New in Maastricht: BRP Resident Parking, Bulky Waste

Maastricht for newcomers
New on the Maas: How to Settle In Well in Maastricht
The first few weeks
Maastricht is the seat of the provincial government of Limburg and borders Belgium directly to the west and south. After Amsterdam, the city has the most Rijksmonumenten (national monuments) in the Netherlands; the entire centre, including the Wyck district, is a protected conservation area. Maastricht University and several universities of applied sciences make the city international. This guide sorts out your first weeks: BRP registration, BSN, flat-hunting, parking and bulky waste. We handle the transport as a home removal.
We have no branch in the Netherlands: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and carry out moves to Maastricht and back. Within the EU your household goods need no customs declaration. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), with additional insurance on request. The zero-emission zone and the route are described in our long-distance moving guide for Maastricht; other destinations under long-distance moves.

Before Moving Day in Maastricht
Access, old building, date
We come from Berlin and bring your household goods to Maastricht. Before moving day we clarify with you where the vehicle may stop in front of the new address – space is tight in the Binnenstad within the Singels, and a zero-emission zone applies to delivery vans –, how narrow the stairs and doors are in the listed old building, and whether a furniture lift makes sense. We set the price after the survey (fixed price), and your belongings are covered under the HGB. You take care of the BRP registration yourself; we schedule the move-in so that the five-day deadline is easy to meet.

Shared Load to Maastricht
If you move to Maastricht with little furniture for your studies or a first job, you do not have to pay for a whole lorry. With a shared load you share the loading space with other consignments heading for the Netherlands; we agree the delivery day in advance, and here too your belongings are covered under the HGB.

Maastricht
for newcomers
When you are new in Maastricht, many questions arise at once: how does BRP registration work, and which documents do I need to have translated? What applies if I stay less than four months? Can I get a parking permit in the Binnenstad, and what does it cost? Where do I dispose of boxes and bulky waste? We have summarised the information from the municipality of Maastricht below. For the move itself we advise you on timing, access and packing.

From Berlin to the Maas – and Back Again
Whether a long-distance move to the Netherlands or back to Germany: we come from Berlin-Moabit and plan every journey ourselves. You can find destinations with their own page in the locations overview, and more details on long distances under long-distance moves.
Registration in Maastricht: BRP Entry, BSN and Deadlines
In the Netherlands you register your residence with the municipality in the BRP (Basisregistratie Personen, the personal records database). The municipality of Maastricht distinguishes between two routes.
- Moving from another Dutch municipality: you can report the move from four weeks before until no later than five days after the move, ideally with DigiD. If you report later, your reporting date counts as the official moving date. Reporting is free of charge. You need a copy of your valid ID and, for a rented flat, the complete tenancy agreement signed by you and the landlord.
- Moving from abroad for more than four months: you must register within five days, also free of charge. First you fill in an online form, followed by an appointment at the GemeenteLoket for an identity check.
According to the municipality, for the appointment you bring, among other things, the signed tenancy agreement or the landlord's consent, your birth certificate if you were born abroad and, if you do not come from the EU, proof from the IND of lawful residence. Documents in languages other than Dutch, English, German or French must be translated by a sworn translator in the Netherlands. The municipality processes the registration within four weeks. If you stay less than four months, the RNI desk in Heerlen is responsible.
The route from Germany is explained in our long-distance moving guide for Maastricht; for cross-border topics see international moves.
Living in Maastricht: Parking in Binnenstad and Wyck, Bulky Waste
Maastricht divides resident parking into two sectors. According to the municipality, the Binnenstad covers the area within the Singels, i.e. Centrum and Wyck; there is at most one permit per household there if no private parking space is available. In the overig gebied (other area) outside the Singels, there is no second permit if a private parking space is available.
- Requirements: BRP registration in Maastricht, residence in the area applied for, and a vehicle in your name or as a lease or company car. The permit is tied to a number plate, which you can change via the 2Park web app. Apply online with DigiD via the E-Loket; without DigiD, make an appointment at the GemeenteLoket on 14 043.
- Costs: the tariff page gives a parking tax (parkeerbelasting) of €30.08 per month in the Binnenstad (Centrum West and Centrum Oost), and €5.03 for the first and €7.56 for the second permit in the overig gebied.
- When moving: cancel the old permit up to seven days beforehand; you may need a new one.
You take bulky waste (grofvuil) to the Milieupark or have it collected by making an appointment with DigiD, in Maastricht only Wednesday to Friday. The municipality quotes €29.80 per hour for collection plus €22 processing for the first 100 kilos. More about the neighbourhoods is in the Maastricht moving guide.
