Long-distance move Berlin – Utrecht: route & duration

Route and process
From Moabit to the Dom: a schedule for your Utrecht move
One route, one team
A move to Utrecht is a move to another EU country – there is no customs clearance for your household goods. From our base in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) it is 636 road kilometres: via the A2 to Bad Oeynhausen, the A30 past Osnabrück to the border and, in the Netherlands, via the A1 near Deventer and Amersfoort and the A28 to Utrecht. Pure driving time for the lorry: around eight and a half hours plus breaks.
With loading and unloading, that usually means two working days; we plan an overnight stay or two drivers and then give you a fixed price. In Utrecht we check the zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissiezone) and the new rules for lorries in the Binnenstad (city centre) in advance, because the choice of vehicle depends on them. Our liability for your household goods is governed by the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³); additional insurance is possible. More about our services can be found under Private move.

How the journey to Utrecht works
Four steps to assembly
First we survey your flat in Berlin – on site or by video – and record the volume and special items. You then receive the quote with a fixed price and date. On moving day we load, drive via the A2 and A30 to the Netherlands and reassemble in Utrecht. Our liability for your household goods is governed by the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). Whether the lorry may enter the zero-emission zone and where it can load, we clarify with you beforehand.

Schedule
for Utrecht
A move to the Netherlands involves more than the journey: deregistration in Berlin, an appointment booked online with the Gemeente Utrecht (municipality) within five days of the move, and checking whether your street has delivery time windows or a lorry limit. Pets (EU pet passport, rabies vaccination) and any car you bring also belong on the list. After moving in come the BSN, health insurance and, if applicable, registration with the RDW. Further information on long routes can be found under Long-distance moves.

Common questions
Customs and import rules for moving to the Netherlands
As the Netherlands and Germany are both EU members, conventional customs checks and import duties on household goods do not apply when moving to Utrecht. Nevertheless, you should keep a complete inventory list, especially if you are taking valuable items such as artworks or vehicles. For cars there is also an obligation to re-register with the Dutch vehicle registration authority RDW after the change of residence; the RDW sets out the details.
If you are taking pets, you need an EU pet passport and valid proof of rabies vaccination. Separate rules apply to certain goods such as weapons or prescription medicines, which we are happy to explain in the consultation. This way you avoid unpleasant surprises during your long-distance move.
Registration and formalities in Utrecht
After your move to Utrecht, you must register with the municipality (Gemeente Utrecht) within five days and will receive your personal BSN (citizen service number), which is essential for a bank account, employment contract and health insurance. Bring your ID, tenancy or purchase agreement and any original certificates you have; the municipality accepts German certificates without a sworn translation. Whether you need to take out Dutch health insurance depends, among other things, on whether you work in the Netherlands; clarify this with your health insurer in advance.
The housing market in Utrecht is in high demand, which is why we recommend securing a tenancy agreement early and signing it before the moving date if possible. Also allow enough time to transfer internet, electricity and water connections. Our team will gladly support you with a checklist for all the necessary official errands.

From Berlin across Germany and to the Netherlands
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive throughout Germany and abroad, including to the Netherlands – Utrecht is one of the destinations we serve on request. Destinations with their own page can be found in the locations overview, and more on long routes under Long-distance moves.
Utrecht: the municipality's rules for the removal van
The municipality of Utrecht has its own page on traffic rules for removal vans. For areas without fixed delivery times (venstertijden) you can apply for an exemption permit; the form is on the municipality's online counter. The page does not state costs or processing time. Where delivery times apply in an area, the move must take place within those times.
- According to the municipality, you do not have to pay parking fees in parking bays while loading and unloading.
- A road closure is only permitted if there is no other way; you coordinate it at least ten working days in advance with the Tijdelijke Verkeersmaatregelen Utrecht department (temporary traffic measures) ([email protected] or 14 030).
- In some streets there are restrictions on length, width, height or axle load.
- Entrances, exits and doors must be kept clear; the van must be clearly visible with signs or red-and-white barriers, and pedestrians and cyclists must be able to pass safely.
The zero-emission zone also applies in the centre. According to the city of Utrecht, the fine for lorries is 320 euros. If the removal lorry is not allowed to enter, it can stop at park-and-ride sites on the edge of the city. For removal vehicles, the RDW specifies an exemption for 100 euros, which is valid in all zone municipalities until 1 January 2030 at the latest. More about the city in the guide to Utrecht.
Utrecht: Binnenstad rules and registration for newcomers
Utrecht's Binnenstad is getting stricter traffic rules. According to the city, vehicles over 7,500 kg gross weight are no longer allowed in; in a large part of the Binnenstad the limit is 3,500 kg. From 1 January 2027, lorries over ten metres in length (including trailer) may no longer enter. In the pedestrian zone, loading and unloading is permitted from 6 to 11 am until 1 May 2028. You apply for exemptions via the municipality's online counter. According to the city, exemptions already granted and those applied for in 2026 are valid until 1 January 2030.
Registration is also handled by the municipality. According to the Gemeente Utrecht, anyone moving from abroad books an appointment online within five days of the move. You need to bring valid ID, the tenancy or purchase agreement and, if available, original certificates; without a sworn translation, only documents in English, German and French are accepted. Registration counts from the start of the tenancy and can take up to four weeks. You then receive your citizen service number (BSN).
This is described in detail in the guide for newcomers to Utrecht. If you are comparing several cities, the long-distance move to Tilburg describes a similar route with its own zone rules, which we also go through with you in advance.
