Moving to Austria

Your start in Austria: first the Meldezettel, then everyday life

Austria checklist

Unsere Firma Moving to Austria: packing, transport and assembly from Berlin, coordinated with the Meldezettel and vehicle registration deadlines.

If you emigrate to Austria, the transport is easy: both countries are in the EU, and furniture and boxes cross the border without customs papers. The deadlines at your destination, on the other hand, are tight – the Meldezettel (registration form) is due within three days of moving in, and your car must be registered in Austria after one month. With our private move service we pack, transport and assemble, so that you have this time free for the authorities. You can find all the details under private move.

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle moves to all of Austria – whether Vienna, Graz, Salzburg or Innsbruck. After a survey you receive a fixed price that lists packing, transport and furniture assembly. Plan your move-in day so that you have time for the registration office in the first three days. You can read how the route to the capital works under Moving Berlin – Vienna.

What we take on for your move to Austria

Transport from Berlin

When moving to Austria, we take on the part that takes strength and planning: packing, carrying, the journey and assembly in your new flat. We are liable for your belongings under the statutory rules of the HGB; it is best to take jewellery and important documents with you yourself, and additional insurance is available on request. We give you the fixed price after the survey, so that volume, floors and route are calculated realistically. You handle the paperwork such as the Meldezettel, registration certificate or NoVA yourself – we tell you in advance which deadlines run from the day you move in.

Packing Service

We pack crockery, books and electronics for the long journey to Austria and label every box by destination room.

Furniture assembly

Dismantling in Germany, assembly in your new flat in Austria – so that you can sleep in your own bed on the very first evening.

Piano transport

A piano travels with special straps and a dolly – even up the narrow stairs of a Viennese period building in Austria.

Furniture Transport

Individual pieces such as an heirloom wardrobe or a piano travel padded and secured to your new Austrian flat.
WELL PREPARED

How we support you

A move to Austria usually means a journey of several hundred kilometres. That is why we fix early on when loading takes place, when we arrive and who unlocks the door at the new address – so that after moving in there is time for the Meldezettel.

01

Reliable moving service

Loading and arrival dates are fixed in writing, so that you can arrange the flat handover in Austria with certainty.
02

Safe handling

Documents for the Meldezettel and registration certificate – passport, tenancy agreement, employment contract – travel with you, not in the lorry to Austria.
03

Clear communication

We clarify in advance whether a no-stopping and no-parking zone is needed in front of your new address in Austria and when it must be applied for.
04

Structured move planning

We plan backwards from the move-in day: cancellations, packing dates and the journey, so that the three-day deadline for the Meldezettel remains achievable.
05

Flexible support

If your job in Austria starts later, we store your furniture in the meantime – the registration deadline only starts when you actually move in.
06

Ready to move in

At the end the beds and wardrobes are standing, the boxes are in the right rooms – and you can take the signed Meldezettel to the office.
NATIONWIDE SERVICE

Part loads for small volumes

The budget-friendly alternative

For smaller loads, a shared load is the affordable alternative to your own lorry: your belongings travel towards Austria with other consignments. You need a little flexibility on the delivery day – ideal if you initially live in furnished accommodation or only a few pieces of furniture follow later.

EUROPE-WIDE MOVES

Your
move – fully organised

One team, every service

A move to Austria raises many questions: the Meldezettel, registration certificate, car registration with NoVA, health insurance via the ÖGK. As Austria is an EU member, there is no customs declaration at all for your household goods. This guide shows step by step which deadline starts when – usually on the day you move into your new flat. That way your move abroad succeeds without fines and without unnecessary trips.

Planning safe and relaxed

Plan your move-in so that there is time for the registration office in the three days afterwards and your landlord signs the Meldezettel – this applies to every private move, senior move or student move to Austria.

Furniture, boxes, transport routes

With a packing service and careful furniture transport, furniture gets through period-building stairwells in Vienna or along narrow access roads in Tyrolean villages without damage to furniture or walls.

Costs, timing and special cases

Whether Vienna, Graz or Innsbruck: the route has the biggest influence on the cost of your move to Austria; a shared load reduces it noticeably for small loads.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving to Austria

Answers about the Meldezettel, registration certificate, NoVA, ÖGK and costs.
No. As Austria and Germany are EU members, there is no customs declaration at all for household goods and furniture on a move from Germany – there are no checks on goods at the border. Your own inventory list is still useful, but for insurance and unpacking, not for customs. For your car, what counts is not customs but Austrian registration with NoVA.

No customs, but deadlines: the formalities in Austria

As Austria is a member of the European Union, there is no customs declaration for moves from Germany – furniture and household goods need no papers. What matters are the deadlines after moving in: within three days you register with the registration office or municipal authority (Magistrat) using the Meldezettel; your landlord (Unterkunftgeber) also signs the Meldezettel. If you stay for longer than three months, as an EU citizen you apply for a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) at the residence authority within four months of entry.

A car with German number plates may generally only be driven for one month from its arrival if your main residence is in Austria; before Austrian registration, the standard fuel consumption tax (NoVA) is payable at the tax office. Pets need the EU pet passport, a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. With this order, the bureaucratic part of your emigration to Austria goes smoothly without penalties.

Costs and process of your move to Austria

The cost of a move to Austria depends on the distance, moving volume and the service you want. After the survey we give you a fixed price in which packing, transport and assembly are listed individually. For smaller loads a shared load is recommended, which noticeably eases the strain on your wallet. A free advance survey helps us prepare a precise quote for your individual long-distance move.

The typical process includes an advisory meeting, a survey, packing, transport and finally assembly in your new Austrian flat. For a smooth move abroad, allow around three months' lead time – that is the notice period for tenants in Germany (§ 573c BGB). Our team coordinates all the steps centrally, so that you can concentrate on your fresh start. You can find more information about our offer under long-distance moves.
