New in The Hague: BRP Registration City Districts and Daily Life by the Sea

The Hague Guide
Arriving in The Hague, the Seat of Government by the Sea
The first few weeks
The Hague is the seat of parliament and government of the Netherlands and the capital of the province of South Holland; the country's capital, however, is Amsterdam. With the Binnenhof as its political centre and the districts of Scheveningen and Kijkduin right on the North Sea, it is the third-largest city in the country. The Hague is known as the seat of international organisations such as the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and Europol. We plan our home removal to The Hague from Berlin.
As many newcomers arrive from abroad – for example to work for the international organisations – the Gemeente (municipality) provides its own guidance for expats. Within the EU, your household goods need no customs declaration. We take care of packing, transport and, on request, assembly; we give you the fixed price after a survey, and for your belongings we accept liability under the HGB. That way, your life in The Hague begins without stress.

What
Newcomers to The Hague Should Know
A move to The Hague comes with typical tasks: finding a flat, booking a BRP appointment, waiting for your BSN and taking out health insurance. If you come as a recognised researcher or highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant), book the appointment via The Hague International Centre. No parking restriction is needed on moving day – parking spaces cannot be reserved, and the van parks free of charge as long as the move is under way. We take care of packing, transport and assembly. Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers to The Hague
Eight City Districts – Where Newcomers Live in The Hague
The Hague is divided into eight city districts: Centrum, Escamp, Haagse Hout, Laak, Leidschenveen-Ypenburg, Loosduinen, Scheveningen and Segbroek. The city centre with the Binnenhof is about 6 km from the North Sea; Scheveningen and Kijkduin lie right by the sea. With around 113,000 inhabitants, Escamp is the largest district. Close to the centre lies the Haagse Bos, a park around two kilometres long west of Huis ten Bosch.
We deliberately do not quote specific rents here. Start searching early via portals and estate agents and check that you will receive proof of address for BRP registration.
Working and Living in The Hague
The Hague is the seat of numerous international organisations: the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and Europol are based here, plus parliament, government, ministries and many embassies. Together with eight neighbouring municipalities, the city forms the Haaglanden regional association with around one million inhabitants.
Since 1831, The Hague has been a residence of the royal family. For leisure, there are the beach at Scheveningen, the Haagse Bos and museums such as the Museon or the public transport museum. Neighbouring cities such as Delft, Leiden and Rotterdam are close by; for students, it is worth looking at the universities in the region.
How Much Does a Move to The Hague Cost?
| 1 room | €344 |
| 2 rooms | €615 |
| 3 rooms | €905 |
| 4 rooms | €1,309 |
| House/villa | individual |
| Long-distance move | €3.85/km |
All prices are starting prices ("from"). For an exact quote, use our free survey.
What the price depends on
When moving, it is above all the volume and the distance (from €3.85/km) that determine the price. Floor and lift affect the staffing required, while a parking restriction zone takes care of the parking situation. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a shared load can be booked as options.

Registration in The Hague: BRP Registration and BSN
If you come from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland, have never been registered in the Netherlands and are staying in The Hague for at least four months, according to the Gemeente Den Haag you must register in the population register (BRP). The page does not state a fixed deadline. However, registration can apply retroactively to the date you booked the appointment, even if the appointment itself is later.
Book the appointment on 14070 (from abroad +31 70 353 30 00) or online via denhaag.mijnafspraakmaken.nl. It takes place at the Publiekszaken counter in the Segbroek district office, Fahrenheitstraat 190. All family members who are registering must attend in person, including babies and older people. If you already have a BSN and are staying longer than four months, use the separate page for re-registration.
- valid ID (not a driving licence)
- proof of your residential address
- for a birth, marriage or divorce abroad: certificates (not compulsory but recommended, possibly with legalisation or translation)
If you come as a recognised researcher or highly skilled migrant (IND), book the appointment via The Hague International Centre. Registration is free of charge and is usually processed within four weeks. The municipality then sends a confirmation with your citizen service number (BSN). As of: October 2026.
For planning the journey, see the long-distance moving guide for The Hague.
Daily Life in The Hague: Districts, Parking the Removal Van and Bulky Waste
According to the Gemeente, The Hague is divided into eight city districts: Centrum, Escamp, Haagse Hout, Laak, Leidschenveen-Ypenburg, Loosduinen, Scheveningen and Segbroek.
On moving day: according to the Gemeente, you cannot reserve parking spaces for the removal van in advance. Parking the van during the move is free of charge; the move must be clearly recognisable to parking enforcement, and you pay during breaks. The visitor parking card of the people moving is helpful, if they have one. A removal lift needs no permit, but you inform the road authority of your district.
Bulky waste that does not fit into a container or bin bag and that you cannot take away yourself can be collected free of charge. You book the appointment via the municipality's waste calendar and choose the collection day yourself. Put the waste out before 7.45 am or after 10.00 pm the evening before – not by containers, not on private property, not against the façade. Items may be no more than 1.5 metres long and no wider or higher than 0.5 metres. Changes are possible until 11.59 pm the day before, by phone on 14070 (Mon to Fri, 8.30 am to 5.00 pm). From 5 October to 13 November 2026, the municipality also collects pruned wood and branches free of charge, bundled with string. Further background is provided by the The Hague guide.
