Moving to Kaiserslautern: costs process & districts

From Berlin to Kaiserslautern
Moving to Kaiserslautern: Barbarossa's city by the Palatinate Forest
Tips & costs
A move to Kaiserslautern takes you to the north-western edge of the Palatinate Forest, to the fifth-largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate. The industrial and university city traces its origins to an imperial palace of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Today it is shaped by the Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University, research institutes and the Kaiserslautern Military Community – the largest US military community outside the USA. Besides the city centre there are nine local districts (Ortsbezirke). For your private move we clarify access and floor in advance.
From our base in Berlin-Moabit it is around 655 km to Kaiserslautern, driving via the A9, A4, A5 and A63. For the lorry we reckon on about 9.5 hours including a break and usually plan the move over two days. In Kaiserslautern you register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); your landlord issues the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). We also handle the reverse route from Kaiserslautern to Berlin. Further information: Moving Berlin – Kaiserslautern.

Your
move – fully organised
A move to Kaiserslautern raises many questions: city centre or local district, how long does the permit for the parking restriction take, how long must the zone be and can you re-register without an appointment? This guide presents the city centre and the nine local districts from Einsiedlerhof to Siegelbach and summarises what the City of Kaiserslautern says about parking restrictions and the Bürgercenter (citizens' centre). Then there is the journey of around 655 km from Berlin. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Kaiserslautern
City centre and nine local districts
Kaiserslautern consists of the city centre and nine local districts: Dansenberg, Einsiedlerhof, Erfenbach, Erlenbach, Erzhütten/Wiesenthalerhof, Hohenecken, Mölschbach, Morlautern and Siegelbach. The city centre was traditionally divided into five colour-coded “fifths” – old house-number plates still show the colours today.
To the south and east, wooded hills such as the Betzenberg border directly on the city centre; some of the local districts lie in the middle of the Palatinate Forest and are characterised more by detached houses. In the city centre, apartment buildings without a lift are common. For the move, therefore, the specific address is what counts: we clarify floor, stairwell and space for the lorry during the survey. Our private moving service adapts to this.
University, Betzenberg and the Military Community
Kaiserslautern has two higher education institutions: the Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) and Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences. Opel has been producing in the city since 1966, and there are also research institutions. The Kaiserslautern Military Community comprises around 40,000 military personnel and civilians; its members are not counted in the official population figure. We do not give specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
On the Betzenberg, 1. FC Kaiserslautern plays in the Fritz-Walter-Stadion; the city is also home to the garden show with a large dinosaur exhibition and the Japanese Garden. If you are arriving for the start of a semester or a new job, fix your moving day early: according to the city, the parking restriction needs 8 to 10 days to process. Long distances from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.
All prices at a glance
In brief: 1 room from €359, 2 rooms from €584, 3 rooms from €894, 4 rooms from €1,299. Houses and villas are quoted individually. For long-distance moves we charge from €4.10/km. We are happy to clarify all further details in person during a free survey.
What makes a move more or less expensive?
A large volume means more effort and therefore higher costs. The distance, which we charge from €4.10/km, as well as the floor and lift also noticeably affect the price. A parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) ensures smooth processes but costs extra. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load can be booked at any time.

Parking restriction for your move in Kaiserslautern: application, fees and signs
In Kaiserslautern you apply for the moving parking restriction at the road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde), Benzinoring 1, 67657 Kaiserslautern. You need the application “Ausnahmegenehmigung zur Aufstellung von absoluten Haltverboten” (exemption permit for setting up no-stopping zones); appointments are booked via the city's online portal. According to the City of Kaiserslautern, you should expect a processing time of about 8 to 10 days. The signs must be in place four days before the move; the parking restriction becomes legally binding after three full days' notice, and the day of setting up does not count.
The city lists these fees for the exemption permit: up to 3 days €25.00, up to 1 week €30.00, up to 2 weeks €45.00, up to 3 weeks €55.00 and up to 1 month €65.00.
The signs need supplementary plates showing the area, date and time in accordance with DIN 1451-2; handwritten or printed paper signs are not permitted. Document the setting up carefully with time-stamped photos and a written record, including the number plates of cars already parked. Measure the zone as the vehicle length plus about 4 to 5 metres; for a move between two addresses a second zone may be needed. The authority answers questions on 0631 365-4347 or -4683 and at [email protected]. Read more about our service under Parking restriction zone.
Re-registering at the Bürgercenter Kaiserslautern: deadline, documents and appointment
According to the city, anyone moving within Kaiserslautern must re-register within two weeks of the move. Late registration is an administrative offence and can be punished with a warning fine or a fine. The responsible office is the Bürgercenter (citizens' centre), Willy-Brandt-Platz 1, 67657 Kaiserslautern.
You must bring the passports or ID cards of all family members, the landlord's written confirmation of moving in (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) and, if vehicles are registered in your name, the vehicle registration certificate for the change of address. You must present your ID card when re-registering so that the address can be changed. Do not pack these documents in the removal van; keep them to hand.
According to the city, you can also come without an appointment, but you must then expect long waiting times, especially on Mondays. Appointments are booked via the city's online appointment system; this is particularly worthwhile if you cannot come on a Monday. You can reach the Bürgercenter on 0631 365-2538 or at [email protected]; the city gives the processing hours as Monday to Wednesday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Thursday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and Friday 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. More for newcomers can be found in the guide to living in Kaiserslautern and on our Kaiserslautern location page.
