Long-distance move Berlin – Maastricht: route process & schedule

From Berlin to Maastricht
Long-distance move to Maastricht – 667 km to the Maas
Guide
A move to Maastricht takes you to the capital of the province of Limburg, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, on both banks of the Maas between Belgium and Germany. Because the Netherlands is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. More important are registration with the Gemeente and access to the city centre, where a zero-emission zone has applied since 2025. What we handle on private moves is under Home move.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 667 km via the A2, A1 and A4 to Aachen and on via the A76 and A79. By lorry that takes about 9.5 hours including breaks; with loading and unloading we usually plan two days. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including for the return route from Maastricht to Berlin. Enquiries on 01625978461.

Your quote for Maastricht – after a survey
See first, then calculate
What your move to Maastricht costs depends on volume, floor, access and the roughly 667 km route. We look at your household goods – at your home in Berlin or by video – and then quote a written fixed price, whether the destination is in Wyck or in Céramique.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

Our part in your move to Maastricht
From Moabit to Maastricht
We have no branch in Maastricht; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is a flat in Wyck or a house in Céramique. The Gemeente (municipality) issues a temporary parking permit for the move by appointment at the Gemeenteloket; in the city centre a zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissiezone) also applies to vans and lorries – we clarify both in advance. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. Places with their own pages are listed under Locations.

Not much to move? Part load!
A part load is worth it if only a little needs to go to Maastricht: your items use free load space on a tour heading that way. You pay less than for a lorry of your own, but need to be flexible on the delivery day. Well packed, single items travel safely too.

From
planning to assembly
A long-distance move to Maastricht has its own steps: deregistering in Berlin, registering with the Gemeente within five days, the parking permit at the Gemeenteloket and the question of whether the removal lorry may enter the zero-emission zone of the Binnenstad (city centre). On top of that comes the route of around 667 km via Aachen. This guide puts the steps in order – details on city life are in the Maastricht guide.

Common questions
No customs, but registration and a BSN: formalities in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is an EU member, so your belongings do not have to be declared at customs. What matters are the registration obligations: in Berlin you deregister if you are not moving into a new home in Germany – at the earliest one week before and at the latest two weeks after moving out. If you stay longer than four months, according to the Gemeente Maastricht you have yourself entered in the BRP (Personal Records Database) within five days; registration is free of charge, and you receive your citizen service number (BSN).
For the appointment at the GemeenteLoket, bring a valid ID and proof of your home, such as the tenancy agreement. If you are staying for a shorter time, you register in the Register Niet-Ingezetenen (non-residents' register). Your EU driving licence remains valid. If you have questions, you can reach us on 01625978461.
Route, driving time and arrival in the Binnenstad
The route runs via the A2 towards the Ruhr area, via the Kamener Kreuz interchange onto the A1 and the A4 to Aachen, and on via the A76 and A79 to Maastricht. At around 667 km and about 9.5 hours' driving time including breaks, a single driver stays just under the daily limit; with loading and unloading we plan two days. Since 1 July 2026, a lorry toll (vrachtwagenheffing) has also applied in the Netherlands.
Since 1 January 2025, a zero-emission zone has applied in the Binnenstad: vans and lorries with petrol, diesel or LPG engines below emission class 5 may not enter, and exemptions are granted by the RDW (Dutch vehicle authority). We clarify during planning which vehicle we use and whether an exemption is needed. More on the neighbourhoods is in the Maastricht guide.

Maastricht: registering at the GemeenteLoket after moving in
Anyone moving to Maastricht from abroad for longer than four months must, according to the Gemeente Maastricht, register with the municipality within five days. Registration is free of charge. After registering online, you receive the appointment confirmation for the GemeenteLoket by email; the appointment also covers a partner and children moving with you, but each family member needs their own form.
For the appointment, bring a valid ID and proof of your home, namely the original tenancy or purchase agreement (printed and signed by both parties) or the original consent of the main occupant. A birth certificate is required if you were not born in the Netherlands; for events abroad, marriage, divorce or death certificates and your children's birth certificates are also needed. Documents that are not in Dutch, English, German or French must be translated by a translator sworn in the Netherlands, and foreign certificates should, where possible, be legalised or bear an apostille.
According to the municipality, it processes the registration within four weeks and confirms it by letter. Nationals of EU and EEA states and Switzerland do not need a residence permit. If you stay for less than four months, you register at a counter for the Register Niet-Ingezetenen; for Maastricht, the municipality names the counter in Heerlen. Tips on the journey itself are in the guide Long-distance move to the Netherlands.
Maastricht: zero-emission zone in the city centre for vans and lorries
Since 1 January 2025, a zero-emission zone for certain commercial vehicles has applied in Maastricht's city centre. According to the Gemeente Maastricht, vans and lorries with petrol, diesel or LPG engines with an emission class below 5 may no longer enter the city centre; vehicles with electric or hydrogen drive remain permitted, and cars are not covered by the rule. Since 1 July 2024, you apply for exemptions (Ontheffing) centrally from the RDW.
The national website opwegnaarzes.nl sets out the rules in detail. For vans up to 3,500 kilograms: emission class 4 or lower has no access. For lorries over 3.5 tonnes first registered from 1 January 2025, removal vans are listed among the vehicle types exempt until 1 January 2030. A vehicle's emission class and date of first registration can be checked via ovi.rdw.nl. Enforcement is by number plate recognition, and the site lists fines for 2026 of 130 euros for vans and 320 euros for lorries.
According to the municipality's policy rules, you apply for a temporary parking permit (tijdelijke ontheffing/vergunning) for the removal van at the GemeenteLoket; it is valid for one day up to a maximum of three weeks. Book the appointment early so that the permit is in place for moving day. How we plan the route and breaks is in our service overview Long-distance move; another Dutch destination is described in Long-distance move to Nijmegen.
