Moving to Austria: Process & Tips

From Berlin to Austria
Moving to Austria: route, GO toll and driving bans
To Vienna, Salzburg or Graz
A move to Austria is free of customs duty, because Austria, like Germany, belongs to the EU; planning therefore revolves mainly around the route. By road it is around 684 km from Berlin to Vienna via Dresden and Prague, around 731 km to Salzburg via the A9 and Munich, and around 751 km to Innsbruck. We accompany you from the survey to the key handover and coordinate packing, transport and reassembly. You can find more about our offer for a private move across the border here.
With our fixed price after a survey, you know in advance what costs to expect – tolls and an overnight stay for the team are included if the route requires them. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive to your new address, from Vienna via Salzburg to Innsbruck; places with their own pages can be found under Locations. On request we also take care of dismantling, assembly and packing delicate items. That way your move abroad becomes plannable.

What we clarify before the trip to Austria
Route, tolls, day of the week
Before a move abroad to Austria we clarify with you: which route does the lorry take, is one day of driving enough, and does the arrival fall within a weekend driving ban? After that you receive a fixed price that only changes if the scope changes. We are liable for your belongings under the HGB, limited to €620 per cubic metre; it is best to take valuables with you yourself, and additional insurance is available on request. You register with the registration form (Meldezettel) and re-register your car yourself after arrival – we tell you which documents belong in your hand luggage.

What we do for you
The value of your belongings plays a role in liability: under the HGB we are liable for €620 per cubic metre. An inventory list helps to estimate the volume for your long-distance move accurately and to consider additional insurance for expensive items.

Moving
& transport from a single source
A move to Austria has two sides: formalities and transport. The Meldezettel within three days, the registration certificate, the ÖGK and re-registering your car with NoVA are explained in our checklist for emigrating to Austria. This guide deals with the transport: which route the lorry takes, which tolls apply, why the day of the week matters and how long the journey takes. For families with children, registering at school and nursery comes on top.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Austria
Route, tolls and driving bans on the way to Austria
The shortest route from Berlin to Vienna goes via Dresden and Prague, around 684 km. It is around 592 km to Linz, around 731 km to Salzburg via the A9 and Munich, and around 895 km to Graz. Vehicles over 3.5 t pay the distance-based GO toll on Austrian motorways and expressways; anyone driving through the Czech Republic also pays a lorry toll there. In addition, heavy lorries in Austria are subject to a weekend driving ban from Saturday 3 pm to Sunday 10 pm.
Because a driver may drive for no more than 9 hours a day, we plan Vienna, Salzburg or Graz with an overnight stop or a second driver. You register with the Meldezettel within three days of moving in; it is best to get the landlord's signature on the form at the key handover. Further steps are explained in our emigration checklist.
Customs and costs when moving to Austria
As Austria is a member of the European Union, customs formalities and import duties on your private belongings do not apply at all when moving; there is no clearance at the border. This makes cross-border transport considerably simpler compared with a move to Switzerland. An inventory list is still worthwhile, because it makes the volume estimate more accurate and helps with checking after unloading.
The costs of a long-distance move to Austria depend on moving volume, distance, tolls and the additional services you want. After the survey you receive a fixed price in which these items are listed separately, with no hidden fees. That way you keep full control of your moving budget and can plan ideally.
Fair prices for every move
Whether a small 1-room flat or a large family home – our prices are fairly calculated. Prices start from €365 for 1 room, from €599 for 2 rooms, from €905 for 3 rooms and from €1,324 for 4 rooms. For houses and villas we prepare a suitable individual quote. If you are moving further away, a price from €3.85 per kilometre applies to the long-distance move. The easiest way to clarify all the details is at a free survey.
Assessing the moving price correctly
To estimate the price of the move correctly, we look at the volume, the distance (from €3.85/km), floor and lift, and any parking restriction zone that may be needed. Additional services such as furniture assembly and a shared load round off our offer.
