Long-distance move Berlin – Middelburg: Route Process & Schedule

From Berlin to Middelburg
Long-distance move to Middelburg – 806 km to the capital of Zeeland
Guide
A move to Middelburg takes you to the capital of the province of Zeeland on the Walcheren peninsula, north of Vlissingen. Because the Netherlands is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. More important are registration with the Gemeente (municipality), the temporary parking permit for moving day and the loading times in the city centre's pedestrian zone. What we take care of for private moves is listed under Private move.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 806 km via the A2, crossing into the Netherlands at Venlo, continuing via Eindhoven and Antwerp and finally along the A58. By lorry that is about 12 hours including breaks – more than one day's driving time, so we plan two to three days with an overnight stop or two drivers. We quote the fixed price after the survey. Your quote for Middelburg – after a survey
See first, then calculate
How much your move to Middelburg costs depends on volume, floor, access and the route of around 806 km. We look at your household goods – at your home in Berlin or by video – and then quote a written fixed price, whether the destination is in the old town or in Arnemuiden.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

Our part in your move to Middelburg
From Moabit to Middelburg
We have no branch in Middelburg; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a flat in the old town or a house in Arnemuiden. For parking on moving day, Middelburg offers a temporary verhuisvergunning (moving permit), which is applied for via the digital Parkeerloket (parking counter) after you have reported your move; fixed loading times apply in the pedestrian zone. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB with €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Your
move – fully organised
A long-distance move to Middelburg has its own steps: deregistration in Berlin, reporting the move and registering with the Gemeente within five days, the verhuisvergunning for parking, loading times in the Kernwinkelgebied and the lorry toll in the Netherlands. On top of that comes a route of around 806 km through three countries. This guide puts the steps in order – more about the city can be found in the Middelburg guide.

Common questions
No customs, but registration and BSN: formalities in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is an EU member, so your belongings do not have to be declared at customs. What matters are the registration obligations: in Berlin you deregister if you are not moving into a new home in Germany – within two weeks of moving out (§ 17 (2) BMG). Anyone staying longer than four months has themselves entered in the BRP (Personal Records Database) within five days of arrival, according to Rijksoverheid (the Dutch government); this is free of charge.
In Middelburg you register in person with the Gemeente, and all family members come along. The citizen service number (BSN) then arrives by post. Your EU driving licence remains valid; a car that is used permanently in the Netherlands must be re-registered there – the rules are set out by the RDW and the Belastingdienst (tax authority).
Route, toll and arrival on Walcheren
The route runs via the A2 into the Ruhr area, into the Netherlands at Venlo, via Eindhoven into Belgium, around Antwerp and back into the Netherlands, finally along the A58 to Middelburg. With around 806 km and about 12 hours of driving time including breaks, we plan two to three days including loading and unloading. In Flanders, Viapass charges a kilometre levy for lorries over 3.5 tonnes, and in the Netherlands the vrachtwagenheffing (lorry charge) applies.
In the 17th century, with around 30,000 inhabitants, Middelburg was the fifth-largest city of the Dutch Republic; its landmark is the Lange Jan tower of the Abbey of Our Lady, which today houses the provincial government. There, the Kernwinkelgebied is a pedestrian zone – loading and unloading is allowed Monday to Saturday from 6 to 11 am. Which vehicle is suitable is decided during the survey.
Fair prices for your move
Our fair prices start at €339 for 1-room flats, €579 for 2-room flats, €909 for 3-room flats and €1,289 for 4-room flats. Houses and villas are quoted individually. For longer routes, a price of €3.95/km applies to long-distance moves. Arrange a free survey today.
Calculating moving costs: what matters
For the calculation, volume and distance (from €3.95/km) count first and foremost. Then come the floor, the lift and, if necessary, a parking restriction zone. If you also need furniture assembly or a part load, you should say so early on.

Middelburg: verhuisvergunning and access to the Kernwinkelgebied
For parking on moving day, the Gemeente Middelburg offers a tijdelijke verhuisvergunning (temporary moving permit). It applies to residents who are moving; the move must first be reported to the municipality. It is applied for via the digital Parkeerloket (parkeren.middelburg.nl), with the confirmation of the reported move attached. According to the municipality, the application can be made no earlier than 4 weeks before the final moving date. The permit costs 8.70 euros, is valid for 4 weeks and can only be issued once; there is no extension. After that, you apply for a bewonersvergunning (resident's permit) and pay the remaining amount for the current permit year.
If someone moves into the Kernwinkelgebied (pedestrian zone), a second rule applies. According to the municipality, loading and unloading is allowed there Monday to Saturday between 6.00 and 11.00 am. Anyone who has to drive in with a motor vehicle outside these times needs an exemption (ontheffing). The municipality mentions, among others, a time-limited version for cases in which access is demonstrably necessary. According to the municipality, all exemptions are free of charge and are applied for via the digital Parkeerloket; applications by email are not processed. The page does not give a separate rule for removal vans, so discuss your plans with the municipality in advance (tel. +31 118 67 50 00).
More on the route can be found in the Middelburg moving guide.
Middelburg: registration, grofvuil and the lorry charge
After arrival you register in person with the Gemeente Middelburg. According to the Dutch government website, you make the appointment on +31 118 67 50 00 or via middelburg.nl. All family members who are to be registered come along. Registration is free of charge, you receive a confirmation letter, and the BSN arrives by post within three weeks. As the page was last updated in November 2022, confirm the details at your appointment.
According to the municipality, you can take old furniture to a Milieustraat (recycling centre) free of charge; the ZRD runs 13 of them in Zeeland. Alternatively, grofvuil (bulky waste) is collected from your home on Thursdays for a fee of 53.50 euros per m³ (as of 2026). It must be ready in bundles of up to 25 kg. The appointment is made online at the e-Loket or by telephone, and payment is made via the online checkout by credit card or iDEAL. Items not collected include chemicals, building rubble, window glass and car tyres, as well as pianos or other heavy items that cannot be taken apart into pieces of up to 1.5 m.
On the journey, the Dutch vrachtwagenheffing (lorry charge) also applies: according to vrachtwagenheffing.nl, it affects domestic and foreign vehicles with a technically permissible maximum mass of more than 3,500 kg. See also Living in Middelburg and Long-distance move to Rotterdam.
