Your questions about moving in Gotha
A move within Gotha starts from €375 for a one-room flat, from €594 for a two-room flat and from €884 for a three-room flat. The exact costs depend on floor, lift and additional services and are offered as a fixed price after a free survey.
Gotha below Friedenstein Palace: how a move works
Gotha is the district town of the district of Gotha; around 46,000 people live in the core town and the neighbourhoods of Siebleben, Sundhausen, Uelleben and Boilstädt. Its landmark is Friedenstein Palace above the old town. The town lies between Erfurt and Eisenach on the A4 with the junctions Gotha and Gotha-Boxberg; the B7 links it with both neighbouring cities. Praktik Transport und Umzüge has no base in Gotha – our team comes from Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit.
With us, a move in Gotha begins with a free survey by video or by arrangement, in which we assess your needs. We then prepare a fixed-price quote with no hidden costs. We set the date with lead time, because it is around 328 road kilometres from our base to Gotha via the A9 and A4.
The city's requirements are important for planning: a parking restriction needs a traffic law order, the city states an application deadline of 14 days, and the signs must be up at least three days before it starts. This matters especially around the Hauptmarkt.
In the old town with its narrow lanes, we clarify access, carrying routes and floor beforehand so that there are no waiting times on moving day. For private customers we offer our private move, tailored to the specific address. Whether an older flat in the centre or a detached house in one of the neighbourhoods: we plan every move in Gotha with the same care.
Old town, Bahnhofstraße, neighbourhoods: residential areas in Gotha
Gotha is made up of different residential areas, each placing its own demands on a move. The old town around the Hauptmarkt and Schlossberg stands out with historic buildings, narrow lanes and in some cases no lifts – careful planning and suitable equipment are needed here. Around Bahnhofstraße, in the 19th century the top address of Gotha's wealthy upper middle class, there are villas and Gründerzeit buildings with high ceilings that require care when moving furniture.
Outside the centre there are residential areas with blocks of flats from the post-war and GDR periods. Lifts are more common here, but accessibility still varies greatly depending on the year of construction. The incorporated neighbourhoods such as Siebleben, Sundhausen, Uelleben and Boilstädt are attractive for families – mainly characterised by detached houses, semi-detached houses and smaller new-build areas with good access by car.
- Old town & palace area: historic buildings, narrow access
- Around Bahnhofstraße: villas and Gründerzeit buildings, high ceilings
- Residential areas outside the centre: blocks of flats, some with a lift
- Siebleben & Sundhausen: detached houses, quiet residential area
- Uelleben and Boilstädt: rural neighbourhoods incorporated in 1994
For each of these residential areas we check access, parking options and structural features in advance. For moves out of or into the old town we often recommend setting up a parking restriction zone, while in the neighbourhoods there is usually enough space for our vehicles right outside the door. This is how we make every move in Gotha – regardless of the district – efficient and stress-free for our customers.
What a move in Gotha costs
Moving costs in Gotha depend on several factors: size of the flat, floor, whether there is a lift, the distance between the old and new address and the additional services required, such as a packing service or furniture assembly. We calculate every move individually and attach the greatest importance to transparency – fixed prices instead of nasty surprises.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| One-room flat | from €375 |
| Two-room flat | from €594 |
| Three-room flat | from €884 |
| Long-distance move (per km) | from €4.25/km |
| Parking restriction zone (per day) | €30–100 |
These guide values serve as orientation for standard moves in Gotha and the surrounding area. For a third-floor flat without a lift in the city centre, the effort naturally increases, while a ground-level terraced house in Sundhausen or Boilstädt is usually cheaper to move. Distance also plays a role: a move within the town of Gotha is generally cheaper than a move to Erfurt, Weimar or even Berlin.
- Free quote after a survey on site or digitally
- Fixed price after a survey, with no hidden extra costs
- Several services can be combined in one quote
- Flexible scheduling, also possible at short notice
For additional services such as clearance of old furniture or safe piano transport, we are happy to prepare an individual supplementary quote. This way you always keep a full overview of the actual costs of your move in Gotha.
Parking restriction in Gotha: allow for the 14-day application deadline
Especially in Gotha's old town around the Hauptmarkt and the Schlossberg, the parking situation for removal vans is often tight. Narrow streets, pedestrian areas and limited parking space make loading and unloading difficult. A parking restriction zone ensures that the van can stand right outside the front door.
According to the city of Gotha, the parking restriction needs a traffic law order and, if applicable, a special use permit. The application deadline is 14 days, and the signs must be up at least three days before they take effect. As a rule, the commissioned moving company submits the application; we tell you which length and period suit your move. Our price list states €30 to €100 per day for a parking restriction zone.
In neighbourhoods such as Siebleben or Sundhausen a parking restriction is usually not necessary, because there is enough space in front of detached houses. It is different in the densely built-up city centre: there the application is almost always worthwhile.
- Application at least 14 days before the moving date
- Signs at least three days before they take effect
- Free assessment of whether a zone makes sense in your case
- City contact: Road Traffic Department in the New Town Hall
For moves to neighbouring cities such as Erfurt or Weimar, we also plan the parking restriction at the destination if the parking situation requires it. You will find more on our page about the parking restriction zone. This way your moving day in Gotha starts without searching for a parking space.
Gotha on the A4: moves to Erfurt, Eisenach or Berlin
Gotha lies on the A4 between Erfurt and Eisenach; via the Erfurt interchange (Erfurter Kreuz) you join the A71 heading south. Whether a move within Thuringia or to another federal state – we plan the route in advance and give you a fixed price after a survey.
Common destinations for moves from Gotha:
- Erfurt and Weimar to the east, via the A4 and B7
- Eisenach to the west
- Jena and Gera further east on the A4
- Suhl via the A71
- Berlin – around 328 road kilometres to our base on Stromstraße
For long distances, our price list states from €4.25/km; the actual costs depend on moving volume and additional services, and the binding price is the fixed price after a survey. If you do not want to transport your entire household, you can use our part load: your goods travel together with other consignments, which noticeably reduces costs for smaller volumes.
This option is well suited to students or commuters moving between Gotha and university cities such as Erfurt or Jena. Because our team travels from Berlin, we set dates with lead time and plan the route so that waiting times stay short and the delivery date holds.

As a business location in the district of Gotha, the town is characterised by medium-sized companies, craft businesses and service providers. For a company move in Gotha, discretion and punctuality are needed above all, alongside logistical skill, so that business operations can continue with as little interruption as possible.

We also plan supra-regional company moves, for example from Gotha to Erfurt or towards Gera. Thanks to the good connection via the A4, even longer distances can be covered in a short time. Talk to us early so that together we can draw up a moving plan that suits your business operations and minimises downtime.

Parking restriction for your move in Gotha: application to the road traffic authority
For a temporary parking restriction when moving in Gotha, you need a traffic law order and, if applicable, a special use permit. On its website, the city of Gotha explains that the application is normally made by the commissioned moving company. If the move takes place without a company, you submit the applications as a private individual.
Important for the application are the location to be kept clear, the period and the length in metres, which depends on the vehicle. The main application can be made informally or online; you only need a power of attorney if someone acts on your behalf. The application deadline is 14 days, and the traffic signs must be up at least 3 days before they take effect. The fee varies according to duration and scope; the city does not state an amount. You do not need to appear in person; according to the city, a modern online procedure is in preparation. The legal bases are § 45 StVO and § 18 of the Thuringian Roads Act (Thüringer Straßengesetz).
As a large town within its district, Gotha has its own road traffic authority. The contact is the Road Traffic/Trade Department (Abteilung Straßenverkehr/Gewerbe) in the New Town Hall, Ekhofplatz 24, telephone 03621 222-715. The city administration works by appointment.
Read more about our offer under parking restriction zone. Notes on residential areas and costs are in the Gotha moving guide. You will find further locations in Thuringia.
Gotha: citizens' office, registration and parking after the move
The Historic Town Hall of Gotha stands at Hauptmarkt 1. The citizens' service office (Bürgerbüro) is located in the New Town Hall on Ekhofplatz 24 (telephone 03621 222-402). According to the city, it is open on Mondays and Fridays from 9 am to 2 pm, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 6 pm and on Wednesdays from 9 am to 12 noon. Check the times on gotha.de before your visit.
After moving in, you must register within two weeks. According to the city of Gotha, this also applies when moving within the town; deregistering with your previous registration office is not necessary. You can register online with a BundID account and an ID card with the eID function, or by appointment at the citizens' office. For rented flats you upload the landlord's moving-in confirmation online; in person you bring the completed registration form and the required documents. Late registration can result in a fine.
Anyone wishing to apply for a residents' parking permit must be registered with a main or secondary residence in the residents' parking area and must not have a private parking space. It is therefore advisable to apply for the parking permit only after re-registering.
The guide for newcomers shows how to settle into the former ducal residence town. If you travel to Erfurt or Eisenach more often, you will find our service information for those cities too.
