Living in Koblenz: Housing Districts & Registration

Koblenz for New Residents
Koblenz: The Rhine, the Moselle and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
Settling in, not just moving
With a good 113,000 inhabitants, Koblenz is the third-largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate after Mainz and Ludwigshafen. The city lies at the Deutsches Eck (German Corner), where the Moselle flows into the Rhine, and celebrated its 2,000th anniversary in 1992. Since 2002 Koblenz has been the northern gateway to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site; since 2010 the Rhine cable car has run up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. The city is one of the state's five regional centres and home to numerous federal and state authorities; Bonn and Wiesbaden are each about 55 kilometres away.
For newcomers, the first tasks are registration, flat-hunting and – if you have a car – the resident parking permit. We clarify steep access roads such as in Ehrenbreitstein or on the Karthause and narrow lanes in the old town before moving day. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Koblenz. The route from Berlin – around 604 km – is described on our page Moving Berlin – Koblenz.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Koblenz
Slopes, old town, parking
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Koblenz business. That is why we ask detailed questions before moving day: is the flat in the old town, in the managed parking area, on the Karthause or on the right bank of the Rhine in Ehrenbreitstein? Is there a lift, is a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) needed? Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). We give you the price after the survey as a fixed price – with no renegotiation on moving day.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Koblenz
30 Districts on the Rhine and Moselle: Where Newcomers Live in Koblenz
Koblenz is divided into 30 statistical districts; nine of them form eight local districts with their own local advisory council, such as Arenberg-Immendorf, Güls, Rübenach or Stolzenfels. At the centre are the old town and the Südliche Vorstadt with the main station. According to Wikipedia, the Karthause on the heights is the largest district.
On the right bank of the Rhine lie Ehrenbreitstein with its fortress and the Mother Beethoven House, Pfaffendorf, Horchheim and Asterstein; to the left of the Moselle lie Lützel, Metternich and Güls. The districts in the south between the Moselle and the Rhine are partly wooded and are considered the city's green lung. Where you live determines your bus line, parking zone and carrying distance – we plan vehicle and team to suit the address.
Working, Studying and Leisure in Koblenz
Koblenz is home to many authorities, including the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support, the Bundeswehr Central Hospital, the Federal Archives, the Struktur- und Genehmigungsdirektion Nord and several state offices. The insurance group Debeka has its headquarters here; there are also companies from the mechanical engineering and automotive supply industries, software firms, utilities and banks. You can study at the University of Koblenz and at the RheinMoselCampus of Koblenz University of Applied Sciences.
For leisure there is Ehrenbreitstein Fortress with the State Museum, the Rhine cable car, the Deutsches Eck and the grounds of the 2011 Federal Garden Show. There are wine estates in Ehrenbreitstein, Moselweiß, Güls and Lay; in July the Horizonte world music festival takes place at the fortress. We do not quote specific rents because we have no reliable current source.
Useful for daily life: according to the city, the central bus station is in front of the main station, and there is also the Koblenz Mitte railway stop. The main station lies on the left Rhine line between Bonn and Mainz. You can swim in the Beatusbad, the school pool on the Karthause or the Oberwerth open-air pool.
What a Move to Koblenz Costs
With us, small moves are possible from €375 – that applies to 1-room flats. Larger households pay correspondingly more: 2 rooms from €579, 3 rooms from €889, 4 rooms from €1,329. For a house or a villa there is no flat rate, but always an individual quote. If you are moving further away, long-distance moves cost from €3.90/km. The quickest way is a free survey.
What the price depends on
First of all, the volume of your household counts. The distance is calculated from €3.90/km. A floor without a lift means more effort, as does a required parking restriction zone. We additionally offer furniture assembly and shared load.

Registering in Koblenz: Citizens' Office, Deadlines and Landlord Confirmation
Anyone moving to Koblenz must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz). For this you need the landlord confirmation: under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, your landlord or their representative issues it and is obliged to cooperate with the registration. If they refuse the confirmation, you must inform the registration authority without delay.
In Koblenz the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) at Gymnasialstraße 6, 56068 Koblenz, is responsible. According to the city, you can complete a registration or change of address within Germany online, without any appointment at the office. It is different for registration from abroad and for a secondary residence: for these the city portal requires an appointment.
- You book appointments online via termine-reservieren.de or by phone via the public authority number 115 (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm).
- If no appointment is available, you can send urgent matters by email to [email protected].
- The citizens' office issues registration certificates on site or online.
It is best to plan your registration for the first week after moving in. The city explains which further documents your case requires on its registration page. You can find more about the neighbourhoods and costs in our Koblenz guide and on the page on moving in Koblenz.
Daily Life in Koblenz: Resident Parking Permit, Bus and Rail, Childcare
If you own a car in Koblenz, you should check before moving in whether the street is in the managed parking area. The resident parking permit is issued by the citizens' office. According to the City of Koblenz, it requires a main residence in the managed parking part of the city, permanent use of the vehicle and a driving licence valid in Germany. In addition, no parking space may be available to you; tenants prove this with a current negative parking space certificate from the owner.
- The annual fee is vehicle length (m) × vehicle width (m) × 23.40 euros, and the permit is valid for one year.
- An appointment is required for the first application. According to the city, if documents are missing there is a provisional permit for four weeks, provided the vehicle registration document is available.
- Bring: a valid ID, driving licence, vehicle registration document and the negative parking space certificate.
For public transport, the city names the central bus station in front of the main station and the Koblenz Mitte railway stop; the city's geoportal shows the bus and rail stops in the centre. For childcare, the city distinguishes between day nurseries and childminders, and the youth welfare office is the point of contact for allocation of places and deadlines. If you want to load directly in front of the building on moving day, you will find more information on our page on the parking restriction zone. Also ask the citizens' office whether your street has managed parking before you apply for the permit.
