Moving to Olomouc: districts, formalities and the route
Arriving well
A move to Olomouc takes you to the capital of the Olomouc Region (Olomoucký kraj), with one of the largest historic old towns in the Czech Republic. The Holy Trinity Column on Horní náměstí is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Univerzita Palackého is the country's second-oldest university. We are based in Berlin and drive around 582 km to Olomouc – we plan your long-distance move from the boxes to the last piece of furniture. We state the fixed price after the survey. Within the EU, no customs duty applies to household goods.
Our team takes care of packing, furniture assembly and dismantling as well as transporting your household goods. For the old town around Horní náměstí, access is crucial: the city provides forms for a reserved parking space and for exemptions in the pedestrian zone, though in Czech. Our liability is under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance is available. You can read what a household move includes under Home move, and long routes under Long-distance moves.

What a move to Olomouc involves
Route, language, parking space
A move to the Czech Republic is not a customs matter, but it raises other questions: Czech forms for the parking space, parking zones in the old town and registration with the foreign police. During the survey we clarify volume, floor and access and plan the route of around 582 km including driving times and tolls. We state the fixed price afterwards. Our liability is under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. The locations overview shows which destinations have their own page.

What
comes after moving in
Besides the transport, many people moving have practical questions: how do I register my stay in the Czech Republic, how does the deposit work with Czech tenancy agreements, and what additional costs are there? As an EU citizen, you register your place of residence with the foreign police within 30 days if you stay longer than 30 days and your accommodation provider does not do this. Districts such as Hejčín or Nové Sady are in demand. Whether a complete home move or a smaller part load – we clarify this together.

Frequently asked questions about living in and moving to Olomouc
Olomouc's districts at a glance
Olomouc is divided into numerous districts with very different characters. The historic centre around Horní náměstí with the Holy Trinity Column, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is ideal for anyone who loves the feel of older buildings, cafés and short distances. Nová Ulice is a residential area close to the centre with good infrastructure. Hejčín scores with quieter streets, while Slavonín in the south is characterised by new areas of detached houses.
Nové Sady is a large residential district in the south of the city. Prefab blocks shape districts such as Povel and Neředín, which are well connected to public transport. If you prefer it quieter, take a look at Svatý Kopeček with its pilgrimage site and view over the city. The right location depends on budget, commute and lifestyle.
Housing market, university and employers
The housing market in Olomouc is strongly shaped by students. Flats are usually described using the Czech scheme, such as 1+kk (one room with a kitchenette) or 2+kk. In addition to the basic rent, expect service charges and a deposit; demand is particularly high at the start of term, so it pays to search early. Specific rents vary widely by location and condition, so compare offers on site.
Important employers are Fakultní nemocnice Olomouc (University Hospital) and Univerzita Palackého, founded in 1573 and the second-oldest university in the Czech Republic. Industrial companies in the region include Siemens Elektromotory in Mohelnice and the cooker manufacturer MORA in Hlubočky; there are also logistics and IT firms. If you are moving here for work, you will find a mix of education, healthcare and industry.

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide and abroad, including to the Czech Republic. The locations overview shows destinations with their own page, and we describe routes and the process under Long-distance moves.
From Germany to Olomouc: registration, EU rules and customs
According to German Customs (Zoll), the Czech Republic is one of the 27 EU member states. However, the customs page on the exemption for removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) describes moves from a non-EU country into the EU; it does not list separate steps for moves within the EU. We explain how the process works for a move from Germany to the Czech Republic in the article Customs formalities when moving to the Czech Republic.
On registration, the EU portal Your Europe gives this guidance: after the first three months in another EU country, registration with the local authority may be required; the rules differ from country to country. You need a valid ID card or passport and, depending on your status, proof of, for example, employment, self-employment or – for students – enrolment, health insurance and sufficient resources. Anyone who fails to meet this obligation can be fined, but cannot be expelled. Separately, the following applies in the Czech Republic: anyone staying longer than 30 days reports their place of residence to the foreign police within 30 days of entry, unless the accommodation provider does this.
For up-to-date residence information, the Czech Ministry of the Interior refers to the official web portal for foreigners (frs.gov.cz). Check your situation there before you move, and clarify the formalities with the responsible office in Olomouc. You will find a checklist for getting started in the article Emigrating to the Czech Republic: moving checklist, and general information on the process in Long-distance move to the Czech Republic.
Parking and traffic arrangements in Olomouc on moving day
According to the municipal parking portal, parking in Olomouc is only chargeable on working days from 8 am to 6 pm. It gives 100 CZK per hour for zone A and 40 CZK per hour for zone B. You can pay via the EasyPark app, by premium SMS ("OL A" or "OL B" plus registration number to 90266) or at the parking meter. In the registration number, the letter O and the digit 0 must be distinguished, otherwise the payment will not be assigned. Residents' permits can be ordered online via the e-shop; the annual fees are listed in the portal's price table.
What matters more on moving day is that the lorry is allowed to stop. On its forms page, the City of Olomouc provides several applications, including:
- "Žádost o povolení vyhrazení parkování" (application for approval of a reserved parking space)
- "Návrh na stanovení místní-přechodné úpravy provozu" (proposal for a local or temporary traffic arrangement with traffic signs)
- "Žádost o výjimku z místní úpravy provozu … Pěší zóna" (exemption for the pedestrian zone)
The forms are available in Czech. The municipal office (Magistrát) is located at Horní náměstí 583, 779 11 Olomouc (phone +420 585 513 111, [email protected]). Because of the language, early help on site is advisable. The city publishes current road closures in its traffic news.
