Team from Berlin-Moabit

Moving between the Jenzig and the Kernberge

Arrival by lorry from Berlin

Unsere Firma travels from Berlin-Moabit for moves in Jena – around 259 road kilometres, so we plan the date and parking restriction with lead time.
Our company is based at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit; we have no branch in Jena. For a private move, office move or furniture transport, the team comes with the lorry via the A9 and A4 – whether the flat is in the city centre, in Wenigenjena or in a high-rise in Lobeda.
After a survey by video or by arrangement, you receive a fixed price for Jena. You book a packing service, small transport or part load only if you need it. Important for planning: in Jena, the municipal service (Kommunalservice) puts up the parking restriction signs, and the application should be submitted a week in advance.

Parking restriction, halls of residence, registration: questions about moving in Jena

Important answers for your move in Jena

Here you will find answers on parking restrictions, costs, halls of residence and registration for your move in Jena – with the city's deadlines and the route from Berlin.

Above all, narrow parts of the old town around the Markt, Holzmarkt and Johannisstraße, as well as parts of Jena-Nord and Wenigenjena, often require a parking restriction zone so that our removal van can park close to the front door.

Saale valley, hillsides, universities: what shapes a move in Jena

A move in Jena has some particular features that result from the city's location in the middle Saale valley and its role as a university and science location. With around 109,000 inhabitants, Jena is the second-largest city in Thuringia after Erfurt; around 21,000 students study at the Friedrich Schiller University and the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences combined, and companies such as Carl Zeiss and Schott have shaped the city since the 19th century. Praktik Transport und Umzüge is not based in Jena but at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit; for your move, the team travels with the lorry.

From our base to Jena it is around 259 road kilometres, most of it via the A9 and the last stretch on the A4. Within the city area, the A4 has the junctions Jena-Göschwitz and Jena-Zentrum, and the B7 and B88 also run through the city. Because the journey takes several hours, we fix loading time and parking restriction with lead time.

Around the market square, the Eichplatz by the JenTower and the lanes of the old town, there is little space for large removal vans. Added to this are hillside locations on the hills around the valley, such as the Jenzig or the Kernberge.

  • Narrow old-town streets with little parking space
  • Hillside locations on the Jenzig and Kernberge
  • Many students and halls of residence of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen
  • Large housing estates in Lobeda and Winzerla with lifts

We decide on team, vehicle and equipment after a survey by video or by arrangement. This is how your private move in Jena succeeds from the first box to the last task, whether you are moving to the old town, to Lobeda or to one of the quieter residential areas.

From Jena-Nord to Winzerla: residential areas and their access

Jena is divided into numerous districts with very different characters, which directly affects the planning of a move in Jena. Anyone moving into the densely built-up city centre or to Jena-Nord often has to reckon with narrow streets, cobblestones and limited parking space. In the large housing estates of Lobeda and Winzerla, on the other hand, we find wide access roads, but multi-storey prefab buildings with lifts that have to be handled differently in logistical terms from an old building in Zentrum-West.

  • Centre & Jena-Nord: older flats, narrow lanes, parking restriction zone often needed
  • Lobeda-Ost/West & Winzerla: large housing estates with lifts, plenty of parking space
  • Wenigenjena & Ziegenhain: quiet residential areas on the banks of the Saale, some on hillsides
  • Zwätzen & Cospeda: detached houses and recent new-build areas
  • Göschwitz: commercial and industrial area, a frequent destination for company moves

Families are often drawn to Ziegenhain or Cospeda, where detached and terraced houses with gardens dominate. Students of the Friedrich Schiller University and the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences, on the other hand, mostly find their flats in the centre, in Jena-Nord or in the halls of residence along the Philosophenweg axis. Older people moving from a large house to a low-barrier flat benefit from our dedicated senior move service with particularly considerate support.

Whether an old building with a stucco ceiling in the city centre or a prefab block in Lobeda: we check stairwell width, lift size and approach for every address in advance and plan vehicle, team and equipment accordingly. This saves you unnecessary waiting times and extra costs on moving day.

What a move in Jena costs – guide values and factors

Moving costs in Jena depend on several factors: size of the flat, floor, distance, accessibility and required additional services such as packing or assembly. So that you get a realistic idea of the prices in advance, we have put together our guide values for a standard move within Jena.

Flat sizeStarting priceTypical duration
One-room flatfrom €349approx. 3–4 hours
Two-room flatfrom €579approx. 5–6 hours
Three-room flatfrom €909approx. 7–8 hours

These prices apply to a typical move without particular difficulties. Additional costs may arise if a parking restriction zone has to be set up in the narrow old town, a piano has to be transported or many boxes are to be put into storage. For smaller volumes, such as a room in a shared flat or individual pieces of furniture, a part load is often worthwhile: your goods travel together with other transports and the costs fall noticeably.

  • Floor and whether there is a lift
  • Distance between the old and new address
  • Access options for the removal van
  • Additional services such as packing, assembly, clearance
  • Bulky or particularly valuable items, e.g. pianos

After a short survey on site or by video, you receive a transparent fixed-price quote from us with no hidden costs – whether your new home is in quiet Wöllnitz or right in the student-filled centre.

Parking in the old town: plan the parking restriction in Jena early

Anyone moving in Jena knows the problem: especially in the old town around the Markt, Holzmarkt and Johannisstraße and in Jena-Nord, parking space is scarce and the streets are narrow. So that the removal van can stop right outside the door and long carrying distances are avoided, a parking restriction zone in Jena often makes sense. This saves time on moving day and spares backs and furniture.

In Jena it works differently from many other cities: you submit the application for a traffic law order to the city, ideally at least one week before the move, and according to the city the signs are put up by Kommunalservice Jena – no later than four working days before the start. We help you state the location, length and period correctly, so that moving out and moving in fit together.

  • Application with street, house number and period
  • Signs put up by the Kommunalservice, not by the moving company
  • Two locations for moving out and moving in on different streets
  • Short distances save time and reduce the risk of injury

Our price list states €30 to €100 per day for a parking restriction zone; in Jena, the city's fees apply to the order and signage. Especially in densely built-up areas such as the centre or near the university hospital, this is often cheaper than long carrying distances or a parking ticket for the removal van.

For Lobeda and Winzerla, with their large car parks in front of the residential blocks, we also check in advance whether a parking restriction is necessary or whether a normal parking space is enough. This way you are on the safe side, legally and organisationally, on moving day.

Moves from Jena to the region and to Berlin

In addition to moves within the city, we also plan moves from Jena to other regions. Jena lies on the A4 between Erfurt and Gera, and the A9 is quickly reached via the motorway network – from there you head towards Leipzig and Berlin or south.

From Jena to our base on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit it is around 259 road kilometres, about three and a half hours of pure driving time by lorry. For moves over long distances, our price list states from €4.10 per kilometre, plus loading and unloading, furniture assembly and packing material if required; the binding price is the fixed price after a survey.

We also plan moves to neighbouring cities in Thuringia, for example to Weimar, Erfurt, Gera, Gotha, Eisenach and Suhl. Because our team travels from Berlin, we schedule such dates with some lead time.

  • Fixed price after a survey instead of surprises
  • One contact person from collection to delivery
  • Option of a part load for smaller moving volumes
  • Route, breaks and arrival window planned in advance

Whether you are heading to Berlin, Munich or Hamburg: we plan the route, secure your belongings with blankets and straps and tell you in advance when the van will arrive at its destination.

Services for your move in Jena

For moves in Jena, as a Berlin moving company we offer a wide range of services that goes far beyond simply carrying furniture. Our aim is to take every step of your move in Jena off your hands – from the initial planning to the final cleaning of the old flat.

Whether you are moving from Wenigenjena to the neighbourhood of Zwätzen, from an old building on Wagnergasse to a modern flat in Winzerla, or relocating your office from Göschwitz to the centre: we bring movers, suitable equipment and the right vehicles from Berlin.

During the survey we discuss the particular features of your address, from steep stairwells in the old town to the long distances in the large housing estates. On request we also take care of the proper dismantling and assembly of furniture, connecting kitchen appliances and the final cleaning of your old flat, so that you can concentrate fully on your new home.

Office, practice, laboratory: company move in Jena

Jena is an important business location with companies such as Carl Zeiss, Jenoptik and numerous start-ups in optics and photonics, as well as a large university. For businesses, practices and institutes, we organise the company move in Jena so that ongoing operations are affected as little as possible.

Whether relocating an office from the Göschwitz industrial estate to the centre, moving a doctor's practice in the city centre or reorganising a research laboratory near the university – every company move requires individual planning of the IT move, file logistics and sensitive equipment.

  • Move planning outside business hours or at the weekend
  • Safe dismantling and assembly of office furniture and server cabinets
  • Labelling system for files, so that everything can be found again immediately at the new site
  • Coordination with property managers and, if necessary, parking restriction zones in narrow streets

Especially in the city centre and around Ernst-Abbe-Platz, access routes are limited, so we coordinate delivery times closely with property management and the public order office (Ordnungsamt). On the Göschwitz or Jena-Ost industrial estates, by contrast, wider access roads usually allow a faster process with larger vehicles.

For companies that only want to bring individual pieces of furniture or machines to another site, we also offer a cost-efficient part load. This saves you costs without sacrificing reliability. After a short on-site inventory, we prepare a detailed quote including a schedule, so that your team can work productively again as quickly as possible.

Student move in Jena – process, booking and prices

With the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences, Jena is one of Thuringia's student cities. Many students move within the city every semester, for example from a hall of residence of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen to a shared flat in the centre or in Jena-Nord. For these particular requirements we offer a student move in Jena at fair, predictable prices.

As students usually have less furniture but many boxes, a bed and a desk, we calculate the student move particularly affordably and with flexible dates at the start or end of semester – ideally with some lead time, because of the journey from Berlin.

  • Compact vehicles for shared-flat rooms and small flats
  • Flexible dates around the start and end of lectures
  • Fair fixed prices from €349 for smaller moves
  • Planning for narrow stairwells in halls of residence and old buildings

The process is deliberately kept straightforward: you send us the key details online or by phone, such as floor, approximate amount of furniture and preferred date. We then prepare a transparent quote, often without an in-person survey. Once the date is confirmed, our team takes care of transport, assembly and dismantling on the agreed day and, on request, the final cleaning of the old room.

For students who only need to transport a few boxes or individual pieces of furniture, a part load is often worthwhile, in which your goods are carried together with other transports. This keeps a move in Jena stress-free and affordable, even on a small budget.

Parking restriction for your move in Jena: application, signage and fees

If you need free parking space in front of the flat for furniture or removal vehicles, you submit an application for a traffic law order in Jena. This can be done informally by post, email or fax, ideally using the city's form. The application states your name and address, the location with street and house number, and the period.

The parking restriction signs must be up no later than 4 working days before they take effect. The application should therefore be received at least one week before the moving date. According to the city, Kommunalservice Jena takes care of the signage. The traffic organisation team (Team Verkehrsorganisation) is located at Anger 26. It can be reached on Monday and Tuesday from 8 am to 4 pm, Thursday from 8 am to 6 pm and Friday from 8 am to 12 noon; it is closed on Wednesdays.

According to the city's fee table, a parking restriction of up to three days costs €15. Signage costs €142.80 for one location and €238 for two locations. For moving out and moving in on different streets, it therefore makes sense to plan for two locations. The application form is available as a PDF download on service.jena.de.

Further information is available on our page about the parking restriction zone. The Jena guide explains districts and costs, and you can see all locations in Thuringia on the state page.

Lobeda, Göschwitz and the centre: Jena's neighbourhoods and registration

The city of Jena is divided into 30 neighbourhoods. Lobeda-Altstadt and Neulobeda are in the south-east, Göschwitz and Winzerla in the south, and Jena-Zentrum in the middle of the city. Anyone moving between these neighbourhoods usually plans two parking restriction locations for moving out and moving in. For each neighbourhood the city publishes information such as the members of the local council, meeting dates and event notices.

According to the city of Jena, after moving in you must register at the citizens' service within two weeks. A landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) is required; the tenancy agreement alone is no longer sufficient. Main and secondary residences can be registered in person or online, and you book appointments via the city's online appointment calendar. According to the city, students and trainees who newly register their main residence in Jena receive a welcome bonus of up to €120 (Hauptwohnsitzprämie), which they apply for separately.

The halls of residence are the responsibility of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen, which is based in Jena. Among others, it serves the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena. Clarify the moving-in arrangements directly with the Studierendenwerk, so that the key handover and moving date fit together.

You can read how to start your studies without stress under student move. An overview of settling in is in the guide for newcomers. For trips into the surrounding area, Weimar is a handy port of call.
