Moving to Jena: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Jena
Moving to Jena: the Saale, Zeiss and the university
Guide
A move to Jena takes you to Thuringia's second-largest city, on the Saale between shell limestone slopes. Jena is a university city: the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität was founded in 1558 and is the largest in Thuringia, and there is also the Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule. Since the 19th century the city has been a centre of optics around Carl Zeiss. Residential areas range from period buildings in Jena-West and Jena-Nord to the prefabricated blocks in Lobeda and Winzerla. For your private move we clarify access and floor in advance.
The route: around 259 km from Moabit (Stromstraße 21), first south on the A9 to the Hermsdorfer Kreuz interchange, then west on the A4 into the Saale valley. Including the mandatory driving break, the lorry needs about 3.5 hours – so loading in Berlin and unloading in Jena usually fit into one day. If you are moving from Jena back to the Spree, you get the same planning in the opposite direction. After moving in, you have two weeks to register under § 17 BMG; the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) comes from your landlord. More about the journey: Moving Berlin – Jena.

From the Spree to the Saale: what we do
From Moabit into the Saale valley
We have no base in Jena itself – the lorry starts in Berlin-Moabit. Because the city lies tightly in the Saale valley between shell limestone and red sandstone slopes, we clarify beforehand how close the vehicle can get to the front door: often tight in the period-building streets of Jena-West and Jena-Nord, usually wider at the blocks of flats in Lobeda and Winzerla, but with more floors. The Traffic Organisation Team (Team Verkehrsorganisation) is responsible for the parking space, and Kommunalservice brings the signs. We set the price after the survey; liability is under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. More about the private move.

Move affordably with a part load
Only a sofa, a desk or a few boxes for a room in a shared flat in Jena? Then a part load is often enough: your things travel together with other jobs towards Thuringia, and you only pay for your share of the loading space. In return, the delivery day is less fixed – allow a few days' leeway.

Everything
for your move
Anyone moving to Jena faces similar questions: a period flat in the Saale valley or a high-rise in Lobeda, when the parking restriction application must reach the Traffic Organisation Team and how to get an appointment at the citizens' service. The sections below place the localities between Jena-Zentrum, Wenigenjena and Winzerla in context, sum up the city's requirements and show how the around 259 km from Berlin fit into moving day. Finally, we cover costs, part loads and liability.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Jena
30 localities between the Saale and the shell limestone
Under the Thuringian Local Government Code, Jena is divided into 30 localities (Ortsteile); many of them were formerly separate villages and have an elected local council. For statistical purposes there are 41 districts, including Jena-Zentrum, Jena-Nord, Jena-Süd, Jena-West, Wenigenjena, Winzerla, Lobeda-West and Lobeda-Ost, Göschwitz or Burgau.
The city centre and the adjoining neighbourhoods in the Saale valley are densely built up, with period buildings without lifts and scarce parking spaces. Lobeda and Winzerla have large blocks of flats, while the former villages on the outskirts tend to have detached houses. For the move, the specific address therefore matters: we clarify floor, stairwell and space for the lorry during the survey. Our private move service adapts to this.
University, optics and the JenTower
Jena is the only city in Thuringia with a full university: in the 2022/23 winter semester, around 21,300 people were studying at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität and the Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule. After 1990 Jena changed from an industrial centre into a centre of education and science, with numerous research institutes; optics around Carl Zeiss still shapes the city today. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
The JenTower rises above the city centre, and the Paradiespark and Volkspark Oberaue lie on the Saale. If you are arriving at the start of the semester, you should set the moving day early: according to the city, the parking restriction should be applied for a week in advance, and the signs must be in place four working days beforehand. Long routes from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.

Applying for a parking restriction for your move in Jena
In Jena, the Traffic Organisation Team (Team Verkehrsorganisation, Am Anger 26, 07743 Jena) accepts applications for a parking restriction for a move. According to the city of Jena, you submit it informally by post, e-mail or fax using the form from the download area. You must state your name and address, the location (street and house number) and the period. The application should arrive at least one week before the moving date. The signs are put up by Kommunalservice Jena; they must be in place at least four working days before taking effect. A precondition is a free parking space for the removal vehicle.
The city lists these fee items for parking restrictions for moves: parking restriction for up to three days €15.00, one sign location €142.80, two sign locations €238.00. Official traffic signs may only be put up if the road traffic authority has approved them.
You can reach the Traffic Organisation Team at [email protected] or 0049 3641 49-5101. According to the city, opening hours are Mondays and Tuesdays 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, closed on Wednesdays, Thursdays 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and Fridays 8:00 am to 12:00 noon; outside these hours an appointment can be arranged. It is better to apply for one day too many than too few. On request we coordinate your parking restriction zone with the loading time of your move.
Registering your flat in Jena: citizens' service at Engelplatz
After moving in, you register your flat in Jena within two weeks, according to the city. The Citizens' Service Team (Team Bürgerservice), Engelplatz 1, 07743 Jena, is responsible. For registering in person you need an appointment, which you arrange online or by telephone (0049 3641 49-3800, [email protected]). The city gives the opening hours as Monday 8:30 am to 1:00 pm, Tuesday 8:30 am to 6:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, Thursday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm and Friday 8:30 am to 1:00 pm; in addition, the office opens on selected Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (according to the city, for September to December 2026).
You must bring a valid ID card or passport and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); owners instead present proof of ownership, for example an extract from the land register. If your ID card is invalid, you also need your last registration certificate.
Registering a main residence is also possible online. For this you need the online ID function of your identity card or eID card and an NFC-enabled device. Secondary residences can be registered online without this function. If you are bringing your car, you will find the service “Fahrzeuge nach Jena ummelden” (re-registering vehicles to Jena) in the service portal. Further tips about the city are in the guide to living in Jena; our overview can be found on the Jena location page.
