Moving to Weimar: Costs Process & Districts

Weimar guide
Weimar: a small city with two World Heritage titles
Districts, housing, public offices
Weimar has around 65,500 inhabitants and lies on the Ilm, roughly halfway between Erfurt and Jena. UNESCO lists the city twice: as "Classical Weimar" and with the Bauhaus sites. With the Bauhaus University and the Franz Liszt University of Music, Weimar is also a place to study. For your move to Weimar we take care of packing, transport and assembly; you can find details under Private move.
We are based in Berlin and operate nationwide – it is around 283 road kilometres to Weimar, and the page Moving Berlin – Weimar describes the process and route. In the Old Town around the Markt and Theaterplatz, stopping spaces are scarce; in Weimar-West or Schöndorf, access is usually easier. You can find further destinations under Long-distance moves.

What we clarify before moving day in Weimar
Parking reservation, date, access
In Weimar's Old Town the streets are narrow and stopping spaces around the Markt and Theaterplatz are limited. Reserving a parking space requires a traffic order (verkehrsrechtliche Anordnung) from the city's road traffic authority – we clarify the deadline with you early on. Planning, packing, transport and assembly come from a single source, and the price is set as a fixed price after the survey. Your goods are covered by liability under the HGB (€620 per m³).

Weimar
for newcomers
When moving to Weimar, think early about the parking reservation in front of the building, the appointment at the citizens' service and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). If you are starting at the Bauhaus University or the music university, it is best to look before the semester begins. We advise you on the checklist, schedule and interim storage if the new flat is not yet ready to move into.

Frequently asked questions about living in Weimar
Core city and localities: how Weimar is organised
Weimar is divided into ten statistical districts in the core city and eleven incorporated localities (Ortsteile). The core city includes the Old Town (Altstadt) around the Markt and Theaterplatz, the Nordvorstadt, Westvorstadt, Südstadt and Parkvorstadt, as well as the newer housing estates of Weimar-Nord, Weimar-West and Schöndorf (Waldstadt). In the Old Town you live in historic buildings with short distances, but little space for removal vans.
Living is more rural in localities such as Tiefurt with its palace and park, Oberweimar and Ehringsdorf on the Ilm, or in Gaberndorf, Legefeld, Gelmeroda, Possendorf, Taubach and Tröbsdorf. In the south-west, near Legefeld and Possendorf, the A4 runs through the city's territory.
Studying, working and living in Weimar
The housing market in Weimar is shaped by students and families alike. We deliberately do not quote reliable current rent figures here; compare offers on the usual portals and start your search before the semester begins, when many first-year students need a flat. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Franz Liszt University of Music are the city's two universities; Erfurt and Jena are within commuting distance.
Weimar is small but culturally rich: the Klassik Stiftung runs Goethe's House, Schiller's House, Belvedere Palace and Park and the Park on the Ilm, among others. Anyone moving here finds short distances and plenty of greenery. Our team schedules your moving date to match the handover of the new flat.

Weimar: applying to the road traffic authority for a parking reservation for your move
If you want to keep a space free for the removal van in Weimar, you need a traffic order. According to the city of Weimar, the road traffic authority of the city administration is responsible (Schwanseestraße 17, 99423 Weimar, telephone 03643 762-332). The legal basis is § 45 of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO). You can submit the application informally or via the city's online procedure; for digital applications, attach the documents as a photo or scan.
Deadline: the city gives contradictory information on its page, namely an application deadline of 14 days and, elsewhere, four weeks before the moving day. At least two weeks' lead time is recommended. To be on the safe side, allow four weeks and check with the authority. According to the city, the traffic signs must be in place at least three days before they take effect.
Costs: for the traffic order, the city states 31.50 EUR under the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt). On top of this come the costs of a traffic safety company, which puts up the signs and which you commission yourself. In the application, state:
- the location and period of the reservation
- the required length in metres, depending on the vehicle
- the traffic safety company or a person with an MVAS certificate
The authority's office hours are Tuesdays 9 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 6 pm, Thursdays 9 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 3 pm, and Fridays 9 am to 12 noon. If you do not want to handle the coordination yourself, you can find an overview of our parking restriction zone service.
Weimar: citizens' service appointments, car parks and bulky waste after moving in
For registration after moving in, the citizens' service in Building II of the city administration (Schwanseestraße 17) is responsible in Weimar. According to the city, matters are generally only dealt with by appointment, online via termine-reservieren.de or by phone on 03643 762-0. Without an appointment there are only office hours for urgent cases, namely Tuesdays 8 am to 10 am and Thursdays 1 pm to 3 pm. According to the city, you register your new residence within 14 days; there is also electronic residence registration, which the city is introducing step by step. You can find other places to notify of your new address in our article Change of address: whom to inform?.
For helpers and visitors on moving day, the city names central parking options: the underground car park at the Goethehaus with 340 spaces, the Hauptpost multi-storey car park with 300 and the Atrium underground car park with 800 spaces. There are also paid short-stay parking spaces in the city centre.
For leftover household items, the municipal enterprise Kommunalservice (Industriestraße 14, 99427 Weimar, telephone 03643 4341-501) is the contact point for bulky waste. The city points out that disposal may take place via fixed collection dates, collection on request or central drop-off points, depending on the arrangement. We clear larger quantities for you as part of a house clearance. Read more about the city and the surrounding area on our page Moving in Weimar.
