Long-distance move Berlin – Leiden: route process & schedule

From Berlin to South Holland
Long-distance move to Leiden: driving times, loading times, gemeente
Guide
A long-distance move to Leiden is not a customs matter: the Netherlands is in the EU, so your household goods cross the border without customs papers and without an inventory list for checks. What needs planning is the route of around 691 km with driving time limits, the German Sunday driving ban for heavy lorries, the loading times in the low-traffic city centre and, after arrival, registration with the municipality (gemeente) including the citizen service number (BSN). Leiden is a university city in South Holland, around 45 km south-west of Amsterdam and 18 km north-east of The Hague. We take care of packing, transport and assembly.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 691 km on the A2 and the A30 near Bad Bentheim into the Netherlands, then on the A1 and A12 past Utrecht to Leiden. By lorry that is about 10.5 hours including breaks – more than one day's driving time, so it is done with two drivers or an overnight stop. Since 1 July 2026 a lorry toll has applied in the Netherlands, which is included in the fixed price. For your home move we clarify the loading time at your address. Moving
& transport from one provider
A move to the Netherlands involves several topics: the route with driving time limits and the lorry toll, the German Sunday driving ban for heavy lorries, the loading times and the zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissie-Zone) in the city centre, registration with the gemeente including the BSN, health insurance and the car. This guide shows what you handle yourself and what we take care of. Customs duties play no role within the EU. We answer frequently asked questions briefly and specifically below.

Common questions
Formalities when moving to the Netherlands
As the Netherlands is part of the European Union, there are no customs formalities for your household goods when moving to Leiden – what matters is that the goods come from an EU country, not your nationality. A simple box list still helps when unloading and in the event of damage. According to the Gemeente Leiden, anyone coming from abroad and staying longer than four months registers in person; the appointment should be within five working days of the move. You receive your BSN at this appointment. For the car, you can apply for an exemption from the BPM (vehicle registration tax) when moving, under certain conditions; the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax authority) sets out the conditions, and registration is handled by the RDW (vehicle authority).
Process and particularities of the move to Leiden
A long-distance move to Leiden starts with an inventory and a schedule that takes into account driving time limits, the Sunday driving ban and the loading times in the city centre. Leiden grew up at the confluence of the Oude Rijn and Nieuwe Rijn and has a historic city centre with canals and narrow streets; parking spaces are scarce and the centre is low-traffic. That is why we clarify carrying distances and a parking space in advance and, if needed, plan a furniture lift. Leiden University is the oldest in the Netherlands, and there is also a university medical centre and the Bio Science Park. If the flat is not yet free, we store your belongings in Berlin in the meantime and deliver on the agreed date. We plan the return journey to Berlin in the same way.

Long-distance move to Leiden: Sunday driving ban, driving times and schedule
A long-distance move from Berlin to Leiden can only be planned properly once the travel day and driving times are fixed. In Germany, under § 30 StVO, lorries with a permissible gross weight of over 7.5 t are banned from driving on Sundays and public holidays from 0.00 to 22.00 for commercial or paid transport of goods. The list of exceptions in the law does not explicitly name removal traffic. So it is better not to schedule loading and driving dates on Sundays and public holidays.
For the drivers, EU Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 applies. According to the European Commission, daily driving time may not exceed 9 hours, with 10 hours allowed twice a week. A break of at least 45 minutes is required after 4.5 hours at the latest, daily rest is at least 11 hours, and weekly driving time is limited to 56 hours, with a maximum of 90 hours over two weeks. Depending on the volume of household goods, it can make sense to spread the journey and unloading over two days.
For your schedule this means:
- A survey and joint agreement on the loading and unloading days
- Loading in Berlin, then the journey with breaks in line with the legal driving times
- Unloading in Leiden in a time window that fits the city's access rules
You will find an overview of our service under Long-distance move.
Leiden: access to the city centre, zero-emission zone and registration
According to the Gemeente Leiden, loading and unloading in the low-traffic (autoluw) Binnenstad is only permitted from Monday to Saturday between 4.30 am and 11.00 am. Outside these times you can apply for a day exemption (dagontheffing). According to the municipality it costs 10.85 euros, is applied for online at the e-Loket (private individuals with DigiD) or at the counter by appointment on 14 071, and is issued immediately. It applies to one number plate only and is not a parking permit. The page does not mention removal vans separately, so clarify your case in advance.
In addition, since 1 January 2025 a zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissie-Zone) has applied in the historic city centre to goods transport vehicles, with a transitional arrangement for cleaner vehicles until 2030. You can check whether a vehicle is affected with the number plate check on opwegnaarzes.nl.
Registration in the population register (BRP) takes place in person at the Stadskantoor, Bargelaan 190. Appointments via the website or tel. 0031 71 516 51 65; all family members come along. Registration is free of charge, and according to the municipality the BSN arrives by post within three weeks. According to the Gemeente Leiden, the appointment should take place within five working days of the move.
