Moving to France: Process & Tips

From Berlin to France
Moving to France: route, péage and parking in the city
To Paris, Strasbourg or Lyon
A move to France requires more planning than a regional change of flat, because the distances are long: by road it is around 1,050 km from Berlin to Paris and around 756 km to Strasbourg. On request, our team at Beste Umzug Unternehmen takes care of packing, transport and furniture assembly at the destination. Within the EU there is no customs duty on your household goods; what matters is a realistic schedule, the parking permit in front of the new flat and the tolls on French motorways. That way you can concentrate on your new life in France.
Our private move services include packing, transport and reassembly on request, on international routes too. We are liable for your belongings under the German Commercial Code (HGB); it is best to take valuables with you yourself, and additional insurance is available on request. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); places with their own pages can be found under Locations. We agree the process from loading day to arrival with you in advance.

What counts on the journey to France
Route, tolls, parking
With long-distance moves to France, three things determine the process: the route, which usually leads via Belgium or via Strasbourg, the driver's driving times and parking at the destination, which in French cities often requires a permit. We clarify these points before you book. After that you receive a fixed price that also includes péage and lorry tolls. We are liable for your belongings under the HGB, limited to €620 per cubic metre.

Moving
& transport from a single source
A move to France covers two areas: formalities and transport. For EU citizens there is no general obligation to register in France; your car, health insurance and rental deposit are explained in our checklist for emigrating to France. This guide is about the transport: route and driving time, péage, parking permits in the city and low-emission zones. That way you start well prepared in your new home.

Frequently asked questions about moving to France
No customs, but a long route: the journey to France
As France is a member of the EU, there is no customs clearance and no import duty on your private household goods; you do not need certificates of personal use for this. What is decisive is the route: from Berlin it is around 1,050 km to Paris, usually via the A2 and Aachen, then through Belgium and on along the French A2 and A1. To Strasbourg it is around 756 km via the A9, A4 and A5. Most French motorways are subject to tolls.
Because a driver may drive for no more than 9 hours a day, Paris cannot be reached by lorry in one day; we plan with an overnight stop or a second driver. France has no obligation to register for EU citizens like the one in Germany. Your car, health insurance and deposit are explained in our emigration checklist. That way your long-distance move goes ahead without bureaucratic surprises.
Process, costs and special features in France
The process of a move to France begins with an inventory and cost calculation, followed by packing your household goods. This is followed by transport along the agreed route, with an overnight stop or a second driver. The costs depend on distance, volume, tolls and the additional services you want, and are agreed as a fixed price after the survey.
A special feature is parking in city centres: in Paris you apply online for the removal van permit at least 15 days in advance, one each for moving out and moving in; you enter the lorry's number plate once it has been approved. In other cities this is handled by the mairie (town hall). Further information on our international services can be found under Long-distance moves.
