New on Walcheren: How to Settle In to Middelburg

The first few weeks

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and brings your household goods to Middelburg – this guide explains the dealings with the authorities.

Middelburg is the capital of the province of Zeeland and lies on the Walcheren peninsula, north of Vlissingen. Its landmark is the 85 m Lange Jan tower; the buildings of the medieval abbey now house the provincial government and the Zeeuws Museum. The municipality also includes Arnemuiden, Kleverskerke, Sint Laurens and Nieuw- en Sint Joosland. This guide sorts out your first weeks: registration, BSN, flat-hunting and parking. We handle the transport as a home removal.

We have no branch in the Netherlands: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and carry out moves to Middelburg and back. Within the EU your household goods need no customs declaration. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), with additional insurance on request. The route and schedule are described in our long-distance moving guide for Middelburg; for moving day, the municipality issues a dedicated moving permit (verhuisvergunning) for the vehicle.

Your belongings are covered under the HGB.

Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

Before Moving Day in Middelburg

Moving permit, stairs, date

We come from Berlin and bring your household goods to Middelburg. Before moving day we clarify with you the municipality's moving permit for the vehicle, whether the new address is in the kernwinkelgebied (core shopping area) and needs an exemption for driving in, and how narrow the stairs and doors are in the listed houses of the Binnenstad. We set the price after the survey (fixed price), and your belongings are covered under the HGB. You take care of the registration yourself by appointment – book it early, because the day of the appointment counts as the registration date.

Packing Service

We pack your household goods and label every box by room – in Middelburg everything then goes straight into the right room of the new flat.

Office Move

For offices and practices moving to Middelburg, we plan the move outside opening hours so that work at the new address resumes quickly – with our office move.

Student moves

For a room near University College Roosevelt or the HZ University of Applied Sciences, a shared load is often enough – with a student move you only pay for what comes along.

Furniture Transport

Wardrobes, sofa and fragile items are padded and secured; we look at the narrow stairs of the old buildings in the Binnenstad beforehand – with our furniture transport.

Middelburg

Authorities, housing, everyday life

When you are new in Middelburg, many questions arise at once: how quickly must I register, and which documents do I need? When do I get my BSN, and which health insurance applies? How do I apply for the moving permit for the removal van and later a parking permit? Which of the eleven residential areas and villages suits me? We have summarised the information from the Gemeente Middelburg below. For the move itself we advise you on timing, access and packing, so that everything is right on moving-in day.

Paperwork in the first few days

Registration appointment within five days, BSN, basic health insurance, moving permit: if you plan this before moving in, you settle in quickly. For a home removal, senior move or student move to Middelburg, we schedule the moving-in day to match.

Moving into a period building or a new build

With our packing service, careful furniture transport and a suitable small transport, moving in works in a listed house in the Binnenstad just as well as in Mortiere on the edge of Middelburg.

Companies, practices and special cases

For an office move, company relocation, public authority move, shared load or furniture taxi to Middelburg, we agree time windows and the moving permit so that your business or your new daily life can quickly carry on.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Middelburg

Registration, housing and everyday life in Middelburg.
Many appreciate the historic Binnenstad with the Lange Jan and the abbey, the manageable size and the location on Walcheren near the coast. As the capital of Zeeland, Middelburg offers administration, a university college and a university of applied sciences. In addition there are short distances by bike and a peaceful townscape – for families as well as commuters. We do not give general rent figures because they vary greatly depending on the neighbourhood.

Eleven Residential Areas and Villages: Where to Live in Middelburg?

The Gemeente Middelburg lists eleven residential areas and villages, including the Binnenstad, Mortiere, Dauwendaele, Griffioen, Klarenbeek-Veersepoort, ’t Zand-Stromenwijk-Rittenburg, Arnemuiden and Nieuw- en Sint Joosland. The Binnenstad is the historic centre with monuments on the water, the Lange Jan and the abbey; Mortiere on the southern edge of town is a newer, spacious neighbourhood with large plots.

We deliberately do not give reliable rent figures – compare offers, make sure the deposit is no more than two months' rent, and check the parking zone and route to the station before you sign.

Studying, Working and Commuting in Middelburg

As the capital of Zeeland, Middelburg is the seat of the provincial government. Since 2004 there has been University College Roosevelt, founded by Utrecht University and the smallest university in the Netherlands, plus the HZ University of Applied Sciences. Further jobs are offered by administration, retail, healthcare and tourism on Walcheren.

Middelburg has had a rail connection since 1878; the city is connected to the motorway network via the A58 (E312), and the N57 leads towards the Europoort. Since 1815 a canal has connected the city with Veere. We set the moving date to match the handover of your flat.

Living in Middelburg: Binnenstad, Mortiere and Parking

The municipality of Middelburg lists eleven residential areas and villages, including the Binnenstad, Mortiere, Dauwendaele, Griffioen, Klarenbeek-Veersepoort, 't Zand-Stromenwijk-Rittenburg, Arnemuiden and Nieuw- en Sint Joosland. According to the municipality, the Binnenstad is the historic centre with monuments on the water and streets from the 17th century; schools and shops are close by, the green Veste runs along the edge, and there are flats to rent and to buy.

Mortiere, by contrast, is a newer, spacious neighbourhood on the southern edge of town: inspired by the architecture of the 1930s, with very large plots and a golf course all around. The first owner-occupied houses were completed in 2005. If you compare both locations, check not only the rent but also the parking zone and journey times to the station.

  • Resident parking: if you live in paid parking zone 1 or 2, according to the municipality (as of 2026) you can apply online for a digital permit via parkeren.middelburg.nl. The first costs €104.40 per year, the second €345.60.

  • Kernwinkelgebied: if you move in there, you also need a free exemption for driving in.

For the region, it is worth looking at Living in Vlissingen; costs and districts are explained in the Middelburg guide.

Always one step ahead.
