From Berlin to Bruges
Moving to Bruges: canals, Belfry and Binnenstad
Guide
Bruges is the capital of the province of West Flanders and, with around 120,000 residents, its largest city. The medieval centre with its canals, the Grote Markt and the 83 m high Belfry has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, and in 2002 Bruges was European Capital of Culture. The municipality also includes the seaport of Zeebrugge on the coast, and the College of Europe has been based here since 1949. If you are planning a move to Bruges, you register your new address with the city within eight working days; for the low-traffic (autoluwe) Binnenstad there is a transit document for moves. From Berlin-Moabit it is around 816 km via Venlo and Antwerp.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 816 km via Venlo and Antwerp to Bruges; that takes about 12.5 hours including breaks – so we use two drivers or an overnight stop. As both countries are in the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Bruges or from Bruges back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. The route and paperwork are covered in the Bruges long-distance moving guide.

What we take on when you move to Bruges
Planned in Berlin, arriving in West Flanders
We have no branch in Bruges; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an older building in the Binnenstad, a flat in Sint-Andries or a house in Assebroek. We apply in good time for the permit to stop outside the new address, following the City of Bruges' rules. We give you the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with your address registration.

Moving
service without compromise
A move to Bruges raises many questions: which district suits you, how does the lorry get into the low-traffic Binnenstad, when must you register your address and how do you get a parking permit? This guide introduces the Binnenstad and districts such as Sint-Andries, Sint-Kruis, Assebroek and Zeebrugge, explains address registration, the transit document and waste, and describes the roughly 816 km drive from Berlin via Venlo and Antwerp. Costs, shared loads and the new access rules from 2027 are covered too. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Bruges
The districts of Bruges at a glance
Bruges is divided into the historic Binnenstad (inner city) inside the ring of water and several districts: Sint-Pieters, Sint-Jozef, Koolkerke, Sint-Andries, Sint-Michiels, Assebroek, Sint-Kruis, Dudzele as well as Lissewege and Zeebrugge on the coast. The old town has cobblestones, canals and the market square with the Belfry – and, for a move, narrow lanes and access rules.
Sint-Michiels and Sint-Andries lie to the south and west near the station, while Sint-Kruis and Assebroek in the east are quieter. Zeebrugge with its seaport is about 14 km north on the North Sea. Which location suits you depends on your commute, budget and type of home. You can find more places via our locations.
Housing market and rents in Bruges
The housing market in Bruges is in demand because the city, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts many newcomers, students and second-home owners. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition; living in the Binnenstad and along the canals is usually more expensive than in the outer districts.
If you are moving to Bruges, start looking for a flat early, as popular locations are taken quickly. Our private moving team times the moving date to your tenancy agreement and address registration, whether you are coming from Berlin or by long-distance move from another region.
Moving costs at a glance
Whether a small flat or a large house – we have the right price for every move. For a house or villa we prepare an individual quote; a 4-room flat costs from €1,269, a 3-room flat from €894, a 2-room flat from €594 and a 1-room flat just from €339. For long-distance moves we charge from €4.25/km. Arrange your free survey today.
How the price of your move is calculated
First we look at the volume of your belongings and the distance, which is charged from €4.25/km. The floor and lift also determine how many staff are needed. If required, we also set up a parking restriction zone. For furniture assembly and shared loads you receive an individual quote.

Change of address and parking permit when moving to Bruges
If you move to Bruges, you register your new address with the city. According to Stad Brugge, this must be done within 8 working days of the actual move. One adult member of the household is enough, but everyone moving in should be registered. You can do this online via the e-loket or in person, for example at the Huis van de Bruggeling (Frank Van Ackerpromenade 2) or at the district offices in Sint-Andries, Sint-Kruis, Assebroek, Zeebrugge and Koolkerke. Bring your eID with PIN.
A neighbourhood police officer (wijkagent) then checks that you really live at the address. According to the city, the visit usually takes place within a month of registering. You then receive an invitation to update your eID.
The city regulates parking by zones. According to Stad Brugge, in the city centre and in blue zones you can apply for a temporary parking permit at the Parkeerwinkel immediately after registering; it is valid for up to three months. The permanent permit follows once the wijkagent has visited and your eID has been updated. You only receive a parking permit for the zone in which you are registered.
How the drive from Berlin works is explained in the Bruges long-distance moving guide. Everyday life and housing are covered in Living in Bruges.
Low-traffic Binnenstad, moving permit and waste in Bruges
Part of the centre of Bruges is "autoluw", meaning low-traffic. According to Stad Brugge, the Steenstraat is car-free every day, even for permit holders. In Katelijnestraat (from Ankerplein towards the centre) number-plate recognition is used every day, and only permit holders may drive through. The same applies to Geldmuntstraat and Zuidzandstraat, but only on Saturdays and Sundays. According to the city, the control hours are 13.00 to 18.00 in each case.
The city makes an exception for moves: anyone officially moving out of or into the low-traffic area can apply for a transit document for the move. The application must be made by 11.00 on the day after the move at the latest (for weekend moves, by Monday). The notice of move is sufficient proof or, if you use a removal company, proof of the order. According to the city, the traffic and parking rules change from 16 February 2027; check the current situation shortly before your date.
For household waste, the city only collects regulation waste bags. You receive the waste calendar when you change your address, and it is also in the RecycleApp. Take bulky items to the recycling parks (recyclageparken) in Sint-Michiels, Sint-Pieters or Zeebrugge (IVBO). We discuss which rules apply to your street during the survey; you will find further notes under international move.
