Moving to Kortrijk: Grote Markt, the Leie and sub-municipalities
Living in West Flanders
Kortrijk lies in the province of West Flanders on the Leie, close to the French border, and is part of the cross-border Eurometropolis Kortrijk-Lille. The official language is Dutch. In addition to the city centre, the city includes the sub-municipalities of Aalbeke, Bellegem, Bissegem, Heule, Kooigem, Marke and Rollegem. The A17 and the A14 meet at the Aalbeke motorway junction, and the R8 ring road runs around the city. For your private move we clarify in advance where the lorry is allowed to park.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 824 km via Eindhoven and Antwerp to Kortrijk, about 12.5 hours by lorry including breaks – so with two drivers or an overnight stop. Within the EU there is no customs duty on your household goods. For parking spaces in front of the building, the removal van needs a permit from the city. After moving in, you register within 8 days. We quote the fixed price after a survey. More on the route in the long-distance move guide for Kortrijk.

What we take care of when you move to Kortrijk
From Berlin to the Leie
We do not have a branch in Belgium but come with the lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we apply to the city in good time for the permit for the parking spaces in front of your building and collect the signs – according to the city, the permit is applied for by the person carrying out the work. We pack, carry, transport and assemble; you take care of registration yourself. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible.

This guide shows which sub-municipalities belong to Kortrijk, how to apply for parking spaces for the removal van, how registration with a residence check works and which charge lorries pay in Belgium. The information comes from the City of Kortrijk and from Viapass. We do not quote rents because they depend heavily on location and condition. Frequently asked questions about moving to Kortrijk
Kortrijk's city centre and sub-municipalities
Kortrijk's city centre lies on the Leie around the Grote Markt; the Buda island lies in the Leie. Around the centre lie the sub-municipalities of Heule, Bissegem, Marke, Aalbeke, Rollegem, Bellegem and Kooigem; the city borders France. A motorway-style ring road encircles the city. For the move, the locations differ mainly in terms of access and parking: in the centre, higher parking fees and narrow streets apply, while the sub-municipalities more often have houses with their own driveway. Which location suits you depends on your commute, schools and budget. If the new flat is not yet available, we store your belongings in Berlin in the meantime and deliver on the agreed date. We answer frequently asked questions briefly and concretely further down. We plan the return route to Berlin in the same way.
Work, study and everyday life in Kortrijk
Kortrijk is an industrial and trading city with a university campus, several colleges, museums and stages, as well as a transport hub between Belgium and France. We do not quote specific rents because they depend heavily on location and condition; compare current listings on Belgian portals. If you start looking early and are flexible about location, you will find a flat more easily. Lille lies on the French side of the Eurometropolis, and Ghent and Bruges can be reached via the motorways. Notice in Berlin, a parking permit with at least three working days' lead time and registration within 8 days are best planned backwards from moving-in day. If the flat is not yet available, we store your furniture in Berlin in the meantime. We list additional services such as assembly, packing or storage individually. We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); the route is already included in the fixed price. Dates at the end of the month are in demand, so an early enquiry pays off. According to the city, a removal van on public land in Kortrijk requires a permit for the use of public space (toelating inname openbaar domein). You apply for it digitally via iod.kortrijk.be or by appointment at the city hall. The application must be received at least 3 working days in advance, or at least 10 working days if pedestrians, cyclists or car traffic are obstructed.

According to the city's tariff overview, costs are charged per day and unit (one parking space or 10 m²): 25 euros for paid parking spaces in the centre in zones KOR1 and KOR3, 10 euros in KOR2 and KOR4 and on the carriageway, pavement or in the blue zone, and 25 euros in the pedestrian zone. For a removal van you pay for at least two parking spaces, even if you only use them briefly. We check the tariffs before your appointment, because the page may be out of date.
More on the route can be found in the long-distance move guide for Kortrijk and under Parking restriction zone.
During the survey we clarify with you how wide the access is, how far it is from the van to the front door and whether a furniture lift will be needed. With this information you can set the number of parking spaces needed and the duration of use realistically in the application.
Registering in Kortrijk and the kilometre charge for lorries in Belgium
If you move into Kortrijk, according to the city you register with the city administration within 8 days of moving in. Registration is free of charge. According to the city, anyone who has never been registered in Belgium cannot submit the change of address and books an appointment at the city hall instead. The neighbourhood police officer then visits for a residence check (woonstcontrole). Once the change of address is complete, you receive an email to update the address on your electronic foreigner's card. You can reach Burgerzaken (civil affairs) on 1777.
For the journey: according to Viapass, Belgium levies a kilometre charge on goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, on the roads of the Flemish Region, the Brussels-Capital Region and the roads in Wallonia managed by SOFICO. Kortrijk is in Flanders. We check before departure whether and how our vehicle is affected.
For everyday life, read our guide Living in Kortrijk, and for planning the guide Long-distance move to Belgium.
Plan the registration appointment straight after moving in and have your ID or residence card ready. We coordinate our arrival with your key handover so that you are on site when the van pulls up, and loading in Berlin-Moabit runs without waiting time.
