Moving to the Czech Republic: customs registration & process

Customs and formalities
From deregistration in Berlin to registration in the Czech Republic
Paperwork in order
A move to the Czech Republic is formally simpler than many people think: within the EU there is no customs clearance for household goods, and as an EU citizen you need neither a visa nor a work permit. What remains is deregistration in Berlin, the registration certificate in the Czech Republic if you wish, and questions about your car and health insurance. We handle the transport from the survey to the handover of your furniture in Prague, Brno or another city; we give you the fixed price after the survey.
For private individuals and companies, we plan the transport to fit the date of deregistration and the key handover in the Czech Republic. Our liability for your household goods is governed by the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³); additional insurance is possible. Information about private moves can be found under Private move. If you have questions about organising your long-distance move to the Czech Republic, you can reach us by phone on 01625978461.

Transport and paperwork kept neatly apart
You handle the offices, we handle the lorry
With a move to the Czech Republic, the tasks are divided: you handle deregistration, registration and registering the car with the authorities, and we take care of packing, transport and assembly. To make both fit together, we align the loading day with your formalities. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive throughout Germany and abroad; destinations with their own page are listed in the locations overview. Our liability for your household goods is governed by the HGB.

Paperwork
before and after the move
A move abroad involves official errands in two places: deregistration in Berlin, and in the Czech Republic the voluntary registration for stays of more than three months and later the notification of any new address. On top of that come health insurance and, where applicable, the car. Further information on cross-border moves can be found on our page Long-distance moves. This helps you keep track.

Common questions
Customs and paperwork: what really applies
As the Czech Republic is a member of the European Union, there is no customs clearance for private household goods. You should take your identity card or passport, the deregistration certificate from Germany, proof of your new accommodation and your own inventory list. Separate rules apply to weapons, medicines or fireworks, and Czech registration rules apply to a car – clarify this in advance.
In the Czech Republic itself, you can apply to the Ministry of the Interior for a registration certificate if you stay more than three months. Details on documents and deadlines can be found further down this page.
Process: from loading day to delivery
The process of a move to the Czech Republic begins with a detailed inventory and cost calculation. We then plan packing, transport and delivery so that everything arrives safely and on time at your new home. Especially in cities such as Prague or Brno, reserving a parking space for the removal van early makes sense, as the city centres are often densely built up.
Linguistic and cultural differences should also be taken into account in planning, for example when communicating with landlords or authorities. Allow some buffer for appointments with authorities and landlords, and clarify in advance which language and which documents are expected.

These criteria determine the price
The price depends primarily on volume and distance – the latter is charged from €4.25/km. The floor and lift also affect the effort involved. Additional services such as furniture assembly and a part load can be booked.

From Berlin across Germany and to the neighbouring country
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive throughout Germany and abroad, including to the Czech Republic. In the locations overview you will find destinations with their own page, and more on long routes under Long-distance moves. For the Czech Republic we plan the route, toll and date individually.
Deregistration in Berlin and documents for the move to the Czech Republic
A move to the Czech Republic begins in Berlin. Under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG), you deregister with the registration authority when you move out and do not take up a new home in Germany. The deadline is two weeks after moving out, and deregistration is possible no earlier than one week before moving out. Plan the appointment around the loading day.
As for customs, there is little to do for your household goods within the EU: the customs administration states on zoll.de that goods for personal use may in principle be brought from another EU country without customs duties. The rules on removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) apply to moves from non-EU countries. Restrictions on medicines or fireworks remain in place.
The following checklist has proven useful before loading:
- valid passport or identity card (the Czech Republic accepts both for EU citizens)
- tenancy agreement or proof of ownership for the new address
- deregistration certificate from Germany
- your own inventory list as a guide for loading and unloading
During the survey we go through your rooms and agree time windows, packing service and loading; we travel from our depot in Berlin-Moabit. On request we also take care of packing fragile items. Details on prices can be found in our guide Moving to the Czech Republic: costs and planning.
Registering in the Czech Republic: registration certificate and change of address
The Czech Ministry of the Interior explains on mv.gov.cz that EU citizens enter with a valid passport or identity card without a visa and need neither a residence permit nor a work permit. For stays of more than three months, the conditions under EU law and the Czech Residence Act apply. Family members without an EU passport are assessed according to their own nationality and often need a visa.
According to the information portal ipc.gov.cz, if you stay more than three months you have the right to apply for a registration certificate (osvědčení o registraci). Each member state sets its own registration rules, so it is worth checking the ministry's page. The portal lists the documents for a change of address precisely: travel document, proof of accommodation and the completed form.
If you later move within the Czech Republic and stay longer than 180 days, according to ipc.gov.cz you report the new address within 30 working days to an office of the Ministry of the Interior. For holders of a registration certificate, the portal quotes CZK 200 for this. The portal itself points out that its articles do not replace the full text of the law. Check your case with the authority before the move. Our offer for long routes can be found under Long-distance move.
