Long-distance move Berlin – Emmen (NL): route and deadlines

From Berlin to Emmen
Long-distance move to Emmen (NL) – route, Gemeente and BSN
Guide
This guide applies to Emmen in the Dutch province of Drenthe, not to Emmen in the canton of Lucerne. The municipality has around 107,000 inhabitants, about 56,000 of them in the town itself; it is known for Wildlands zoo and the megalithic tombs (hunebedden) in the surrounding area. Because the Netherlands is in the EU, your household goods need no customs papers. The Dutch deadlines are what matter: registering with the municipality (Gemeente) within five days, then the BSN and health insurance. We accompany you from deregistering in Berlin to assembly in Emmen.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 538 km on the A2 and A30, then on the A31 through the Emsland and the B402 to the border and on via the Dutch A37 to Emmen. By lorry that takes about eight hours including breaks. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including the return trip to Berlin. More on this: Formalities in the Netherlands.

Your
move, our craft
A long-distance move to Emmen involves more than boxes: registering with the Gemeente within five days, the BSN, health insurance and, if applicable, registering your car with the RDW. Also check the dimensions of your furniture, because Dutch stairwells are often narrow – large pieces then come in through the window by furniture lift. Within the EU you do not need customs papers. More on moves across the border can be found under International moving. We tell you which deadlines run after moving day and plan loading, the drive and assembly so that you can move in on arrival day.

Frequently asked questions about a long-distance move to Emmen (NL)
Customs & formalities when moving to the Netherlands
As the Netherlands and Germany are both EU members, customs duties and import taxes do not apply to most household goods. Even so, you need a complete inventory, especially for vehicles, valuables or goods used for business. For pets, an EU pet passport with a valid rabies vaccination is required, which we take into account in the planning.
Also important is registering with the Gemeente Emmen on time, within five days of arrival, in order to receive a BSN number. You need it for a bank account, health insurance and your employment contract. Write the deadlines down early so that no administrative steps are forgotten.

Registering in Emmen (Netherlands): booking by phone at the town hall
Anyone moving to Emmen in the Netherlands always needs an appointment to register. According to the Gemeente Emmen, you arrange it by phone, from abroad on +31 591 689 000. The municipality asks some preliminary questions and explains which documents you should bring. For the appointment you go in person to the town hall, Raadhuisplein 1, 7811 AP Emmen. Everyone moving with you must attend, including babies, young children and older people.
The municipality lists these documents, among others:
- a valid ID stating your nationality
- proof of accommodation, such as a tenancy agreement or proof of ownership
- your birth certificate if you were not born in the Netherlands
- proof of deregistration in your previous country of residence
Depending on your family, marriage or divorce certificates and your children's birth certificates may also be needed. Ask your previous registration authority to confirm your deregistration.
The municipality gives a deadline of five working days after arrival; the Dutch government (Rijksoverheid) speaks of five days. So book the appointment right after the move or even beforehand. Registration is free; you pay for translations and legalisations yourself. At the appointment you are entered in the BRP, and according to the municipality the BSN arrives by post within three weeks. According to the municipality, the town hall is open Monday to Wednesday and Friday from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., Thursday until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8.30 a.m. to 12.00 noon. The page was updated in September 2022, so please confirm the times.
Emmen after the move: parking permit and waste charge
For parking in Emmen, the Gemeente names two areas. According to the municipality, a parking permit (parkeervergunning) for the centre of Emmen costs 251.30 euros a year, and one for the Schil area 213 euros a year. You apply online via the municipality's portal. The information comes from a page on the Dutch government portal; check the amounts before applying, as they may change.
Another cost item is the waste charge (afvalstoffenheffing). According to the municipality, it consists of a fixed amount of 220 euros a year for households of any size and a variable part. The municipality states 7 euros per container emptying and 2 euros per rubbish bag. The municipality sends you a letter with the amount, payment method and deadline. If you pay late, you risk a fine. You can also have it checked whether you are entitled to partial remission (kwijtschelding). The page gives no information on bulky waste; ask the municipality on +31 591 689 000.
If you later move within the Netherlands, according to the municipality you report the move online with DigiD or in person after booking an appointment. This is free and is processed as quickly as possible.
The journey starts from our base in Berlin-Moabit.
