Moving to Lille: costs process & districts

From Berlin to northern France
Moving to Lille: Vieux-Lille, Wazemmes and Fives
Guide
Lille lies in the north of France near the Belgian border; it is the prefecture of the Nord department and the capital of the Hauts-de-France region, nicknamed the "capital of Flanders". Together with the incorporated localities of Lomme and Hellemmes and neighbouring towns such as Roubaix, Tourcoing and Villeneuve-d'Ascq, Lille forms the Métropole Européenne de Lille. For your home move we handle packing, transport and assembly – whether an older building in Vieux-Lille or a flat in Wazemmes. As France is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 848 km via the Ruhr area, Eindhoven, Antwerp and Ghent to Lille. By lorry that takes about 13 hours including breaks – more than one day's driving time, so with two drivers or an overnight stop. For the stopping place in front of the house, the Ville de Lille requires a permit, applied for at least ten working days in advance. We give you the fixed price after a survey. More on cross-border moves under International move.

What we handle on a move to Lille
Planning in Berlin, arrival in Flanders
We have no branch and no partners in France; instead we drive by lorry from Berlin-Moabit right to your door in Lille. That is why we clarify access, floor and stopping place in advance – in Vieux-Lille with its narrow cobbled lanes as well as in the residential neighbourhoods on the outskirts. You or we apply for the city's permit for the removal van at least ten working days in advance. We pack, carry, transport and assemble. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible.

Move affordably with a part load
If you only want to take a few pieces of furniture or boxes to Lille, it is best to ask about a part load: your belongings travel with other consignments on the route via Antwerp and Ghent to northern France, and you only pay your share of the load space. The delivery day depends on the trip; for fixed dates there is the dedicated journey.

Everything
for your move
A move to Lille raises different questions from a move in Germany: France has no general requirement to register with a residents' registration office; you notify several bodies of your new address at once via service-public.gouv.fr. The removal van needs a permit from the city with ten working days' lead time. This guide shows the quartiers, the route and the steps after moving in. We do not give rents because they change quickly.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Lille
The quartiers of Lille at a glance
Lille is divided into quartiers of very different character. Vieux-Lille, the old town, is characterised by Flemish brick façades and narrow cobbled lanes. South-west of the centre lie Wazemmes with its market and Vauban-Esquermes, with Bois-Blancs on the Deûle; to the east and south come Fives, Moulins and Lille-Sud. For some years Lomme and Hellemmes have also been part of the city. For the move, the areas differ mainly in access and stopping place: Vieux-Lille is tight, while the residential neighbourhoods on the outskirts often have more space. Which area suits you depends on your commute, school and budget; we plan the transport to suit the address. If the scope does not change, the price stays exactly as stated in the quote. If the new flat is not yet free, we store your belongings temporarily in Berlin and deliver on the agreed date.
Housing market, work and studying in Lille
We do not give specific rents because they depend heavily on location and condition; compare current offers on French portals. Lille has always been a trading city and is now the centre of a large conurbation; large retail companies have their headquarters in the surrounding area, and banks and service providers in the Euralille business district. With the Université de Lille and other higher education institutions, the city is a major place to study. Via the Lille-Flandres and Lille-Europe stations, Lille is connected to the high-speed rail network. Together with Kortrijk, Tournai and Mouscron, Lille forms the Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai Eurometropolis. If the new flat is not yet free, we store your furniture temporarily in Berlin. We answer frequently asked questions briefly and specifically further below. We plan the way back to Berlin in the same way. Additional services such as assembly, packing or storage are listed individually.
What does a move to Lille cost?
Moving costs vary greatly depending on flat size and distance. As a rough guide: 1-room flat from €354, 2-room flat from €594, 3-room flat from €894, 4-room flat from €1,309. Larger properties such as houses or villas receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves an additional €3.90/km is calculated. For exact figures we recommend a free survey.
Cost factors when moving
The most important criteria for calculating the price are the volume of your household goods and the distance, which is charged at €3.90/km. The floor and lift also play a role, as does a possible parking restriction zone. Furniture assembly and part load can be booked as options.

More routes from Berlin
We plan moves from Berlin (Stromstraße 21), including to France; we have no branches in other places. You can find out everything about long distances under Long-distance moves, and the locations overview shows places with their own pages.
Lille: permit for the removal van from the Ville de Lille
Anyone stopping with a removal van on public land in Lille usually needs a permit from the city. For moves by private individuals, the Ville de Lille refers to the form "Demande arrêté de circulation initiale". According to the city, the request must be submitted at least ten working days before the desired date. It is submitted by email to [email protected] or by post to the Direction Occupation et Aménagement d'Espace Public at the Hôtel de Ville (CS 30667, 59033 Lille Cedex). The city answers queries on 03.20.49.52.50. The page does not state costs or the documents to be enclosed; the note accompanying the form may specify these.
When a removal company is used, the city makes a distinction on its page on "occupation temporaire de l'espace public" (temporary occupation of public space): moves carried out by a company must accordingly be requested by the company.
- Fix the date at least ten working days in advance
- State the location of the vehicle with street and house number
- According to the city, apply for an extension at least two working days before expiry
For addresses in Vieux-Lille, Fives or Lille-Sud, we check access, parking and carrying distances during the survey and then plan the price. Read more about our moves abroad under international move and in the article Long-distance move to France.
Lille after the move: change of address and notifications in France
After moving into Lille, you notify several bodies of your new address in France. The service-public.gouv.fr portal offers an online change-of-address declaration, which lets you notify several organisations, such as the tax administration, health insurance (CPAM), family allowance fund (Caf) and energy suppliers, of your new address in one go. The page also lists other bodies that you notify separately:
- bank and insurers
- employer and, if applicable, France Travail
- electricity, gas, water, telephone and internet providers
- the vehicle: the registration certificate (carte grise) gets the new address
- the electoral roll via the Mairie (town hall)
- for owner-occupied property, the syndic (property manager)
According to the portal, the Mairie of your old municipality must be informed for the waste collection charge. The portal gives 9 July 2024 as the date of the page, so check service-public.gouv.fr before your move to see whether anything has changed. On the electoral roll, the portal writes that registration is possible all year round, but a deadline applies before each election.
Because a move from Germany to France affects contracts and dealings with the authorities on both sides, it pays to plan the order early: first the dates for loading and unloading, then electricity, internet and insurance, along with the online changes of address. On request we provide our packing service and coordinate the dates with you.
