Moving Berlin – Baden AG: Route Customs, Duration

From Berlin to Baden AG
Moving to Baden AG: the border on the High Rhine, arrival on the Limmat
Guide
A move to Baden in the canton of Aargau means more than transporting furniture: your household goods cross a customs border, because Switzerland is not part of the EU customs union. As removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) they remain duty-free if you move your residence to Switzerland and have used the items yourself for at least six months and continue to use them. For this you need Form 18.44, an inventory list and proof such as an employment or tenancy contract. This refers to Baden AG on the Limmat – not Baden-Baden and not Baden near Vienna. More on moves across the border under International move.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 821 km: via the A9, the A6 and the A81 into the Hegau and on main roads to the High Rhine, then into Aargau. By lorry that takes about 12.5 hours including breaks – more than one day's driving time, so with two drivers or an overnight stop. For your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB. After the survey we quote a fixed price; we answer questions on 01625978461.

Arrange a survey for your long-distance move to Switzerland. Afterwards we quote a fixed price in which the route, the LSVA (heavy vehicle charge) and border clearance are itemised. We go through the inventory list for customs with you at the same time. Call us on 01625978461.

What we take care of when you move to Baden
Transport from Berlin, formalities together
We are a removal company from Berlin-Moabit with no branch in Switzerland, and we drive our lorry all the way to Baden. We take care of packing, transport and assembly, and we time the border crossing within the opening hours of the customs office for commercial goods. You sign Form 18.44 yourself, and we compile the inventory list together during the survey. For your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

From
planning to assembly
A move abroad, including to Switzerland, touches on several topics: declaring your household goods to Swiss customs with Form 18.44, registering at the Stadtbüro Baden, the residence permit and health insurance. Then there are the car, insurance and choosing the transport. In Baden itself, the driving ban in the town centre and the closure of public parking spaces matter. Residential areas and neighbourhoods are described in the Baden moving guide.

Frequent questions
Customs and formalities when moving to Switzerland
For a move to Baden, as an EU citizen you need a complete inventory list and proof that you are moving your residence to Switzerland, such as an employment or tenancy contract. Swiss customs require Form 18.44; household goods remain duty-free if you have used them yourself for at least six months. We go through the list with you during the survey.
As an EU citizen you do not need to apply for a residence permit in advance: you register at the Stadtbüro within 14 days, and the cantonal Office for Migration and Integration then issues the permit. A car you have used for at least six months counts as removal goods; you need Swiss number plates from the Strassenverkehrsamt Aargau (road traffic office) after one year at the latest.
Route, costs and process to Baden
From Stromstraße in Moabit it is around 821 km: south on the A9, west on the A6 and on the A81 into the Hegau, then on main roads to the High Rhine and across the border into Aargau. The lorry needs about 12.5 hours including breaks. The costs depend on volume, floor and additional services such as packing, furniture assembly or interim storage; on top of that come the route, the LSVA and border clearance. After a free survey we quote a fixed price.
The process: survey and inventory list, a date to match the flat handover, packing and loading in Berlin, crossing the border on a working day. In Baden we unload and, on request, assemble the furniture. If the flat is in the town centre, we clarify access and the parking space closure with you beforehand.

Moves from Berlin – to Aargau too

Baden AG: clearing removal goods through customs with Form 18.44
This refers to Baden in the canton of Aargau, not Baden-Baden and not Baden near Vienna. For the duty-free import of household goods, collections, animals or a car, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) states: moving your residence to Switzerland is the most important condition. In addition, the items must have been used by you personally for at least six months and must continue to be used after import.
The procedure according to the BAZG: you fill in Form 18.44 (“Customs clearance of removal goods”) and present it to the customs office of entry. Clearance takes place during the opening hours of the customs offices for commercial goods, whose locations and times can be found at dst.bazg.admin.ch. People moving from the EU and EFTA states do not need an assurance of a residence permit. They can prove the move of residence with an employment contract, tenancy contract or deregistration confirmation from their country of origin.
According to the BAZG, a preliminary check of the file at least two working days before crossing the border is only offered by the Mendrisiotto (Stabio-Confine), Vedeggio and Chiasso-Strada customs offices, i.e. in Ticino. On the route from Germany, the documents should therefore be complete in the vehicle. If you have questions, the information centre can help on +41 58 467 15 15, Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 11.30 and from 13.30 to 17.00. Read more about the procedures in the guide to customs and formalities for Switzerland.
Baden AG: town-centre driving ban, closing a parking space and the Stadtbüro
According to the town of Baden, a general driving ban for motor vehicles applies throughout the town centre. For a move, the loading and unloading time is extended, but it must take place visibly and swiftly. In exceptional cases, an access permit is available at the desk of the municipal police (Brown-Boveri-Platz 3A) for 10 francs per day; residents and businesses in the town centre receive a free annual permit.
If a public parking space outside the building is to be kept free, the municipal police are responsible. The permit must be applied for electronically at least five working days before the desired closure. The fees are based on the municipal police's fee regulations; for paid parking spaces, the lost parking revenue is also charged. The municipal police answer queries on +41 56 200 76 00. Our Parking restriction zone service explains what matters when planning.
After moving in, you register at the Stadtbüro within 14 days, having deregistered in your previous municipality. You can do this via the eUmzug portal or in person. For EU and EFTA nationals, the town requires, among other things, a passport or ID, birth certificate, proof of health insurance, employment contract and tenancy agreement. The administration's desks are open on Fridays from 8 am to 2 pm; the town gives the other times on its opening hours page. Guidance on costs and neighbourhoods is offered by the Baden moving guide.
