Living in Trier: local districts bollards and registration

Living in Trier
From the Porta Nigra to Tarforst: Trier for newcomers
Areas and daily life
Moving to Trier means moving to a city founded more than 2,000 years ago as Augusta Treverorum and regarded as one of the oldest in Germany. The city is divided into 19 local districts (Ortsbezirke) – from the old town around the Porta Nigra and Hauptmarkt to Tarforst on the heights, where the university is located. The border with Luxembourg at Wasserbillig is about 15 km away. We are based in Berlin and plan your move from the survey to assembly – see Private move.
It is around 720 road kilometres from Berlin-Moabit to Trier, which with driving and rest periods means more than one day of driving – more about the route under Long-distance moves. At the destination, the city centre is what counts: the pedestrian zone is protected by bollards, and according to the city, loading and unloading is possible during the delivery window from 6 to 11 am. We pack, transport and assemble your furniture, are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB) and give you a fixed price after the survey.

How we plan the route to Trier
Delivery window, bollards, driving day
For a move to Trier, we clarify in advance which local district the new flat is in: in the old town, bollards and delivery times apply, while on the heights such as Tarforst or in Moselle villages such as Ehrang there is usually more space. Our liability for your household goods is governed by the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³); additional insurance is possible. We give you the fixed price after the survey. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive throughout Germany; the route is described on our page Berlin–Trier.

After
moving in to Trier
Besides boxes, a move to Trier also involves official errands: registration within two weeks with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), possibly nursery registration and a residents' parking permit for one of the three residents' parking zones. If you commute to Luxembourg, you should compare routes early; proximity to the neighbouring country is considered one reason for the city's growth. For the private move itself, we plan the delivery window and bollard access in advance.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Trier
Trier's districts at a glance
Trier is divided into 19 local districts. Mitte/Gartenfeld, with the Roman old town and the pedestrian zone around the Porta Nigra and Hauptmarkt, is ideal for anyone who wants to live without a car – but bollards and delivery times apply there for the removal van. On the heights east of the old town lie Kürenz and Tarforst; Trier University has its campus in Tarforst, so many students live here. Families often look at Feyen/Weismark, Heiligkreuz or Mariahof.
Olewig, in the valley of the Olewiger Bach, combines wine growing with proximity to the city. On the left bank of the Moselle lie Trier-West/Pallien, Euren and Zewen; between Ehrang and Zewen the western railway line is due to be reactivated for passenger traffic, mainly for commuters to Luxembourg. Ehrang/Quint and Pfalzel also offer quiet living on the Moselle.
Housing market and moving costs in Trier
Trier's housing market is strongly shaped by its universities: around 10,200 people study at Trier University, plus the Hochschule Trier with its Schneidershof campus. At the start of term, small flats in Kürenz and Tarforst are in particularly high demand. We do not quote an average rent because we have no verified source for it; compare current listings.
The cost of a move to Trier depends on the distance, the size of the flat and accessibility – for example a flat in the pedestrian zone or floors without a lift. It is around 720 km from Berlin; how we drive the route is explained under Long-distance move. We give you the fixed price after the survey, whether you are coming from Berlin or another federal state.

Trier: moving into the pedestrian zone with a delivery window and bollard access
Trier's city centre is protected by fixed and retractable bollards. According to the city of Trier, anyone wishing to drive into the pedestrian zone generally needs an exemption permit, with or without bollards. For moves, however, there is a practical route: during the delivery window from 6 to 11 am, loading and unloading is possible without an exemption permit, including in front of the flat. The city explicitly recommends using this delivery window for moves. Between 11 am and 6 am the bollards are up. Plan the process so that loading and unloading is completed before 11 am.
If the move can only take place during the restricted period, an exemption permit is required. Those who do not have a parking space normally cannot apply for one, but according to the city, moves are an exception. For individual cases the city quotes 20 euros per day, and processing takes up to 14 days plus postal delivery. Confirm beforehand whether this rate applies to your move. Among other things, you need the registration certificate Part 1 (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil 1) and the front and back of your identity card.
In bollard areas, access opens by mobile phone call for one-off journeys such as a move. In the event of faults, the fault service can be reached around the clock on 0651/4627770. More on stopping zones: Parking restriction zone.
Trier: residents' parking zones, extended pedestrian zone and registration
Trier's pedestrian zone is changing: according to the city, it is being extended at the Domfreihof and around Konstantinstraße and Neustraße. Public parking spaces have been removed in Neustraße and the traffic routing has changed. At the Domfreihof there are access barriers at five locations, and at the Hauptmarkt the bollards at Stockplatz have been in operation since 24 June 2026. In total, the security concept around the Hauptmarkt comprises five lines of bollards. Check the removal van's route again shortly before the date.
Since July 2020 Trier has had three residents' parking zones. According to the city, the residents' parking permit allows free long-term parking in the respective zone. No-stopping restrictions are monitored by the traffic enforcement service of the public order office (Ordnungsamt), so anyone wishing to secure a space for the lorry should clarify the signage in good time. According to the city, emergency services, on-call doctors and refuse collection may enter around the clock. If you have questions, the city administration can help (Am Augustinerhof, tel. 0651/718-0).
After moving in: registration must take place within two weeks (§ 17 Federal Registration Act, BMG), and the landlord must confirm the move-in with the landlord confirmation (§ 19 BMG). Plan both before the moving date. How we plan moves to the Moselle is described under Moves in Trier, and help for young households under Student move.
