Long-distance move Berlin – Kortrijk: route process & deadlines

From Berlin to West Flanders
Long-distance move to Kortrijk: route, parking and registration
Guide
A long-distance move to Kortrijk is long, but not a customs matter: Belgium is part of the EU, and your household goods cross the border without customs papers. What needs planning is the route of around 824 km with driving times, the Belgian kilometre charge Viapass for lorries over 3.5 t, the permit for parking spaces in front of the building and, after arrival, registration with the city within 8 days. Kortrijk lies in West Flanders near the French border; the official language is Dutch. For your private move we take care of packing, transport and assembly.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 824 km via the A2 into the Ruhr area, into the Netherlands at Venlo, past Eindhoven to Antwerp and via the E17 to Kortrijk. By lorry that is about 12.5 hours including breaks – more than one day's driving time, so with two drivers or an overnight stop. We quote the fixed price after a survey. What else matters for cross-border moves is explained under International move.

Not much to move? Part load!
For smaller volumes or single items, a part load (Beiladung) to Kortrijk can be cheaper: your belongings share the load space with other consignments on the route via the Ruhr area, Eindhoven and Antwerp. In return, a time window applies instead of a fixed date; we clarify whether a trip fits when you enquire.

From
planning to assembly
A move to Belgium involves a number of topics: the long route with driving times and the Viapass charge, the permit for parking spaces in front of the building, registration with the city followed by a residence check by the neighbourhood officer (wijkinspecteur), health insurance and the car. This guide shows what you do yourself and what we take care of. There are no customs formalities within the EU. If the new flat is not yet available, we store your belongings in Berlin in the meantime and deliver on the agreed date.

Kortrijk: parking spaces for the removal van and inname openbaar domein
If the removal van in Kortrijk occupies the street, pavement or parking spaces, according to the City of Kortrijk a permit for the use of public space (“inname openbaar domein”) is required. kortrijk.be states that removal vans are included and that at least 2 parking spaces must be applied for.
- Who applies: the person carrying out the work, so as a rule the removal company.
- Deadline: at least 3 working days before the start, at least 10 working days if pedestrians, cyclists or traffic are obstructed; in that case a signage permit is also required.
- Costs: per day and unit (10 m² or one parking space): 25 euros in the centre in zones KOR1 and KOR3, 10 euros in KOR2, KOR4, the blue zone and on the street, pavement or unpaid parking spaces.
- Application: online via iod.kortrijk.be or by appointment at the city hall.
According to the city, Sundays and public holidays are free of charge, except in KOR3 and KOR4. Every space applied for is charged, even if it is only used briefly. The parking signs are available free of charge by appointment at Depot 102 (while stocks last); they must be in place at least 24 hours before the start. Afterwards, take a photo of the zone with legible number plates and upload it in the application.
The Minder Hinder team answers questions on 056 27 83 63. The German version is explained in our guide to the parking restriction zone; districts and costs can be found under Moving to Kortrijk.
Kortrijk: registration within 8 days and the Viapass kilometre charge
After moving in, you register your new residence with the City of Kortrijk. According to kortrijk.be, the deadline is 8 days after moving into the property; registration is free of charge. For nationals of other countries, the city describes two routes:
- If you are already registered in Belgium, you report the change of address online via the Thuisloket.
- If you are not yet registered, book an appointment via the city's online system.
A neighbourhood officer (wijkinspecteur) then checks whether you really live at the address. You should bring your residence card, passport or identity card. An adult member of the household can report the change for the whole family. The Burgerzaken (civil affairs) office is at Leiestraat 21 (telephone 1777).
The route also involves a Belgian peculiarity: Viapass levies a kilometre charge on goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, whether empty or loaded and whether they carry commercial or private goods. This also applies to removal lorries. The transport company takes care of it; what matters for you is that the price planning includes this item. General information on customs and paperwork is summarised in Moving to Belgium: customs, formalities and process, and everyday life on site is described in Living in Kortrijk.
