Moving to Austria: price factors, route and schedule

Honestly calculated

Unsere Firma From Berlin to Vienna, Salzburg or Graz: volume, kilometres, tolls and parking space at the destination set the price.

A move to Austria is an international move within the EU: no customs duty applies to household goods, but the routes are long. From our base in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) it is around 684 km by road to Vienna, 731 km to Salzburg and 895 km to Graz. This means the price depends more heavily than for a local move on driving time, the driver's driving hours and tolls. If you plan early, you can neatly coordinate the date, the no-parking zone at the destination and the Meldezettel (registration form).

We state the fixed price after a survey on site or by video – whether you are going to Vienna, Salzburg, Graz or Innsbruck. It includes packing, transport and, on request, furniture assembly at your new home. Our Home move page shows which services a private household usually books. HOW WE PLAN

What we plan for in a move to Austria

Route, tolls, parking space

For a move to Austria we factor in the real driving time on the motorway, the statutory driving and rest times and the tolls in both countries: in Germany the lorry toll applies from 3.5 t, while in Austria light vehicles need the vignette and heavy ones the distance-based GO toll. We state the price as a fixed price after a survey. Our liability is under the German Commercial Code (HGB, § 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. For registration in Austria we give you a checklist.

Packing service

For the long route to Austria everything is packed break-proof – your documents for the Meldezettel stay in your hand luggage, not in the boxes from our packing service.

Tour planning

Vienna 684 km, Graz 895 km: we build driving times, breaks and the weekend driving ban for heavy lorries in Austria into the tour.

Senior moves

If you are moving to your children in Austria, you get a calm process with breaks, unpacking and help with the first trip to the registration office – our senior move.

Furniture transport

Single pieces of furniture or a whole household: we secure the load for the motorway and Alpine routes to Austria with our furniture transport.
PRICE FACTORS

What determines the price to Austria

The costs of a move to Austria are made up of volume, route, tolls, carrying distances and additional services. After the survey we state a fixed price for this.

01

Volume in cubic metres

The more cubic metres of household goods, the bigger the lorry. Sorting things out before the move to Austria lowers the price the most.
02

Kilometres and driving time

From Berlin it is 684 km to Vienna and 731 km to Salzburg. From around nine hours of driving time, the tour to Austria needs an overnight stop or a second driver team.
03

Tolls in two countries

German lorry toll from 3.5 t, in Austria the vignette or GO toll depending on weight – we include the tolls in the fixed price.
04

Floor and carrying distances

A Viennese older building on the fourth floor without a lift, or a house with a driveway: the floor and carrying distances at the destination in Austria determine the time required.
05

Parking space at the destination

Each city regulates no-parking zones itself – in Graz, for example, the road department (Straßenamt). An early enquiry saves long carrying distances on the move to Austria.
06

Extra services

You book packing, furniture assembly, kitchen dismantling or interim storage individually – so for your move to Austria you only pay for what you need.
SMALL LOADS

Part load to Austria

Share load space, cut costs
A part load to Austria saves money above all on long routes: the costs for the lorry, driver and tolls are shared between several customers. It suits students, single pieces of furniture or small households that have a few days of leeway on the delivery date. We agree the date in good time.

MOVING ABROAD

What
to plan besides the price

The question of a part load or a complete move also plays an important role in cost planning. Our long-distance moving experts are happy to advise you on all relevant details.

Plan the schedule backwards

Deregistering in Germany, moving day, the Meldezettel in Austria within three days: a checklist keeps your home move, senior move or student move in the right order.

Packing for the long route

With a packing service, careful furniture transport and a small transport for leftover items, your household goods arrive intact over several hundred kilometres to Austria.

Tolls, dates, special cases

For an office move, company relocation, public-authority move, part load or furniture taxi to Austria, tolls, weekend driving bans and fixed delivery windows all count.

FAQ

Questions about costs and planning

Price, driving time, Meldezettel and car when moving to Austria.
For a move to Austria you need your ID card or passport, the tenancy agreement and the Meldezettel, which the accommodation provider signs. A list of removal goods for customs is not required within the EU. If you stay longer than three months, apply for the registration certificate no later than four months after arrival. For the car, the registration certificate, Austrian insurance and proof of NoVA payment are added.

Formalities that determine the schedule

Austria is an EU member: no customs duty applies to your ordinary household goods on a move to Austria, and you do not need a list of removal goods for customs. More important for the schedule are the registration deadlines. You submit the Meldezettel within three days of moving in, signed by the accommodation provider (Unterkunftgeber). If you stay longer than three months, as an EU citizen you apply for a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) no later than four months after arrival – in Vienna at the MA 35. In Germany you deregister within two weeks of moving out (§ 17 (2) BMG).

Once you have established your main residence in Austria, you may only continue to drive a motor vehicle with German number plates for one month from bringing it into the country (§ 82 (8) KFG). For registration you need Austrian third-party liability insurance, the vehicle's data in the approval database and proof of payment of the NoVA (standard fuel consumption tax). Plan these steps before moving day.

Costs and process of your move to Austria

The costs of a move to Austria vary depending on the distance, the moving volume and additional services booked, such as a packing service or furniture assembly. With us you always receive a transparent fixed price that covers all agreed services and contains no hidden costs. For a 3-room flat you should expect costs of between 1,500 and 3,500 euros, depending on the exact distance.

The process starts with a free survey or remote assessment of your belongings, followed by a detailed quote. Once the order is confirmed, we take care of the complete organisation, including packing, transport and unloading in Austria. We start in Berlin-Moabit; the locations overview shows which destinations have their own page.

Price range by flat size

As a starting point for your budget, we give the base prices by flat size: 1 room from €359, 2 rooms from €609, 3 rooms from €909 and 4 rooms from €1,329. For houses and villas there is an individual quote. For a move to Austria, the route is added: we charge long-distance moves from €3.80/km. We state the exact price after a free survey.

What drives the price up for Austria

For a move to Austria, moving volume and distance (from €3.80/km) count the most, followed by floor, lift and tolls. The parking space at the destination, such as a parking restriction zone in front of an older building in Vienna or Graz, also has an effect. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load also change the total cost.

Services you can add for Austria

Whether it is a private move or a business relocation – we offer a comprehensive range of services around your move.

Cost factors by destination city in Austria: Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck

What a move from Berlin to Austria costs depends on the volume, the route from our depot in Berlin-Moabit and the situation at the destination. The destination cities differ mainly in access, floor and parking space. The calculation includes volume, carrying distances, floor, a furniture lift if needed, the toll costs for the route and the time required for loading and unloading.

  • Vienna: The districts and access routes are described in the Vienna guide.
  • Graz: We have a dedicated Graz guide on the route and costs.
  • Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck: There are dedicated guides for these cities too; the price factors are the same, but access differs.

The parking space for the removal van is regulated by each city. For Graz, the city names the road department (Straßenamt), Temporary Use team, which handles "temporary orders for removals" as the responsible office. Contact is currently only possible by phone (+43 316 872-3646) or email ([email protected]). The page does not state a lead time or the fee amount; ask about both early.

Lorry tolls and the driving bans for heavy lorries at weekends and on public holidays affect tour planning. We only state specific amounts in the binding quote, not in flat-rate prices. Customs and registration are described in the guide to customs and formalities.

Planning a move to Austria: Meldezettel, ORF fee, car

Plan your schedule up to moving day so that registration works straight after you move in. According to oesterreich.gv.at, you must submit the Meldezettel within three days of moving in. The site says "three days", not working days; to be on the safe side, count in calendar days. The responsible office is the municipal office (Gemeindeamt), in statutory cities the Magistrat, and in Vienna the Municipal District Office (Magistratisches Bezirksamt). Registration is free of charge. The accommodation provider (for example the landlord or main tenant) must sign the Meldezettel, and each person needs their own form. Breaches can be fined up to 726 euros.

Important for planning:

  • Documents: documents showing your name, date and place of birth and nationality, such as a passport or birth certificate.
  • Online: the Meldezettel can also be submitted via the registration portal on oesterreich.gv.at with ID Austria or EU Login.
  • ORF fee: according to ORF-Beitrags Service GmbH, it is charged per address as soon as at least one adult person is registered there with their main residence. No separate registration is needed for private addresses; the data comes from the Central Register of Residents.

For cars, according to the Federal Ministry of Finance, the NoVA is due when a vehicle is registered in Austria for the first time, including on import or relocation. An overview of all the steps is provided by the checklist for moving to Austria.

Always one step ahead.
