Everything important about moving in Erfurt
The costs depend on the size of the flat and the effort involved. With us, a one-room flat costs from €344, a two-room flat from €594 and a three-room flat from €909. Additional services such as packing or house clearance are charged separately.
How a move works between Domplatz and the edge of town
Erfurt, the state capital of Thuringia with around 217,000 inhabitants, combines a medieval atmosphere with modern infrastructure as the economic and administrative centre of the Free State. Anyone moving here encounters a city with narrow lanes in the historic Altstadt around the Krämerbrücke and Domplatz, but also spacious new-build areas on the edge of town. For Praktik Transport und Umzüge, a moving company from Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit, this means clarifying access, floor and parking space precisely in advance.
The typical process of a move in Erfurt starts with a free survey or an assessment by video, followed by a transparent fixed-price quote. We then take care of packing, dismantling furniture, transport and reassembly in the new flat. Especially in the Altstadt with its narrow roads, for example on Michaelisstraße or around Waagegasse, good planning is crucial to take account of parking restriction zones and narrow hallways.
Local particularities also include the proximity to important traffic routes: the A4 connects Erfurt east–west with Frankfurt and Dresden, and the A71 runs south to Suhl and Schweinfurt and north via Sömmerda to Sangerhausen. Since 2017, Erfurt Hauptbahnhof has been an important ICE hub, which is relevant for commuters.
For addresses in districts such as Ilversgehofen, the Krämpfervorstadt or Melchendorf, we ask about parking options, lift sizes in period buildings and access routes before moving day. That way your private move in Erfurt runs smoothly and without nasty surprises – from the first box to the last screw in your new shelves.
Erfurt's districts: Altstadt, inner suburbs and large housing estates
Erfurt is divided into numerous districts with very different characters, which has a direct effect on how a move works. The Altstadt is characterised by historic buildings, narrow streets and often no lifts – practical skill is needed here when transporting furniture. The adjoining Krämpfervorstadt and Johannesvorstadt are popular residential areas with late-19th-century period buildings, narrow one-way streets and limited parking.
If you prefer something more modern, districts such as Roter Berg, Rieth or Berliner Platz have mainly prefabricated tower blocks and apartment buildings with better access for our removal vehicles. Quieter areas on the edge of town include Gispersleben, Bischleben-Stedten or Hochheim, often with detached and terraced houses. Herrenberg and Wiesenhügel are among the prefabricated housing estates in the south-east of the city.
According to the University of Erfurt, the Andreasvorstadt north of the Altstadt, within walking distance of the university, is the classic choice for students – moves here are often short-notice and involve smaller volumes. In such cases a part load is often worthwhile instead of a whole removal van.
- Close to the centre: Altstadt, Krämpfervorstadt, Johannesvorstadt
- Modern & easy to reach: Berliner Platz, Roter Berg, Rieth
- Quiet & family-friendly: Gispersleben, Hochheim, Bischleben-Stedten
- Student character: Andreasvorstadt near the university
Because our team travels from Berlin, we clarify the floor, lift and parking space in advance for every Erfurt address – whether a period building in the Löbervorstadt or a house in Vieselbach.
What a move in Erfurt costs – guide figures
Moving costs in Erfurt depend on several factors: size of the flat, distance, floor, accessibility and any additional services required, such as packing material or furniture assembly. As a moving company from Berlin, we calculate fixed prices after a survey, so that you know from the start what to expect.
| Service | Price from |
|---|---|
| One-room flat | €344 |
| Two-room flat | €594 |
| Three-room flat | €909 |
| Long-distance move (per km) | from €3.80/km |
| Parking restriction zone (per day) | €30–100 |
These guide figures apply to standard moves within Erfurt and to the immediate surrounding area, for example to Gotha, Weimar or Jena. Additional costs may arise for bulky waste disposal, piano transport or particularly bulky pieces of furniture. The floor also plays a role: period buildings without a lift in the Löbervorstadt or Brühlervorstadt require more staff and time than modern new builds in Marbach or Vieselbach.
Another cost factor is the parking situation on site. In narrow streets of the Altstadt, we recommend setting up a parking restriction zone early, to avoid delays on moving day and save additional waiting time. If you only want to transport a few pieces of furniture, you can save considerably with a part load, as the trip can be combined with other customers' jobs.
On request, we draw up an individual quote after a free survey – so you always keep track of the costs of your move in Erfurt, with no hidden extra costs at the end.
Parking around the Krämerbrücke, Fischmarkt and Anger
Especially in Erfurt's historic Altstadt, with its narrow lanes around the Krämerbrücke, Domplatz and Fischmarkt, parking space is often scarce. Narrow streets and limited loading zones make it considerably harder to stop spontaneously with the removal van. That is why we clarify early whether a parking restriction zone is needed in front of the old and the new address – according to the federal portal, each address needs its own order.
The application goes to the city's road traffic authority and should be submitted at least two weeks before the date. The signs must be in place three days beforehand; they may be put up by a traffic safety company or a person with an MVAS certificate. Depending on location and duration, this costs between 30 and 100 euros per day.
Especially in districts such as the Johannesvorstadt, the Krämpfervorstadt or around the Anger, Erfurt's lively shopping area, a parking restriction zone is often essential to avoid fines or long carrying distances. In the large housing estates at Roter Berg or in Rieth, a reserved loading zone can also speed up the process considerably.
- Application at least two weeks before the date
- Signs three days beforehand, put up by a traffic safety company
- Avoiding fines and waiting time
- Shorter carrying distances, a quicker move
Use our service for the parking restriction zone in Erfurt, so that your moving day runs smoothly and stress-free from start to finish – whether in the historic Altstadt or a modern residential area on the edge of town.
Erfurt on the A4 and A71 – routes into the region and to Berlin
Erfurt is conveniently located in the centre of Germany, which makes it an excellent starting point for long-distance moves. The A4 leads west towards Frankfurt am Main and east towards Dresden. The A71 connects Erfurt to the south with Suhl and Schweinfurt, and to the north with Sömmerda and the Sangerhausen area. It is around 301 road kilometres to our base at Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit.
Within Thuringia, we carry out moves to neighbouring towns such as Weimar, Gotha and Jena, as well as to Eisenach, Gera and Suhl – ideal for customers moving within Thuringia or with relatives in the region.
For long-distance moves we charge transparently from 3.80 euros per kilometre, depending on the volume of the move and additional services such as packing and unpacking. If you only want to transport a few pieces of furniture or boxes, you benefit from our part load, in which your belongings are combined with other trips and can therefore be transported much more cheaply.
Thanks to the ICE hub at Erfurt Hauptbahnhof and the proximity to Erfurt-Weimar Airport, the city is also an attractive place to live for commuters who frequently travel between federal states. We agree the loading time and arrival with you in advance, so that your belongings arrive at the destination as planned – whether within Thuringia or anywhere in Germany.

Office and business moves in Erfurt
Erfurt is a business location for logistics, mechanical engineering and microelectronics – from the industrial estate at Urbicher Kreuz, where X-FAB, for example, has settled, to offices near the main station. Companies moving here need a partner who minimises downtime and disrupts ongoing business as little as possible.
Our business move service in Erfurt covers complete planning, dismantling and assembling office furniture, proper transport of IT equipment and setting up the new premises. We work closely with your facility management and prefer to schedule moves outside core working hours or at weekends to avoid losses in productivity.
Especially in the city centre, where many administrative and service companies are housed in historic buildings with limited access, careful logistics planning is crucial. We also clarify whether a parking restriction zone is needed so that removal vehicles can load and unload right in front of the building.
- Moving offices, law firms and practices
- Safe transport of servers and sensitive IT equipment
- Furnishing and fitting out the new business premises
- Flexible scheduling, including at night or at weekends
- File storage and disposal in compliance with data protection
We also offer coordinated moving solutions for companies expanding from Erfurt or opening branches in Jena, Gera or Gotha. In addition, we help with the house clearance of old office space, so that it can be handed over to the landlord on time and swept clean. This is how we make office and business moves in Erfurt efficient, predictable and low-risk for your day-to-day business.
Student moves in Erfurt & easy booking
With the University of Erfurt and the Fachhochschule Erfurt, the city attracts numerous students every year, who often move to the Andreasvorstadt, the Brühlervorstadt or halls of residence near the campus. Student moves are usually characterised by smaller moving volumes, tight time windows and a limited budget – and that is exactly what our student move service in Erfurt is tailored to.
We offer flexible dates, also at short notice at the start of term, as well as affordable flat rates for rooms in shared flats and small flats. If you only need to transport a few pieces of furniture or boxes, you can also benefit from our part load and reduce the costs further. When moving out of halls of residence, we also help with the final clearance and handover of the rooms.
Booking a move in Erfurt with us could hardly be simpler:
- 1. Get in touch: by phone, email or via our online form.
- 2. Survey: on site or by video, for a precise assessment of the moving volume.
- 3. Fixed-price quote: transparent and with no hidden costs.
- 4. Arranging the date: according to your wishes, weekends also possible.
- 5. Carrying out the move: packing, transport and setting up by our team from Berlin.
Besides students, we also sensitively support older residents of Erfurt with their move – our senior move takes account of particular needs such as step-free access or the transport of keepsakes. Whether it is a student move to the Johannesvorstadt or a senior move into assisted living at Roter Berg – we ensure a smooth process from the first enquiry to the last box.
Parking restrictions for moves in Erfurt: application, deadlines and signage
Anyone moving in Erfurt usually needs a free space right in front of the door for the removal van. The federal portal describes the procedure for Thuringia: a temporary parking restriction requires a traffic order and, if necessary, also a special use permit (Sondernutzungserlaubnis). As the legal basis, the portal cites, among others, § 45 StVO and § 18 of the Thuringian Roads Act (Thüringer Straßengesetz). The application goes to the local road traffic authority or the responsible office of the city. An informal application is sufficient; according to the portal, you do not need to attend in person.
According to the portal, the authority requires the following details:
- Location and period of the parking restriction,
- Length in metres, depending on the vehicle used,
- the traffic safety company or a person with an MVAS certificate.
Submit the application at least two weeks before the moving date. The traffic signs must be in place at least three days before they take effect and may only be put up once the order has been received. Separate orders are needed for the moving-out and moving-in addresses. The fee depends on the duration and scope of the measure; the portal does not give a fixed amount, so ask the city. Placeholders such as ropes, boxes or chairs are not permitted. You will find further information on our parking restriction zone page.
Student living in Erfurt: halls, neighbourhoods and registration
Erfurt offers several options when moving for your studies. According to its website, the Studierendenwerk Thüringen runs ten halls of residence in the city, including Donaustraße 28 to 42 with 252 places, Nordhäuser Straße 78 with 247 places, and Alfred-Weber-Platz 2 and 5 on the campus. The rents are all-inclusive rents covering running costs such as water, electricity and heating; according to the Studierendenwerk, the prices stated apply for a minimum tenancy of one semester.
The University of Erfurt gives fixed dates for applications: for the winter semester they open on 1 April, for the summer semester on 1 October. Places are allocated no earlier than six weeks before the start of the semester, in the order in which applications are received; anyone who applies too late ends up on the waiting list.
For those looking for a flat on the open market, the university describes the Andreasvorstadt as the classic choice for students, with many shared flats, a short walk to the university and good tram connections. Cheaper options, it says, are large housing complexes such as at Berliner Platz, in Rieth, at Moskauer Platz and at Roter Berg, each with a tram to the campus.
After moving in, the registration obligation applies: the Federal Registration Act (BMG) requires you to register within two weeks. You can read more about the process under our student move, and more about the city in the guide Living in Erfurt.
