Long-distance move to The Hague: 699 km, one border, no customs

Route, process, deadlines

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 699 km via the A2, A30 and the Dutch A12 to the coast.

A move to The Hague takes you from Berlin along the A2 to Bad Oeynhausen, on the A30 past Osnabrück to the border at Bad Bentheim and, in the Netherlands, via the A1, A28 and A12 to the seat of government on the North Sea. That is around 699 km by road – more than one day's driving time for a lorry, so with two drivers or an overnight stop. There is no customs: Germany and the Netherlands are both in the EU, and your household goods cross the border without papers.

We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and take care of packing, transport and assembly in your new home. In The Hague, no parking ban can be reserved in advance – so we plan the arrival time and carrying distances with a margin. After a survey we quote a fixed price. What else to bear in mind with cross-border moves is set out under International move.

FROM BERLIN

What we take care of when you move to The Hague

Transport from Berlin, formalities with you

We have no branch in the Netherlands; instead we drive our lorry from Berlin-Moabit. We take care of packing, carrying, transport and assembly; we check narrow stairwells in advance and plan a furniture hoist if needed. You handle registration with the Gemeente, BSN, health insurance and car yourself – we tell you which deadline runs from arrival day. For your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is possible.

Packing service

We pack crockery, books and electronics for the long journey and label the boxes by destination room in The Hague.

Two drivers or an overnight stop

Around 699 km is more than one day's driving time; we plan two drivers or an overnight stop so that the lorry arrives in The Hague well rested.

Furniture hoist instead of stairs

Steep, narrow stairs are common in Dutch houses; according to the city, a furniture hoist does not need a permit in The Hague.

Furniture transport

Single items such as a piano or display cabinet travel padded and secured across the border and into your new home in The Hague.
FIXED PRICE AFTER A SURVEY

What we do for you

The cost of a long-distance move to The Hague depends on volume, floor, access at the destination and the roughly 699 km. After the survey we quote a fixed price that includes a second driver or overnight stop and the lorry toll.

01

Fixed arrival day

Loading and arrival days are fixed in writing so that you can arrange the key handover in The Hague with certainty.
02

Papers in your hand luggage

Passport, tenancy agreement and proof of address for the Gemeente travel with you in your hand luggage, not in the lorry to The Hague.
03

Parking without a reservation

Because no parking ban can be reserved in The Hague, we clarify access and alternative spaces with you in advance and build in time buffers – more on this below.
04

Planned backwards

We plan backwards from move-in day: notice in Berlin, packing dates, journey with overnight stop and arrival in The Hague to match the start of your tenancy.
05

Storage to bridge a gap

If your flat in The Hague is not yet free, we put your belongings into interim storage in Berlin and deliver on the new date.
06

Ready to settle in

At the end, beds and wardrobes are up, the boxes are in the right rooms – and you have time for your appointment at the Gemeente in The Hague.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Part load – the clever solution

Save on small loads

With just a few pieces of furniture, a part load (Beiladung) to The Hague can be cheaper than a lorry of your own: your goods travel with other consignments heading for the Netherlands. You need a little flexibility on the delivery day – ideal if you are living in furnished accommodation at first or only a few items are following on.

What a move to the Netherlands involves

A move to The Hague involves more than transport: registration with the Gemeente and the citizen service number (BSN), Dutch health insurance and, if you have a car, registration with the RDW. Then there is the choice between a lorry of your own and a part load. This guide sorts out route, parking and deadlines; the general checklist for the Netherlands can be found in the article Emigrating to the Netherlands.

Planning safely and calmly

Plan the loading day so that you have time for the Gemeente in the first days after arrival – this applies to every private move, senior move or student move to The Hague, because registration is due within five days.

Furniture, boxes, carrying routes

With a packing service, careful furniture transport and a furniture hoist if needed, furniture gets up even steep stairs into houses in Scheveningen, the centre or Segbroek in The Hague.

Costs, timing and special cases

The roughly 699 km have the biggest influence on costs; on top come a second driver or overnight stop and the lorry toll in both countries. For small volumes a part load to The Hague lowers the price.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving to The Hague

Customs, route, parking, registration, health insurance and costs – answered in brief.
None. Germany and the Netherlands are EU members, so there is neither a customs declaration nor import duties for your household goods. An inventory list still helps with liability and unpacking. For a car, what matters is not customs but registration with the RDW and the possible exemption from BPM.

No customs, but deadlines: formalities in the Netherlands

As the Netherlands, like Germany, is a member of the European Union, there is no customs clearance and there are no import duties for your household goods. Your own inventory list is still useful – for liability and unpacking, not for customs. If you bring your car, you register it with the RDW; the BPM registration tax may not apply in the case of a move if you have owned and used the car for at least six months beforehand.

Anyone staying in the Netherlands for longer than four months registers with the Gemeente within five days of arrival and then receives the citizen service number (BSN). You need it for your employer, bank and health insurance; the basic insurance must be taken out within four months, counted from the start of the insurance obligation.

The Hague: seat of government with eight city districts

The Hague is the seat of the Dutch parliament and government and the capital of the province of South Holland; the country's capital is Amsterdam. The International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, among others, are based here, so many people move here for work. The municipality is divided into eight city districts, from Centrum and Scheveningen on the coast to Escamp, Loosduinen and Leidschenveen-Ypenburg.

For the move, the exact address is what counts: an older building with a steep staircase in the centre often needs a furniture hoist, a new build in Ypenburg usually does not. Tell us the street, floor and stairs early. Where else we go is shown in the overview of locations.

What makes up the price of your move?

Pricing is based primarily on volume and distance (from €3.85/km). Other influencing factors are the floor, whether there is a lift and a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) at the loading address in Berlin. If needed, furniture assembly or a part load complete the service.

More routes from Berlin

We plan long-distance moves from Berlin (Stromstraße 21), including to neighbouring countries. In the locations overview you will find places with their own pages, and routes from Berlin under Long-distance moves.

The Hague: parking on moving day without a reservation

Anyone who applies for a parking restriction in Germany expects the same for The Hague. However, on its page “Parkeren voor verhuizers” (parking for people moving house), the Gemeente Den Haag states that no parking space and no parking ban can be reserved in advance. The removal van may stand without a parking fee during the move; during breaks, such as a coffee break, the fee applies again in streets with paid parking.

So that parking enforcement can see that a move is under way, the city recommends keeping the removal order confirmation to hand. In some cases, the visitor parking permit of the person moving can also be used. The Gemeente answers questions on 14070. So plan your arrival with a bit of a margin, because a space kept free outside the door is not guaranteed.

According to the city, no permit is needed for a furniture hoist. You should, however, inform the road manager (wegbeheerder) of your city district, especially if the hoist will stand on the pavement for a longer time; the city lists email addresses for all eight city districts for this purpose. For vehicles such as a mobile crane, on the other hand, a “takelvergunning” (hoisting permit) is required.

At the loading point in Berlin, by contrast, the space can be secured in advance: more on this under Parking restriction zone. For the overall planning of a move abroad, see our page International move.

The Hague: registering from abroad and booking an appointment

Anyone moving to The Hague from abroad and staying there for at least four months is legally obliged, according to the Gemeente Den Haag, to register in the Personal Records Database (BRP). You have to book the appointment yourself: online via denhaag.mijnafspraakmaken.nl or by telephone on 14070, or from abroad on +31 70 353 30 00. If you arrive late, you may no longer be seen.

You must bring a valid ID (a driving licence is not accepted) and proof of address (“bewijs van bewoning”). All family members who are registering must appear in person, including babies and elderly relatives. The municipality checks birth, marriage or divorce certificates from abroad; in some cases legalisation or translation is required. Registration is free of charge and is usually processed within four weeks, after which you receive your citizen service number (BSN) by post.

According to the city, scientific researchers, highly skilled migrants (kennismigranten) and people with special status book their appointment via The Hague International Centre. If you book the appointment after arrival, the city says registration can be backdated to the booking date, provided you bring the confirmation. If you later move within the Netherlands, the rule is: report from four weeks before to five days after the move. Read more about districts and everyday life in our guide Living in The Hague.
