registration takes place at one of the city's service centres by appointment, booked online via etermin.net/stadtgraz or by telephone on +43 316 872-6666. Locations include Andritzer Reichsstraße 38, Bahnhofgürtel 85, Kärntner Straße 411 and Tummelplatz 9.
According to the city, registration via a representative or by post is also possible; however, original documents and a signed form are still required. According to the city, EU citizens can also register via the ID Austria app or EU Login. According to oesterreich.gv.at, however, online registration requires that you have already been registered in Austria before; for your first registration you therefore go to the service centre. Districts and everyday life are described in the guide Living in Graz.
