Frequently asked questions about moving in Weimar
A move within Weimar starts from €349 for a one-room flat, from €599 for a two-room flat and from €909 for a three-room flat. The exact price depends on floor, lift and additional services.
Weimar on the Ilm: how a move works in the city of the classics
A move in Weimar combines the requirements of a small historic town with the everyday life of a university city. The old town lies on a bend of the Ilm; "Classical Weimar" has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, and the Bauhaus sites since 1996. For a move this means: traffic-calmed areas, cobblestones and hardly any parking space right outside the front door. Because our team travels from Berlin (Stromstraße 21), we plan every private move in Weimar with lead time.
This is how a move in Weimar works with us:
- Free survey by video or by arrangement, with a view to access in your street
- Quote with a comprehensible cost breakdown and fixed price
- Advice on applying for a parking restriction zone at the road traffic authority, if needed in the old town or in narrow residential streets
- Packing your belongings, including materials on request
- Transport with a vehicle that suits the width of the street
- Assembly and dismantling of furniture and final cleaning of the old flat
Weimar is connected via the Weimar junction of the A4, plus the Apolda and Nohra exits. From our base in Berlin-Moabit it is around 283 road kilometres via the A9 and A4. In the city we work with consideration for listed buildings and the pedestrian zone. Especially in the old town or around the Park an der Ilm, early planning of the parking space is crucial so that moving day runs smoothly.
Old town, prefab blocks, neighbourhoods: residential areas in Weimar
Weimar is divided into numerous districts with very different residential characters, which should be taken into account in every move in Weimar. The old town around the Marktplatz, Theaterplatz and Frauenplan stands out with historic old buildings, often without a lift and with narrow stairwells – good preparation counts here, sometimes including our piano transport service when heavy instruments or antiques have to be moved over narrow stairs.
In the west of the city lies Weimar-West, a large housing estate built in prefab construction from 1978; Weimar-Nord (from 1962) and Schöndorf-Waldstadt on the Ettersberg (from 1986) were also built as prefab estates. Life is quieter in Ehringsdorf in the south-east, in Tiefurt or in Gaberndorf, where new residential areas were built after 1990 – there we mainly clarify access and carrying routes.
The incorporated neighbourhoods such as Legefeld, Holzdorf, Süßenborn, Taubach and Niedergrunstedt offer a village character with good connections to the B7 and B85 federal roads. Students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Liszt School of Music often live near Coudraystraße or in halls of residence of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen, for which we offer dedicated student move packages.
Whether an older flat in the city centre, a prefab block in Weimar-West or a house in Ehringsdorf – we adapt vehicle size, team size and parking planning to the address after the survey. For older residents planning a move into a barrier-free flat, our senior move service is also available, with particular consideration.
What a move in Weimar costs
Moving costs in Weimar depend on several factors: size of the flat, floor, whether there is a lift, the distance between the old and new address and any additional services required, such as a parking restriction zone or a clearance. The following overview serves as a guide for a move within Weimar or the surrounding area:
| Service | Price from | Note |
|---|---|---|
| One-room flat | €349 | e.g. student apartment near the old town |
| Two-room flat | €599 | typical for Weimar-West or Schöndorf |
| Three-room flat | €909 | family flat, e.g. in Oberweimar |
| Long-distance move (per km) | from €4.10 | nationwide from Weimar |
| Parking restriction zone | €30–100/day | depending on zone and duration |
The following points also affect the final price:
- Floor and whether there is a lift – many old-town houses in Weimar have none
- Distance, e.g. within Weimar or towards Erfurt, Jena and Gotha
- Additional services such as a packing service, assembly or clearance
- Date: weekend dates and the end of the month are in higher demand and should be booked early
For a binding quote we recommend a free survey on site or by video. This gives you a transparent calculation with no hidden costs, so you can plan your move in Weimar stress-free.
Parking space at the door: parking restriction in Weimar
Anyone moving in Weimar city centre knows the problem: in the old town around Theaterplatz, Frauenplan and Schillerstraße, parking space is scarce, and there is often no free space for removal vehicles right outside the front door. So that moving day is not undone by long carrying distances, a parking restriction zone often makes sense.
In Weimar, the city's road traffic authority is responsible for this, not the public order office (Ordnungsamt). A traffic law order is required, applied for in writing; the city states a fee of €31.50 for it. The signs are put up by a traffic safety company that you commission yourself, and they must be up at least three days before the start. Our price list states €30 to €100 per day for a parking restriction zone.
You should apply early, especially in narrow streets of the old town, but also in densely built-up parts of Weimar-West or Schöndorf with high parking pressure. We tell you which length and period suit your move.
- Written application to the road traffic authority
- Signs put up by a traffic safety company, at least three days beforehand
- Planning also for hard-to-reach addresses in the old town
- Coordination with a zone at the destination outside Weimar
This leaves space for removal vans, ramps and carrying aids – even where historic buildings and narrow lanes would otherwise make the move difficult.
From Weimar to Erfurt, Jena – or Berlin
In terms of transport, Weimar lies centrally in Thuringia: the A4 connects the city with Eisenach and Gotha to the west and with Jena and Gera to the east. Erfurt is its direct neighbour, and you reach Suhl via the A71. We use these connections for moves within Thuringia as well as for moves to other federal states.
From Weimar to our base on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit it is around 283 road kilometres, first on the A4 and then on the A9 heading north. For moves over long distances, our price list states from €4.10 per kilometre, depending on moving volume, floor and additional services; the binding price is the fixed price after a survey.
A full removal van for the whole route is not always worthwhile. For smaller moving volumes, our part load is an affordable alternative: your goods travel together with other consignments, which significantly lowers the price per cubic metre.
- Moves from Weimar with a fixed price after a survey
- Regional moves to Erfurt, Jena, Gera, Gotha, Eisenach and Suhl
- Part load for smaller moving volumes and students
- Moves abroad on request
Whether within Thuringia or right across Germany – we plan the route and arrival time so that your move runs on schedule and cost-efficiently. Because our team travels from Berlin, we schedule dates with some lead time.
Services for your move in Weimar
As a moving company from Berlin, we offer a wide range of services in Weimar, tailored to the needs of private individuals, families and companies. From a student apartment in the old town to a villa in Tiefurt – we adapt our services individually to the particular living situation.
- Private move – from a one-room flat to a detached house, including packing and assembly
- Company move – for offices, law firms and businesses in Weimar and the surrounding area
- Part load – cost-effective transport for smaller moving volumes
- Clearance – household clearances, cellar clearance and disposal
- Parking restriction zone – planning parking space in the old town and adjacent districts

- Student move – affordable packages for students of the Bauhaus-Universität
We check road conditions in Weimar's old town and access routes in Weimar-West, Schöndorf or neighbourhoods such as Legefeld and Süßenborn before the date. This lets us calculate vehicle size, team size and scheduling realistically – with no nasty surprises on moving day.
Whether a complete household, a single piano or just a few boxes – we put together a suitable service package for every need and are happy to advise you, without obligation, on the additional services that make sense for your move in Weimar.
Office, law firm, practice: company move in Weimar
As home to the Bauhaus-Universität, the Liszt School of Music and numerous cultural and administrative institutions of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, Weimar is also an important business location. In addition, there are industrial estates such as in Legefeld as well as smaller office and practice locations in the city centre and in Weimar-West. A smooth company move in Weimar needs precise planning, so that the business has as little downtime as possible.
Our company move service covers the complete organisation of office, law firm and practice moves: from dismantling and safely transporting the IT infrastructure to reassembly at the new location. Where possible, we work outside core working hours or at the weekend, so as to disrupt customer traffic and workflows as little as possible.
- Dismantling and transport of office furniture, filing cabinets and server cabinets
- Labelling system for structured refitting at the new location
- Safe handling of sensitive documents and IT equipment
- Coordination with landlords regarding delivery times and lift use
- On request, setting up a parking restriction zone in front of the office building
We provide suitable teams and vehicles both for smaller moves of individual practices or start-ups near the city centre and for larger administrative moves on the industrial estates on the edge of town. As many office buildings in Weimar are housed in listed old buildings, we check access routes and stairwells carefully in advance to avoid damage to the building fabric and inventory. This way your company move in Weimar is completed on schedule and with the shortest possible interruption to business operations.
Student move in Weimar: process & simple booking
With the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Liszt School of Music, Weimar is a city with many students who regularly move within the city or to and from Weimar. Whether a hall of residence of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen, a shared flat in the old town or a first flat of their own in Weimar-West – our student move service is specially tailored to limited budgets and usually smaller moving volumes.
For students we offer affordable fixed prices, which can be combined with our part load if only a few boxes and pieces of furniture need to be transported. Dates around the start and end of semester are best planned with some lead time, because of the journey from Berlin.
Booking a move in Weimar with us is straightforward and takes just a few steps:
- Enquiry via our online form or by phone, stating flat size, floor and preferred date
- Free assessment of the effort, including a short survey if needed
- A transparent fixed-price quote sent to you with no hidden costs
- Date confirmation and, if needed, advice on applying for a parking restriction zone near the hall of residence or shared flat
- The move carried out by our team from Berlin, including assembly and dismantling of furniture
On request we also take care of the clearance of old pieces of furniture that are no longer needed when moving out of the shared flat. This gives students in Weimar one contact person for the entire moving process – from the first enquiry to the new flat ready for handover.
Parking restriction in Weimar: application to the road traffic authority
In Weimar, you apply for the parking restriction for moving day at the road traffic authority of the city administration. On its service page, the city states:
- Applicant: usually the commissioned moving company; without a moving company, you submit the application as a private individual. It must be received in writing by the authority.
- Approval: a traffic law order is required, plus a special use permit (Sondernutzungserlaubnis) if applicable.
- Fee: €31.50 for the order under GebOSt. On top of this come the costs of a traffic safety company for the signs.
- Signs: They must be put up at least three days before they take effect.
- Deadline: The page states two weeks; elsewhere on the same page four weeks are mentioned. So ask about the applicable deadline in advance.
The authority is located at Schwanseestraße 17, 99423 Weimar, telephone 03643 762-332. It is open on Tuesdays from 9 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 6 pm, on Thursdays from 9 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 3 pm and on Fridays from 9 am to 12 noon; it is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays. According to the city, there is no online application yet; until then, the city's application form or a written application is used. Among other things, the form asks for the addresses, the length of the zone and a sketch showing signs and vehicle position. You can see further locations in the region under Thuringia.
Weimar's old town, halls of residence and registration: moving into Weimar
According to the city of Weimar, the old town is largely traffic-calmed and includes a pedestrian zone with shops and restaurants. In 2021, 3,723 people lived there in 527 buildings with 1,967 flats; most residential buildings are historic and elaborately renovated. For moves in the old town, check in advance how close the van can get and plan for carrying routes. The road traffic authority can tell you whether special delivery or access times apply in the pedestrian zone.
The Studierendenwerk Thüringen is responsible for students, among others at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Liszt School of Music (Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT). It runs 12 halls of residence in Weimar with a combined 1,161 places, including Jakobsplan 1 (350 places), Merketalstraße 48/48a (149) and Amalienstraße 1/3 (101). For applications, the Studierendenwerk refers to its application procedure. Read more about the process under student move.
After moving in, the obligation to register within two weeks applies. You register at the citizens' service at Schwanseestraße 17 (on Saturdays only on the first Saturday of the month from 8 am to 12 noon) by appointment, or online via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de (BundID and online ID function). You need your ID and the landlord's confirmation. A guide to the city is in the article Moving to Weimar.
