Emigrating to France: Moving Checklist

Moving to France
Moving to France: fewer offices, different rules
No registration office
A move to France at first surprises many emigrants in a positive way: there are no customs papers for household goods, no duty to register like at the German registration office (Bürgeramt), and EU citizens do not need a carte de séjour (residence card). You prove your residence there with your tenancy agreement and an electricity or phone bill (justificatif de domicile). The effort lies rather in the carte grise (vehicle registration certificate) for your car, health insurance and finding a flat. We accompany your long-distance move from planning to furniture assembly in Paris, Lyon or Provence and give you a fixed price after the survey.
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and transport your household goods to France – as a complete move or as a partial move with a shared load; more on long routes under long-distance moves. On request, our private move includes packing, dismantling and storage, so that you can concentrate on your fresh start in France. We are liable for your belongings under the statutory rules (HGB). What we take on for your move to France
Transport from Berlin
We take care of your move abroad to France, from packing in Germany to assembly at your destination. Within the EU there is no customs duty; what matters more are practical questions such as access to older buildings in Paris, a furniture lift for narrow stairwells or the low-emission zones of large cities. We calculate the long-distance move at a fixed price after the survey; statutory liability under the HGB applies to your belongings, and additional insurance is available on request. One contact person accompanies you throughout the entire move.

How we support you
Within the EU, nobody checks your belongings at the border to France. An inventory list is still worthwhile: for insurance, in case of damage and for unpacking in your new flat.
Reliable moving service
Safe handling
Clear communication
Structured move planning
Flexible support
Arrived in France
Part loads for small volumes
For smaller loads we offer a shared load: your household goods travel to France together with other consignments. This suits you if you initially live in furnished accommodation (location meublée) or only take some furniture and boxes, and it saves costs if you have a little flexibility on the delivery day.

Your
move – fully organised
An international move involves more than transport – in France, however, fewer dealings with the authorities than many expect: there is no duty to register at the town hall, and EU citizens do not need a carte de séjour. What matters instead is registering with the health insurance system (Assurance Maladie), the carte grise for the car and the tax return in France. Our private move service covers the transport including packing. That way you keep track of all the steps.

Frequently asked questions about moving to France
Formalities in France: what you need – and what you don't
As France is a member of the EU, there are no customs charges or customs papers for private household goods. An inventory list still makes sense, but for insurance and unpacking, not for the border. Special rules only apply to special cases such as weapons.
Unlike in Germany, there is no general duty to register with the municipality (mairie) in France. EU citizens may also stay for longer than three months without a residence permit, as long as they work, study or have sufficient means and health insurance; a carte de séjour is voluntary. If you take a car with you, you apply online to the ANTS for French registration (carte grise), for which the quitus fiscal from the tax office and a certificate of conformity (COC), among other things, are required.
Costs and process of a move to France
The costs of a move to France depend on the distance, moving volume and the service you want. With us, you receive a fixed price after the survey in which transport, packing and assembly are listed individually. For smaller loads, a shared load is recommended, which is considerably cheaper than a complete move with your own lorry.
The typical process starts with a free survey or online assessment of your household goods, followed by scheduling and professional packing. On moving day we take care of dismantling, loading and safe transport across the border to your front door in France. Finally, the furniture is assembled and set up so that you feel at home straight away.
