Moving to The Hague: seat of government by the sea
Tips and deadlines
The Hague is the seat of government of the Netherlands – the capital is Amsterdam – and home to international institutions such as the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. The city lies on the North Sea and has eight districts, from Scheveningen on the beach via the Statenkwartier with its period buildings to Escamp and Leidschenveen-Ypenburg. Because the Netherlands is in the EU, your household goods need no customs papers; what matters is registration and parking on moving day.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 699 km via the A2 and A30 to the border and on via the Dutch motorways A1, A28, A27 and A12 to The Hague. By lorry that is roughly eleven hours including breaks – more than one day's driving time, so we drive with two drivers or stop overnight on the way. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including for the return route to Berlin. More on this: Planning a move to the Netherlands.

What we take care of when you move to The Hague
From Berlin to the North Sea
We have no branch in the Netherlands; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an older building in the Statenkwartier, a flat in Scheveningen or a terraced house in Escamp. A parking space cannot be reserved in advance in The Hague; according to the Gemeente (municipality), the moving company may stop without a parking fee during the move if it is clear that a move is under way. For steep stairs we plan a furniture hoist, which according to the Gemeente does not need a permit. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

What we do for you

Moving
& transport from one provider
A move to The Hague brings a few issues of its own: registration with the Gemeente within five days, flat hunting in a tight market and a parking permit for your new neighbourhood. The choice of district – quiet Benoordenhout, close to the beach in Scheveningen or an older building in the Zeeheldenkwartier – also determines access and stairs on moving day. A parking space for the removal van cannot be reserved; how parking is regulated according to the Gemeente is explained further down. We plan the journey from Berlin with two drivers, the furniture hoist for steep stairs and assembly, so that you can move in on arrival day.

Frequently asked questions about moving to The Hague
Districts in The Hague: where is a move worthwhile?
The Hague is made up of diverse districts with very different characters. The Statenkwartier and Zeeheldenkwartier impress with stately period buildings and are popular with diplomats and international families. Scheveningen tempts with direct beach access and a maritime feel, while Benoordenhout is regarded as a green, quiet district close to international schools. If you prefer urban life, you will find short distances to government buildings, shops and Den Haag Centraal station in the Centrum.
For students and young professionals, Segbroek and the area around The Hague University of Applied Sciences (Haagse Hogeschool) are attractive, as rents here are still more moderate. Families with children often move to Escamp in the south, where more living space is available at lower prices. Which district suits your lifestyle and budget depends on your place of work, school and the size of home you need.
Housing market and quality of life in The Hague
The housing market in The Hague is tight: sought-after neighbourhoods such as the Statenkwartier are particularly expensive; current rents can be found on portals such as Pararius or Funda. The reason is the high demand from international organisations such as the International Court of Justice, Europol and the OPCW, which attract numerous expats and diplomats. As the Dutch seat of government with many ministries, the city also offers stable jobs and attracts skilled workers from all over Europe.
The quality of life in The Hague convinces with its combination of North Sea beach, extensive green spaces such as the Haagse Bos and excellent rail connections to Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Educational institutions such as Leiden University Campus The Hague and the International Institute of Social Studies make the city additionally attractive for students. Anyone looking for the sea, an international atmosphere and career opportunities will find The Hague an ideal new place to live.
What does a move cost? All prices in detail
Before you plan your move, you should know the approximate costs. Our guide prices: 1-room flat from €365, 2-room flat from €609, 3-room flat from €894 and 4-room flat from €1,279. Larger properties such as a house or villa are calculated individually. For a long-distance move we charge from €3.80/km. For an exact quote we recommend a free survey.
Moving price: the decisive levers
Larger flats mean more volume and therefore higher costs. The distance is charged from €3.80/km, with floor and lift as further variables. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load round off the offer.

Parking and furniture hoists in The Hague: the Gemeente's rules for removal vans
Special rules apply to removal vans in The Hague. According to the Gemeente Den Haag, moving companies carrying out a move in The Hague may park the removal van without a parking fee during the move. The space cannot be reserved in advance. If parking fees apply in the street, it must be clear to parking enforcement officers that a move is under way; during breaks, such as coffee breaks, you have to pay. The Gemeente recommends keeping an order confirmation (opdrachtbevestiging) to hand. It may also be possible to use the visitor parking permit of the person who is moving.
- Furniture hoist: according to the Gemeente, no permit is required. You should inform the district's wegbeheerder (road manager), especially if the hoist will stand on the pavement for a longer time.
- Crane: for special vehicles such as a hijskraan (mobile crane) you need a takelvergunning (hoisting permit).
The email addresses of the road managers of all eight districts are on the Gemeente's website; it answers questions on 14070. The page does not mention a fee for the removal van during the move, nor a fee or lead time for the furniture hoist and the takelvergunning.
As the parking space cannot be reserved, we plan the process so that loading times stay short and keep the order confirmation ready. During the free survey we clarify access, loading route and floor. Read more about the process in the long-distance moving guide for The Hague and under International move.
Statenkwartier and Zeeheldenkwartier: registering after your move to The Hague
For older buildings in the Statenkwartier and the Zeeheldenkwartier, we check stairwell, floor and lift during the survey. We then decide whether to carry the furniture or use a furniture hoist.
After moving in, you report your move to the Gemeente. For moves within the Netherlands, the Gemeente Den Haag gives these deadlines: you can report the move up to four weeks before the moving date and must do so within five days after the move. The quickest way is online with DigiD; according to the Gemeente, processing takes up to five working days. A copy of the tenancy or purchase agreement serves as proof of the new address. According to the Gemeente, anyone moving from abroad should ask by telephone on 14070, because this page only describes moves within the Netherlands.
On customs, read our article Moving to the Netherlands: customs, formalities and process. On zoll.de, the customs administration describes the exemption for household removal goods explicitly for moves from third countries into the EU; we clarify during planning which papers your move from Berlin needs.
