Middelburg guide
Moving to Middelburg: abbey, ramparts and Walcheren
Guide
A move to Middelburg takes you to the capital of the Dutch province of Zeeland, on the Walcheren peninsula north of Vlissingen. Its landmark is the Lange Jan tower of the Abbey of Our Lady, founded around 1125, which today houses the provincial government and the Zeeuws Museum. The city centre is a pedestrian zone with fixed loading times – so we clarify access, parking permit and carrying distances before moving day.
Whether it is an older building in the city centre or a house in Arnemuiden: we come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 806 km via Venlo and Antwerp. Within the EU there are no customs formalities for household goods. We quote the fixed price after the survey; details on long routes can be found under Long-distance moves, further destinations under Locations.

Survey, fixed price, fixed date
We calculate your move to Middelburg by moving volume, floor, access and the around 806 km from Berlin – not by hourly rate. After the survey or a video appointment we quote you a fixed price, which is put in writing – whether your new address is in the city centre or in Arnemuiden.

What we take care of when you move to Middelburg
Planning from Berlin, arrival in Middelburg
We have no branch in Middelburg; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a flat in the city centre or a house in Arnemuiden. For parking on moving day, Middelburg offers a temporary verhuisvergunning (moving permit) for 8.70 euros; anyone wanting to close off parking spaces or the street contacts the Gemeente (municipality) at least two weeks in advance. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB with €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Part load: move affordably
For smaller moving volumes or single items, a part load to Middelburg can be cheaper: your belongings share the loading space with other consignments on the same route. In return you need some flexibility on the delivery day – practical if only a few items are following or a room in a shared flat is moving.

Moving
service without compromise
A move to Middelburg raises its own questions: when may the lorry enter the pedestrian zone, how do you get the verhuisvergunning, when does a closure have to be applied for and how does registration with the Gemeente work? This guide introduces the city centre around the abbey and the places in the municipality – Arnemuiden, Kleverskerke, Sint Laurens and Nieuw- en Sint Joosland – and explains costs and the route from Berlin.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Middelburg
The city centre and places in the municipality of Middelburg
Besides the city itself, the municipality of Middelburg includes the places of Arnemuiden, Kleverskerke, Sint Laurens and Nieuw- en Sint Joosland. The city centre grew up around a refuge fort from the late 9th century; from 1579 to 1585 it was given new ramparts with bastions, and the Arne watercourse served as the town moat. At its core lies the Kernwinkelgebied, a pedestrian zone with fixed access times.
Arnemuiden, whose name means "mouth of the Arne", was a fishing village in the late Middle Ages. For the move, the specific address counts: in the city centre, loading times and narrow lanes apply; in the villages, it is more about access and carrying distances. Our private move service adapts accordingly.
A provincial capital with history: living in Middelburg
Middelburg is the seat of the provincial government of Zeeland, housed in the buildings of the Abbey of Our Lady together with the Koorkerk, the Nieuwe Kerk and the Zeeuws Museum. In the 17th century, with around 30,000 inhabitants, the city was the fifth-largest in the Dutch Republic. Vlissingen lies to the south on the same peninsula. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
After moving in, you have yourself registered with the Gemeente if you are staying longer than four months – according to Rijksoverheid (the Dutch government) within five days, free of charge, with the issue of a citizen service number (BSN). So plan the move notification, verhuisvergunning and registration appointment before the move.

Middelburg: access to the Kernwinkelgebied and closing off parking spaces
As the Kernwinkelgebied, Middelburg's city centre is a pedestrian area. According to the municipality of Middelburg, vehicles may only enter there Monday to Saturday between 6 and 11 am (venstertijden, time windows). Anyone wanting to enter outside these times needs an ontheffing (exemption). It is free of charge, is applied for in advance via the digital parking counter (log-in with DigiD, companies with eHerkenning) and cannot be issued retroactively. Cameras read number plates; without a permit, a fine from the CJIB may follow.
In the municipality's policy, "moving" is not explicitly one of the categories. However, a temporary ontheffing is provided for anyone who can show that access is necessary, for one number plate per day in each case. Whether it suits your removal van is decided by the municipality case by case.
If you want to close off a parking space or the street temporarily for the move, according to the municipality you contact the Gemeente Middelburg, Kanaalweg 3, at least two weeks in advance, on 0118 67 50 00 or at [email protected] (Team Verkeer). The application contains your contact details, the dates and a description of the measures including a drawing. The applicant arranges the traffic measures themselves; the move may only begin after written permission.
For the route from Berlin, read our long-distance moving guide for Middelburg; general tips on the parking space are given in the guide to the parking restriction zone.
Middelburg: verhuisvergunning and registration after moving in
Anyone moving to Middelburg can apply to the municipality for a temporary verhuisvergunning for parking. It costs 8.70 euros, is valid for four weeks and can only be obtained once. You can apply for it up to four weeks before the final moving date via the digital parking counter (parkeren.middelburg.nl); you must upload the confirmation of your verhuisaangifte (notification of move). After that, you can apply for a bewonersvergunning (resident's permit). An extension or a new application is not possible, so the start should match the actual moving date. If you move into the Kernwinkelgebied, you also need the ontheffing described above.
Registration with the municipality is also subject to a deadline. According to Rijksoverheid, if you are staying for more than four months you must have yourself entered in the BRP (Personal Records Database) within 5 days of arrival. This is free of charge. Accompanying partners and children must come to the town hall too. After registration you receive a citizen service number (BSN), if you do not already have one.
- Plan the verhuisaangifte and the appointment with the municipality before the move
- Keep the ID documents of all family members to hand
- Set the moving date so that the ontheffing and parking permit are already in place
Fees and deadlines can change, so check the municipality's details again shortly before the move. An overview of the official steps can be found in our guide to living in Middelburg.
